The Six Planet Genesis Orrery

I have been quiet recently, spending much of lockdown in the workshop designing and implementing new ideas. Saturn's axial tilt, Jupiter's Great Red Spot and base dials that measure a century to name but a few.

Yet another masterpiece. I like that the Great Red Spot is actually spinning. This means that your Jupiter is actually hollow and contains a mechanism. I’d really like to see it. Does it have a good precision or is it spinning at the most convenient speed to design? You’re now trying to put some gearing below the wooden base. Personally I prefer when everything is above the base. Question: do you apply a protective coating to your brass parts? Mine end up getting dirty quite fast. Clickspring uses a polish paste enriched with wax but your pants aren’t that polished.

Thank you very much for your kind comments. Jupiter is indeed hollow, it comes apart in two sections. The bottom section houses a angled tube that a pinion gear and shaft fit inside of. Fixed the the centre is a crown gear from which the pinion takes its drive. Lastly the Great Red Spot here is actually a magnet connected to the pinion gear shaft. The wind speeds of the spot vary greatly and reach up to 400+ mph. So it would not have been feasible to recreate those types of ratios. When it comes to keeping brass shinny there is no miracle cure. The brass polishing pastes make the surface nice and shiny but leave a residue that will come back to haunt you a couple of months if not weeks down the line. Lacquer peels and and creates uneven discolouring and has the added nuisance of being a pain to remove. The very best you can do is keep the colouring even and as bright for as long as possible. So far, I have found that the best method is to polish the part using grit from 180 up to the thousands whilst applying generous amounts of either 3 in 1 oil or Rocal PTFE spray. The residue left behind will not only protect the brass from the air but also finger prints. Other benefits are that it can be easily reapplied and can only be beneficial to the moving parts!
