@@doggyinthewindow It's a rating on how dangerous the climb is if you were to fall. R being serious injury, X being something like possible death. There is also a PG13 rating that is lesser but still something you wouldn't want to fall from the top of. R and X are basically saying DO NOT FALL from the top or over an area with a bad landing.

An R rating means if you fall serious injury is possible or likely. An X rating is even more serious and means death is possible or likely. R/X is somewhere in between these two ratings. X is the most dangerous, then R, then PG-13. Although you could be hurt on any climb. The danger part of the grade doesn't correspond entirely to the difficulty of a rock climb, but it is related. A v3 move up high is much more dangerous than a v10 move down low.@@doggyinthewindow
