THIS is the definitive version of the song! The improvement is massive, it shows how important the production of a song can be. So many songs have an epic version and a "meh" version (im looking at you, "Devil Dance" by Invincible Spirit, and "Lacrima Christi" by Christian Death 👀😝!)

*Both versions are wonderful* 💜 12" was better known as it was more accessible & got played in Clubs; '82 version was very rare, very expensive 7" - I'm grateful for both, & all the bands that saved us from '80s mainstream; a cursed era except for Alternative music 💜 & blessed common sense allowing 15yr olds to gigs/clubs. & my collagen levels. When they have '80s' nights now & play plinky chart guff that makes you wish to break stuff, THAT'S what we were surrounded by, & Thatcher, threat of Nuclear War, hassle finding records, cassette tapes you had to re-spool with a pencil, & NO www!! The horror..

The version I know, & presumably everyone else who bought &/or danced to the 12"; earlier 7" was far rarer: far more expensive than the re-release (I saw the 7" for £25 on record shop wall, very desirable, but more than a week's dole) & the 12" was also the 1 played in the Clubs. 'Better' is subjective, just different studio production, tho' I like that 12" 'ends' not fades out! But I'm thankful for both & the bands that saved us from mainstream '80s, only good thing of that cursed era was the 'Alternative' music, & my collagen levels; all else was shite & we didn't even have the www to escape to; the *horror..*

Very cool! I like both versions of Body Electric - the first version from the Single is "straighter" and "clearer" somehow; this later one from the Body & Soul EP sounds somehow deeper and darker. I remember, that once, in the late 90's, I read an interview with Eldritch, in which he said, that Body Electric is one of his all time-favs. Anyway, a great track! ... I also remember that this one always fills the dancefloors many years ago ...

Other version has that driving techno style bassline and yeah, a sparser sound. Also in a different key I think, unless people have recorded them off vinyl with the pitch shifted or something.

Yes, you maybe right with that pitch shifting thing concerning the original vinyl recordings. I luckily own the original 7' of Body Electric in mint-condition with that great red-coloured cover! ... had costed me a small premium some years ago on ebay ... It is somehow a cooler thing to listen to this from vinyl, than from the Some Girls Wander By Mistake compilation.

asisterofmercy I'd like to hear some of their stuff remastered, but only if it's done properly. Most remasters seem to just compress the hell out of it and kill the track. Get the guy who remastered Pretty Hate Machine on the case :)

Having said that - 'there's no better only different' - I've just remembered original 𝘛𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 *is* better than the '92 re-release 😆 Ofra Haza's a fantastic talented singer, RIP:RIG, & it's a fine enough track, maybe brought a new audience, but I hated that someone deemed it needed extra vocals over it, & then everyone thought it was the 1 & only version..

I always thought this version was lighter, "tinnier", and too busy. The original's got that muddy thump, and the low budget / less tracks, especially that bass line combined with the wailing at the end gives the song a more frantic feel which in line with the lyrics.
