I like how Bill thinks! This is a very smooth, slick build. I remember watching these race in the Australian Touring Car Championships back in the 80's under the JPS Racing banner and they were monsters in the Group C era. Really nice to see one in such immaculate condition - well done!

As a teenager growing up in the 80's I too fell love with the Mighty Bayerischen Meister Wagen back then first with the JPS 635 of Jim Richards then the ultimate 1980's BMW came out to take on the world... the E30 M3 and I was amazed at the performance of a na 4 banger going up against the V8 Holden the Ford Sierra and the Nissan Skylines. They might not have won all race's but they still held their own... I ended buying 7 years ago a '93 E34 M5 Touring while I was living in Germany and found that the engineering and build quality and how well it drove was phenomenally brilliant even for car that was 18 years old at the time and had over 400,000 klm on the clock. It was THE best stock standard car I have ever bought. And when it was sold two years later prior to moving back home it remained stock because I felt I had no need to improve what was already a pearler of a car from the factory.

A lot of BMW enthusiasts will, no doubt, go nuts about this, especially with how valuable 6s have become in a lot of markets. But this makes a lot of sense in Australia, and for Bill who clearly loves his autobahn stormer having had it for 30 years. This was clearly a very high spec 6 having a lot of toys that were very rarely, if ever, seen in a lot of markets until the end of the line Highline models like the power adjusted sports seats. I hope the family have another happy 30 years with this re-engineered wunder wagon...

My current car is an '86 635csi, one that NEEDS a lot of TLC. Wasn't what I was going after when I bought it, but the car I was trying to get ('98 M3) was sold under me, so I impatiently bought this car. Its been a "project" since for the last few years. Been going through random parts of working on it, including switching the old brown trim to black (vader seats from a late '90s M3)… and recently changing everything out from the cooling system because these old BMWs hate the heat, especially living somewhere like Vegas, and it still not being too happy. I do quite enjoy the look of these cars, I hope I can keep it long enough to be able to get it into some kid of shape like this car, except with a new BMW engine possibly. The Euro bumpers look far better than the ones from the States, and those side skirts, and rear that level out the bottom of the whole car are nice, but hard to find (especially on a budget).
@JohnA...
@JohnA... 6 жыл бұрын
I spent way too much on the vaders, but good luck since they only came on the late 90s M3 as far as I know and if you don't have many of them there thats going to be a hard find for you. I'm good with the mechanical stuff, if it was just some door issues I'd be fine. My drivers side electric locking mechanism decided to snap off inside the door a few years ago, was too lazy to install a keyless entry for a few years so I either unlocked the car from the trunk or the passenger side. I've done all my suspension to this one, sport shocks, springs, and swaybars. That was the easy stuff to deal with. Its the engine (mostly over heating) that is the harder stuff for my taste, especially when doing all the work in an apartment parking lot. all my interior is out except the main seats (and the dash recently because of registration stuff) because I've been turning it all black from the tan it once was. Missing the rear seats in black though, and with money being tight that is going to be on the long list for a while with this car. I'd also love to get my hands on the Euro front & rear bumpers, but that's going to cost thousands to upgrade. I was looking yesterday at the AWD BMWs because I've always had the crazy thought that I'd like to transfer one of the AWD systems & modern motors into the e24... I saw that the 2020 M3 might get an AWD system, and even though I haven't had a new car ever (and probably not the money for it) I can't wait to see an AWD M3. There are other higher output in the 3 series that have AWD as well and that might be a nice car to have.

Sad to say, in some ways, I can already empathize. A flappy-paddle that works snappily (Or, even one of those Tiptronic levers or by whatever name, so something is there for your shifter hand) would be a nice compromise for a daily. ) As real sport-based cars go, I think I'm a holdout for the oldfashioned stick and three pedals whatever happens. Al makes Engineering Explained seem as exciting as a Japanese game show 😂. Doesn't matter to me though. I'm watching anyway. Keep up the good work 👍

Sweet build, nice car. More Alan and co wizardry. Bill must be a cool dude as well! Would have been good to hear his stories on 330k km or so of one car ownership!

Loving this and i’m a BMW Nut... Not a fan of the modern gear selector though.. Fair play to bill for making his image a reality 👍🏻

would of loved to see the paddle shifters in operation. Are the gears fully manually controlled? and is there any lock up?
