Awesome video. While I can't be certain, your explanation that Sonic just never intercepts the kill plane on a given frame is a plausible and very likely explanation. It makes me wonder if there are potential skips involving going through multiple kill planes at once; while breaching the first kill plane is about a 8% chance, subsequent kill planes should be more likely to breach as Sonic's vertical momentum should continue to rise (unless you're already at terminal velocity when hitting the first kill plane?).

Yes for sure! I think originally people believed that TPSS was actually going through two killplanes but after looking at it when level editor it seemed to not be the case. I think (would need to double check) your idea of Sonic reaching max fall speed is actually true but I'm not absolutely certain.

The Dreamcast version is cool! The only downside of it is cutscenes are unskippable, which kind of makes it unfortunate to not only view but also run as well... I do plan to run it in the near future though if you wanna check out my stream or stay posted on my youtube!

To anyone that watched Dawn's video (Coolio video btw!) and is still confused by the insanity of TPSS, here's another way to look at it. With regular TPS, you have to make sure to get a certain amount of speed. Which means that you have to manage a few things: rings since the car's acceleration ties to that up to 99 rings, the car that you choose which all have different stats for, and where you are on the ledge that you jump down from to get to the lower area. All three of those aspects are needed to land the skip and not fling off to the void below. Now imagine doing THAT but adding an instant kill killplane to the mix that you are PRAYING that Sonic gets past in a category where one little mistake can easily cost a run.

Woahhhh, wait wait wait wait. Okay, so. I THINK that some of the info the speedrunners are looking for might have been found WAY WAY BACK (I'm talking far, FAR back, like in 2006-2007 or something, earliest youtube era) when people were taking unintended characters into other characters' stages and trying to complete the levels. I remember that the way to get Tails, E-103 and Knuckles through the entirety of the cart section of Sonic's Twinkle Park needed to keep them out of bounds carefully from start to finish (the loading trigger for the next section was past a point that would softlock if you jumped down into it, but worked if you glided into it from outside the level). I don't know if there's any of the OG level breakers' videos still buried around in youtube, but if there are, they'd be named things like "Tails in Sonic's Twinkle Park" and stuff like that, and they were pretty much entirely for the original Dreamcast version.

The only good thing about SADX is that the glitches the port introduced makes it easier to speedrun than the Dreamcast version. Everything else is just bad

Funny enough there are actually a ton of glitches on both versions and they are interestingly in quite different spots. For Example, TPSS is actually much easier in Dreamcast because the Killplane just isn't there!

Great video! Genuinely enjoyed. However, 1/12 is not a definitive chance - you could quite easily do 12 runs and not get the skip. It's totally possible to roll hundreds of 12 sided die and never get a 1 - but of course, the more dice you roll the more likely you are.

Oh yeah 100% which is what makes this even worse in all actuality. Some days you could get it 3 times and others none even if you take a ton of runs there. I think it's a big reason people haven't been going for it more.

I know what's happening with that Twinkle Park killplane, you're right about the player falling too fast for it to catch you. Kill planes trigger if the player's position is within 30 Y below the plane's invisible model. Usually this is good enough for the game because the player's fall speed is capped, but the cart's isn't - and that fall is long enough that by the time the player reaches the plane they're travelling just over 30 units downward per frame. The skip happens if they're close enough before hitting it that the next frame puts them outside its kill range. You can test it yourself by changing the kill range, the address it reads is 007DF1C8.

Great explanation! Also seems very consistent from what I’ve been told about the skip from people within the community so this is almost certainly it! I guess the testing then needs to be about what’s the fastest way to get to falling faster than 30 units as soon as possible and maybe they will be able to find a more consistent setup!

It's wild seeing this stuff as the person who wrote the original Sonic Adventure glitch guide back in the day, which is sadly lost to time though I am mentioned in Rattleman's. I've often wondered if anything I discovered went on to be used by Speedrunners. I do remember getting that Ice cap key skip back in the day before it was officially discovered. Makes me wonder how many older games had glitches discovered that were lost to time.

I love Sonic speedruns, but I don't get why they count time spent in the field as part of the run...Well, maybe a little. I wish more Speedruns would go by Sonic rules and not count time in cutscenes and such, since I think it'd actually make speedruns flow better visually.

Sonic Adventure 2 Speedruns actually do what you mention here! I think the big reason why they do count time spent in the field in SADX is because there are a bunch of different routing options/techniques to explore. Like Ice Key Skip for example is never found if there is no need for it, I think there is a world for both to exist but the skill in Hub world movement is also very admirable imo.

A lot of these exploits are unintentional skips made possible by the glitchy port, as there used to be a couple of areas with invisible walls like Speed Highway and trying to skip to the first rocket.

Guys, when you showed me Twinkle Park Skip Skip, i instantly Reconised it! I made the diskovery in the Dreamcast version, and showed it to one of my friends, who had DX port of the game. Skip is pretty simple, and really useful, as this is the tool to use in A-rank Twinkle Park easily. If someone is really interested, to pull the skip you need to speed up at 3 boost pannels before the place of the skip, don't bump or destroy any cars go forward at full speed without hesatation and then hold forward onto the controller. This is pretty simple onto the Dreamcast, but you need to have FULL SPEED, if don't, than it is over
