@@synchronos1 That is not a stopping signal. The purpose of this signal is to indicate that the gates and lights of the crossing right behind it are correctly working.

Thank you for this rough and wild 'Out-of-Africa' like presentation of Cabview Holland Dutch Railways as it was in the 19th Century. The savanna in the Netherlands is often overlooked, owning in part to the danger in crossing... ferocious animals, outlaws, dissatisfied natives, and lack of amenities (although we did see a KFC and Burger Joint mid-way through the film). Gracias por tu video, Señor Cabview. RT sends, Puebla, México.

I'm confused by the captions which gives reopening dates in 2010. With my family, we holidayed at Gran Dorado, Port Zealande in August 1998. We took a trip from Goes on this line which, at that time terminated at the station at Hoedekenskerk. We have a disabled daughter and this railway has a beautifully refurbished coach which has been adapted with a lift (which folds out through a wide door) to give wheelchair access from the low-level platforms. As I remember, this coach carries a plaque which was awarded by (I believe) a British preservation society for the sympathetic way in which the adaptation was carried out. I'd like to send belated thanks to all the staff and volunteers of the SGB for their help and friendliness during our trip.

I think on many of these museum railways, the signals are present only for visual effect and have no meaning to drivers. Safety would be assured by some other means, such as a section token physically carried by the train.

@@CabviewHolland No, in this level crossing it is either amber or red. In the next one it is indeed white. Check the video and you can see that at 29:42 it is the top light that is lit. In the next one at 31:21 it is the bottom light. That's why the driver stopped, I'm quite sure.
@CabviewHolland
@CabviewHolland Жыл бұрын
@@synchronos1 This faded light bulb gives the impression of being yellow in the video. It is white. The next signal is LED, which is much brighter and cooler. The crossing in question was upgraded with barriers. Strangely enough, the LED was exchanged with this one. See the same location in this video of 2018: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYKYiYeMdpmJr6c. As far as I know, when the crossing is open for road traffic, the light is out.
@synchronos1
@synchronos1 Жыл бұрын
@@CabviewHolland but how is it possible that in the next crossing a different light is lit? It must only be because the signals are giving a different indication. Like I said, compare the signals at 29:42 and 31:21, and you see that a different light is lit in them. In the first one the top light is lit. In the second one the bottom light is lit. Clearly different aspect. In the video you linked you can see that in there the bottom light is lit as well. It is giving a different indication than in this video. To me it seems clear that the signal was giving an indication that the level crossing signals for the road traffic were at fault, so that's why the driver stopped. The fault may just have been a disconnection between the level crossing gates and the signal, but it was still a signal of fault. And probably the correct procedure then is to make the train stop, check if the gates are actually working and no crossing traffic, and then proceed.
@synchronos1
@synchronos1 Жыл бұрын
@@CabviewHolland by the way, the whole signal post is clearly different in the video you linked. It is much higher, has different striping and has a sign that is not present in this video. Clearly the whole signal post has been replaced between 2018 and 2022, so it doesn't sound probable that the light was any faded. But it doesn't even matter, as my point was that in the video the TOP light is lit. In the other video the BOTTOM light is lit, just as in the next crossing of this video. Different position, different indication.

I heard the emergency vehicle, after he stopped, but I was wondering why he stopped in the middle of the crossing. I never saw it, even on re-watching, (yet, anyway), nor heard it over the train until he had stopped it. Later, the engineer has to hop out and throw a switch that wasn't already set for him a couple times. I'd wondered what would happen if a train went backwards through a switch that wasn't set right. I'd assumed it'd damage the flanges of the wheels on the one side, damage the point and the stock rail, where the two met, as a series of wheels forced themselves past them, and eventually get the train stuck. How close am I to guessing correctly? Also, I was wondering why so many stations in that stretch were only open for about twenty years and why the area appeared largely rural from the tracks. Was this an area for a planned housing development that just never took off, and then war happened?
@Kromaatikse
@Kromaatikse Жыл бұрын
It depends on the type of pointwork, of course. These points appear to be held across only by the weight on the lever, so trailing through them probably wouldn't cause very much damage, but it's still best avoided. On the main line, most points will have positive locks and detection, which would be damaged by being run-through. Some points, usually on light-traffic single lines where the signalling has been minimised for cost reasons, have spring-loaded points which are designed to be run-through on a regular basis.

The level crossing 'correct' indictor to th e driver was showing 'not correct', even as the crossing was working correctly with barriers down and warnings sounding. This is a 'right side failure'. Drivers actions, stop, verify, proceed if safe.

Just outside the depot, I recognised what looks very like a BR Class 08 shunter in one of the sidings to the right. Wikipedia doesn't say that any of this type were exported to NL, but a couple were apparently moved to France in recent years. What's the story?

@@CabviewHolland Aha, knowing the date (before 1948) led me to the truth: BR Class 11, following on from the original LMS design. The Class 08 was a slightly modified version with more engine power and lower gearing. NS apparently ordered almost 100 in total of this design directly from English Electric.
