Port is left side of the ship, starboard is right. Boring, perhaps, but prepare for a brief history lesson. In the days before rudders and tillers an oar was put over the right hand side of the stern to allow the ship to steer. This also meant it was more effective to bring a ship up to a jetty on the left hand side. As a result, starboard is where they had the steering oar (bastardisation of the norse "styrisbord") while the port was the side on which they had the gangway to the port .

Our 10 used to scrape in as a utility/15, 12 used to be 15 or 3rd choice 10, 13 used to be wing, 14 arguably could be a best 15 in world like ben smith/izzy and 15 BB used to be best 10. Our downfall since 2019 has been this set up and is why we are complacent/dont usually finish in sync and its showing in the losses. TJ did not politicise anything - he said things that are supposed to be true in NZ law - and message of unity of A sovereign democracy and abiding by the legal document of the treaty and years of work which has already been done. Its only the very privileged who can pretend these things dont exist and dont need leaders in all forums to stand up and protect. The way to relate to internationals - the same corporate think tanks(atlas) who are trying to strip your rights as an individual have people in our government too, trying to undermine laws which protect our land and sovereignty from them.

It would be political - or a weird form of taking advantage of a culture - to sell the haka as part of a brand that is All Blacks, and not actually recognise Maori people are now being targeted in a way which undermines rights and laws for everyone in NZ. I think Irish feelings towards English people are really not much different to Kiwis, or Scots or Welsh come to that i.e. its kind of culturally ingrained that we hate them, which history classes back up with actual reasons to do so as you grow up, but outside matches against England, no-one really gives a fuck. When it comes to any sport where England are playing, basically every other country on Earth has a general "anyone but England" stance, since English colonialism screwed over almost the entire planet at one point or another, but I very rarely see anyone who genuinely hates England in reality. Also, do a "Plucky Underdogs" category i.e. the team you want to do well, even though you know they probably won't. Is it Fiji? Wales? Italy? Portugal? Georgia? Japan? Not necessarily a shit team, but one who never quite seems to get the wins you feel they deserve. Lots of good contenders this year. Or "Best Out of Position Player". I know Ireland have had things like Gus McCarthy playing back row, Murray on the wing, Van der Flier doing line out throws etc, and I assume there's other oddball instances of it that I don't see as it's outside my sphere of media/nation, but it could be a fun category in my opinion.

MAAAARK!! That Gonzales yellow card was the exact reason the deliberate knockdown law was created for. He intentionally slapped that ball for the express reason to prevent the opposition player to gather thr ball and score a try. There should not be any discussion on that one.
@TwoCentsRugby5 күн бұрын
Yeah I saw a lot of outcry over that one - and I don't reckon he should be slapping it aye. Even if they argue the direction of the hand - it's not a good look
@JimmyKip5 күн бұрын
The deliberate knockdown law has nothing to do with what actually happened as there was no knock on, (setting aside what the refereeing team said and communicated). The knock-on rules 11.2 & 11.3 are pretty clear that the ball has to move forward, and in this case the ball very clearly went backwards as the direction is relative to the players dead-ball line. The foul was a potential breach of 9.7b which is about intentionally putting the ball out of play with the hand or arm. The direction the ball goes doesn't matter, it could go straight up & out of the stadium if the action was intentional it can be ruled to be a foul. So in the end the only question is whether Gonzalez was intentionally putting the ball out or not; given it bounced a couple of times, his body made some movement that he was trying to regather I think there's a possible debate there, but as Mark & Tony say, you're putting the decision in the referee's hands going at it with one hand.
@YOYOTh1s5 күн бұрын
@@JimmyKip if I can match your level of technicality... Yes, the ball did go forward. You can clearly see Gonzales' slap affect the motion of the ball in the opposite direction of its momentum causing the ball to go over Bielle-Bierrey's head. This is simple physics. The slap didn't have enough energy to break its momentum towards the try line but did change its momentum enough to go flat. That's why I stand by Luke Pierce's explanation. His hand was pointing to the field of play, it affected the ball in that direction. We can't cry physics when the ball drifts forward in a pass and then ignore it in the case of a knock-on especially when it's as deliberate as this. But as I say... This type of incident is exactly why the deliberate knockdown law exists. The law is intended to prevent players from just knocking the ball down to prevent a line break or a try. No matter which way you look at it. Gonzales' deliberate cynical action prevented Bielle-Bierrey from scoring a try and the sanction he received is correct, and Luke Pierce's on-the-spot explanation is also technically correct.
@JimmyKip5 күн бұрын
@@YOYOTh1s I continue to disagree with the knock down, you are allowed to do it so long as it is not a knock on, this is exactly what Etzebeth did which similarly stopped a try but the ball didn’t go forwards and didn’t go out.. I believe it’s not a knock on as the ball doesn’t touch anything after Gonzalez hand until it hits the ground behind where he touched it. As best I can guess all the talk about the direction of the hand is irrelevant to a knock on or down, but part of determining intent for whether he meant it to go out.
@YOYOTh1s5 күн бұрын
@@JimmyKip The direction of the hand is relevant because he affected the motion of the ball in the direction of his try line, which by definition makes it a knock-on, and because there was no clear attempt to catch the ball it is a deliberate knock-on. Yes, you can slap the ball towards your own try line in the field of play, but that is clearly not what Gonzales did. The Etzebeth incident is not an equivalent example because his hand at worst was perpendicular to his try line and at best scooping the ball towards his try line. Further than that, I will have to agree to disagree on this. if you need more help understanding the physics at play, there was a wonderful Mythbusters episode where they shot a bowling ball from the back of a pickup out of a canon in the opposite direction the pickup was travelling. They explain the physics at play really well, and it applies to this situation. I will say again, we can not cry physics when the ball drifts forward with momentum in a pass and then ignore physics in a knock-on.
