it's gone badly wrong right from the off hasnt it mark, WTF is that on your back, its deeply offensive, you may as well wrap yourself in the butchers apron. When the Oik is better dress than you, clearly youve taken a bad turn somewhere. This Yr the narative you need to spin is that its scotlands yr. you need to heavily emotionally invest in their chances, so much so that you will be wanting to sell your children into modern slavery if the Scotts loose. Then around Wk 3 you need to fully reverse your position, minus your kids, as the scotts disapoint yet again. It would be great to have you back in the best rugby championship on the planet, but the shirt, it has to go. 🤣

Regarding your discussion how and why the 6 Nations is important for NH fans, I think it's only because it's the legacy of the oldest international rugby tournament the "Home Nations" first disputed with 4 teams (England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales) in 1884. Then France joins them in 1910 and Italy in 2005. It's way older than the RWC (1987) hence it has a special love from NH fans

*Up the Scots…THIS IS OUR YEAR!* Glad to see you back guys! Being ambitious with the goal of talking about rugby...Tony's never managed it before! Personally, I love your bollocks guys. Is hot shot, high flyer Mark going to do a video rating former players and how it is to interview them? Tony, we need you to make this happen! Got to assume this year is another Ireland or France one, but I think the whole thing is more open this year. General consensus seems to be we're not looking at a grand slam, so hopefully the competition is more up for grabs. I will stand up for Toonie here. First, the 6N has become a much tougher competition as we have got good. But I think Gregor is responsible for our getting good. It definitely started before his tenure, but we are talking about Scotland as contenders (albeit very outside contenders) because of him. I would like him to be given a chance at the next world cup, when we should be given a fairer run of things. But he will certainly be remembered as the guy that turned it around for Scotland. In spite of my optimistic headline, I am going to say Scotland need to set a realistic goal of 2nd place. That is achievable, we are more than capable of it, and it is an improvement. I'd be content with that, although obviously 1st would be better. To use a very Scottish metric of performance…in 2017, England won the Calcutta cup for the 9th year on the bounce (including 1 draw, which will term a win as the previous winner retains the cup). Townsend took over after that season. Since then, Scotland have “won” 5/6 (again including a draw). It is a flawed argument, of course, but our 6N performance has gone from wooden spoon contender to “they’re underperforming 3rd place”. Which is a hell of a turnaround; no one in 2016/17 would have believed you if you told them we would retain the cup in that way! Be interesting to see your DVDM stats, Mark. My impression is that he is kept quiet in big games where Scotland are kept quiet, but it might be that he is a obvious part of the team, and him being kept quiet is an indicator of our overall performance?

Wouldn't mind seeing that video on the NRL. You're right that people outside Australia don't tend to understand what it's like here. It also feeds into what's happened to the Rebels. Melbourne is AFAIK *the* most congested sporting city in the world. There are 9 (I think) AFL teams, 3 A-League (soccer) teams, the Melbourne Storm (NRL) and the Rebels. That's around 14 men's professional kicking/passing ball sport teams squeezed into a city with a population of 5 million. 16 if you count the 2 BBL teams in the cricket and around 30 or so adding in all the women's teams.

How I’ve missed this podcast. As a massive Wallabies fan, Rugby Australia somehow keep shooting themselves in the foot with how they manage the sport within the country. The NRL has really done well in how they've grown the sport within Australia and their ability to draw young rugby talent through their pathways, which union has failed to do. As a note, the whole League vs AFL debate is very state-dependent. NSW and Queensland are the big League/Union states, whilst the rest are mostly AFL states. Also, the discussion about which is bigger comes down to which numbers you look at in terms of viewership and attendance.

If it’s a choice between wearing England gear or looking like a Tom Selleck lookalike, Magnum PI wins every time. 👨🏻 At least Magnum looked sexy in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. While England rugby can be described as efficient and tough, it has never been sexy. That’s a French (and latterly an Irish) rugby thing. For what it’s worth, my Mexican wife really enjoyed the Netflix Six Nations documentary. Her two principal take-aways were that it is sad that Johnny Sexton has retired as he was one of the few players she recognises, and that Sebastian Negri took way too long to propose to his girlfriend! And this scale of TV programmes, is it just ‘80s (A-Team, Knight Rider, McGuiver, Dukes of Hazard etc.) or can early ‘90s (aka Baywatch and Beverly Hills 90210) be included too? How about late ‘70s (Battlestar Galactica, Starsky and Hutch etc.)?

So tired of this narrative around Russell. He has never had the pack of a Pollard or a Farrell or even a Sexton. Yet given more limited resources still produces. The 1 in 5? Is silly business. He is a well-rounded and if he was only getting it right 1 in 5? He wouldn't be anywhere near test match rugby. As to his well-rounded play, one prime example: the Boks game in the WC. He got lamabasted for Scotland's performance, yet he actually played really well just not in the way he was expected to. He made 10 tackles missed none and 2 of those tackles were try savers. He also created a 3 on 1 overlap in 1st half Darcy Graham completely blew. He had one mediocre outing in the WC v Ireland.
