I love to skate, but that doesn't mean I get to skate all the time. Between work and family I don't get as much time to skate as I used to. It has been a serious limiting factor in progressing as a skater. But does skill progression truly matter at the end of the day? Or is it enough to just be rolling? The skaters struggle is very real!

I'm in the same boat. I'm 39 and been back to blading for the past 2 years. Life, family, and injury, keep me from skating as much as I'd like. It helps to be part of this community online, and hear from people like yourself to relate and know we're not alone in our struggles. I go through long periods where I skate almost everyday and then I can't skate for like 2 weeks or a month, and all I do watch other people skating and it's hard. My other problem is I skate solo, because I don't have any skate friends, so I think that would help push me and motivate me to push a little harder and learn new tricks faster. Btw, I'll watch your videos and others regardless of the tricks they're doing because I just enjoy seeing people enjoying the sport. Keep rollin'!

How you dealing with skate related injuries? I’m 34 and just got back into it after 20 years off. I can’t jump the same, my right knee has been in pain for the past week from what I can only guess is not used to jumping off things on skates anymore lol. It’s ruff man

Your videos help me getting back into skating. I'm 39 and used to play a lot of street hockey with my buddies in the past. A month ago I bought a pair of Roces Chicago for 10€, put them on and had a blast. So I'm gonna change a few bearings and see where these ancient but in good condition roller blades are going to get me. Keep up the fun videos, I like them a lot. Greetings from The Netherlands!

I get the same feelings sometimes, but I'm only 33 so I still try to push myself when I get the chance. Lack of skateparks is my issue, but like you say at least we're out here rolling and enjoying the freedom it brings. Some people are so physically incapable at such an early age nowadays from sedentary jobs and lack of exercise that we're definitely some of the lucky ones! Keep doing your thing 🙌

Your openness and vulnerability on this topic is super inspiring to me. I struggle with this same issue due to my own family and work circumstances, and I completely agree with the thought that a big purpose of all of this is simply the inherent fun of what we are doing. While I also agree it is exciting to be dialing in new tricks, it is just super hard for people like us to do that consistently in this chapter of our lives. On a side note, love seeing your material regardless of what tricks you are doing. Your flow and joy in blading alone is worth the view :) Thanks for this edit, Brenden!

I'm 57, back to skating 3 years ago, and with the falls that go with it. (a few bad ones, but nothing that ever kept me down) However, to this point, I consider myself lucky that I haven't fallen as much as I probably would have, given the miles I have done, and I think it has a lot to do with instinct that come with age. I have taken some chances, but I draw a line quite often out there, making very quick (and avoiding potentially life saving-definitely serious injury) decisions, sometimes within a few milliseconds. I love seeing guys like you pushing the boundries as we get older. It motivates me, but only to a point LOL. My brain is wired to at least TRY to be careful at my age, and I do. Anybody who takes up the sport we do, which pretty much REQUIRES falling to get better, especially as we get older, is far from a wuss in my book. Keep it rollin', and like you said, just have fun!

Oh man, that hit home so hard. I'm nearly 40 and basically only just started learning aggressive. I can do a few basic grinds on my p-rail and ride transitions, a couple of stalls but when i get to the park i feel like a complete noob. I just want to get to the stage where i can make the most of local parks but 90% of obstacles are out of my league. Sometimes i feel like i'm progressing slowly but then work family and shitty weather or just generally not feeling mean sometimes i can go a couple of weeks without skating, and when i do get to skate, it's only like 15-30mins. It makes me wonder if i'll ever get to where i want to be. I'm definitely a lot more confident and comfortable at the park than i was a year ago, and it's so much fun, so i just need to be happy with that and not worry so much.

Sometimes I learn new skating skills faster than I expected, and it's so awesome, and other times I'm practicing the same thing over and over again and it just seems to get worse the more I try. Mostly because of getting tired, of course. I do often need a week between intensive sessions, to recover, as I need to build up strength in my muscles, tendons, etc. I'm well in my forties now, though I think it's mostly a matter of careful training. I'm not using age as an excuse yet. I've always had challenges with a soar knee or hip when trying to do running, too. It's much less and faster to recover with skating now, than when I tried running as a much younger person. Skating is quite a complex activity, I think. So well done for being so good at it and being able to cruise that pump track so comfortably, simply as a warm up. I'm working up to that, as there is a pump track near my home. Still a lot more to learn first, though.

I don't think you're a wuss. As long as you're out there having a blast, that's what counts. I feel you, fren. In my teens, in the summer, I would go out and skate all day. Having the summer holidays, no other commitments, no other workouts and the teenage recovery times was great. These days, 30+... if I skate once a week, that's great. If I have the energy and time to do more, that's an exceptionally good week, means everything is going well in life, all stars are in alignment and I haven't picked up any injuries recently. There can be periods like that, when I skate every other day for 2 months, or go entire seasons when I skate once a month because life gets in the way or a silly injury grounds me for a month mid-season, throwing everything off. The same injury the teen me would have forgotten about 3 days later.

You're not a wuss at all. We are in our 30s and have much more at risk than younger teens and adults if we get hurt from tricks. I work outdoors.....so if I get hurt, I can't work. I could go on light-duty for a limited time, but that is no fun. I need to be able to work to support my family and pay my bills. Aggressive skating looks fun, but I got into skating late in the game and never learned it, nor will I ever try. There is plenty to learn from fitness, speed, urban, and wizard skating to keep me occupied and happy until the day I put away my skates for the last time.

Totally feel that struggle of only getting to blade once a week or so. Work definitely gets in the way because I work till like 8 every night. I still surprise myself with something new here and there. Sometimes I can return to my normal rhythm starting off with the last trick i taught myself (after warming up). Or just going for something I know I can fall out of safely and gain some quick confidence when I get it (if i do). And even if that all doesn't work... still a good day cuz I got to put the blades on 😅. Occasionally I feel like I pick up right where i left off. Not all the time tho

I notice cause I've been working on my weak side lately. Basically trying to get left turn as sharp as my right turn and Assuming I put my right foot forward when Im carving a sharp right turn, trying to improve this for the left. Finally, the Questionis : do you feel this is a waste of time ? Because I aint as good of a blader as you, but I've been crushing my rides for a long time withouth giving a damn, just diceded to work on it last week.

My experience, if you dedicate a lot of time, you do not improve proportionally, there is a moment when you stagnate. At 47 I didn't know how to skate on my back, I didn't know how to skate: on my back, to powerslide, to powerstop, to double push, I didn't know drop into bowl. Now, at 53, I have learned the above by dedicating one hour almost every day for 5 years and this last year three hours a day six days a week. Now I have time but I can't even learn to grind and jump like you do, instead of learning you improve being less afraid and improve your feeling. You stop improving exponentially or linearly like the first three years.
