The RMS Lusitania DID NOT hit the ocean bottom while it was sinking. The ship sank relatively quickly, within 18 minutes after being torpedoed by the German submarine U-20 on May 7, 1915. During this rapid descent, the Lusitania remained intact and did not break apart, which indicates it did not strike the ocean floor in the shallow waters near the Irish coast where it was torpedoed. The Lusitania eventually came to rest on the seabed at a depth of about 305 feet (93 meters). It is in this position that the wreck remains to this day, having settled upright on the ocean floor. The depth of the water in the area where the Lusitania sank was sufficient to allow the ship to descend without striking the bottom during the actual sinking process.

So basically, the air in the stern was forced out, causing it to slip down under before the ship hit the sea bed. Is that where you're getting at?

@Klyis7 ай бұрын
What are your sources for this information? It contradicts survivor testimonies who say they felt the hull shudder as the bow hit the seafloor. Nor is the wreck sitting upright. It came to rest on the starboard side as is particularly evident in photos of the bow. Additionally the decks are sliding off the wreck as the hull unravels over time which would not be possible if she were upright.

Oh this is interesting. I was always under the impression that the bow hit the sea floor before the stern went under. Maybe I'm confusing Lusitania with Britannic.

@ryanindypa7 ай бұрын
There’s debate whether she hit the seabed while her stern was still top side or if she glided, if you will, like in the video (which seems more plausible), especially since her bow is surprising not completely mangled. Either way the impact with the seabed snapped her keel almost cleanly in two. Also it’s unclear if any of her funnels dismounted during the sinking or if it was when she hit bottom.

Nope thats just Brittanic. Unlike the Olympic class, the Lusitania and her sister had longitudinal bulkheads on top of the normal bulkheads. These split the starboard and port side down the middle, for the length of the ship. This allowed the starboard side to flooded faster and cleaner. The port side stayed more bouyant throughout the whole sinking. Allowing Lusi to more glide beneath than drop like we usually think of final plunges (thanks 97Titanic). The bouyant force in the port side fought against the flooded SB side and created something very similar to what CC gave us in this video.

Yes, but not in any sufficient capacity. Almost immediately after the torpedo strike there was a second explosion, at first theorized to be the munitions she carried or a second torpedo, then the theory of coal dust igniting. But according to Captain Turner’s testimony, steam pressure to the engines had dropped from about 190 psi to 50 psi, which has lead me to consider the theory that it was steam pipes rupturing. Anyway, Lusitania coasted 2 miles before she sank, but that was because even with pressure lost she was still 33k tons of steel being driven forward from the momentum alone. There is even speculation that this is what caused her to sink so quickly; the momentum was literally driving her under the water.

No, the RMS Lusitania did not strike the bottom while sinking. The Lusitania sank relatively quickly after being torpedoed by a German U-boat on May 7, 1915, but it did not strike the bottom during the process of sinking. The ship was torpedoed off the southern coast of Ireland and sank in about 18 minutes. The wreck eventually settled on the seabed at a depth of approximately 300 feet (91 meters). The rapid sinking and the depth of the water in the area meant that the ship did not strike the bottom until it had fully sunk.

@Bruno-G7 ай бұрын
No, the wreck looks awful because It had been used as target practice for depth charges until late 1920s. Some people say It was because the british government couldn't take the risks of the ship's cargo being stolen, some say they did this to prevent enemy submarines to "hide" on the wreck as a sonar shield. There are many stories about why exactly they destroyed the wreck but it's still a mystery.
