This drama did it all in such a congratulatory way. Her half sister, even though she was a scheming mean girl, you felt bad for her ending up married to this guy. Even the evil concubine you felt some sort of sadness for when she made her speech to the ML about how she honestly only loved him, and wanted to be favoured by him and that is why she did all these terrible things. That does not excuse her actions but Sword and Brocade put the desperation of these women into the spotlight and how all the evil was sort of brought on by circumstance. Like yes, Qian could've elected to marry a more common man but she was in love with the ML and she was like 16 at the time. I know Chinese dramas aren't meant to be so deep but I appreciate sword and brocade for trying to shine a spotlight onto the reason why

Marriage usually one of politics tricks to strengthen both family power. That's why man have concubines, 'cause majority of man didn't love their wife. Candidate of wife or husband are chosen by parents, youngsters have to obey parents. Usually, the girl who man loves during periodic era aren't favored by parents, if girl are come from "normal" or poor family. Parents make sure their children get married to same status family or royalty if they are lucky. That's why majority wife have to share man with many womens, 'cause wife didn't love husband, and husband didn't love wife. During that era, man can only have 1 wife despite many concubines. Sons and daughters of concubines are powerless in family although they are rich. Sons and daughters of legal wife are powerful, they can make decision if Dad passed away.

Also, this show is particularly based on the poor condition of women in nobel families, who even after all the facilities and wealth, were unhappy. Honestly, I just finished watching this show, and felt sorry for every woman in this show, except Madam Luo and Great Madam Xu. Even Lianfang was framed by Xu Lingyi's first wife, however she sincerely loved him. Of course, Xu Lingyi didn't love her back, but she also didn't deserve to get sacrificed to clear the path for Luo daughters to marry Xu Lingyi. All his concubines were sad and miserable even after all the wealth and facilities, as they neither had freedom nor the love of their husband.

Even shiyi married Lord to search for her mother's killer. Lian Fang was in love with Lingyi, however her methods for gaining his favour were all evil. But she was totally neglected by her husband, so being jealous of legal wife is natural.

She always says she loves him but then go ahead and even harm Zhun to get his attention. Lingyi's own blood. That's not love. That's text book definition of obsession. And narcissism. The reason behind her behaviour and whether she's only partly blamed for it is another topic altogether, but like Lingyi said: Yuanning's scheme will only work if she trespasses to the inner garden. Has she behave herself she will be safe. Second, she was given a chance to live her live even with the incident so it's not like she's a mindless lamb that wasn't given any choice. Third, even with the scheme, Lianfang still poisoned Yuanning first and caused her death. Yuanning is not a saint but I can't say I have any sympathy for Lianfang. She didn't do any single good deed throughout the movie

Since I've only watched S&B through youtube clips, this is what I think the 2nd daughter and concubine mother wanted. In order to secure the spot as Yunniang's (eldest sister and first wife of the Marquis Xu) replacement, Erniang wanted to make sure Shiyi was married off so that by the time one of their own was going to marry into the Xu family she was the only remaining option. She already knew that Shiyi was the first choice to replace their dying eldest sister and wanted to clear out all competition.

Wives are legally protected matriachs so only her children are legal heirs. Concubines are like high class servants used for reproduction. Concubines and wives are not the same class. Illegitimate children cannot inherit property unless they are officially adopted by a wife who has no children of her own. It is very hard to divorce a wife but one can sell or dispose of a concubine easily. High class concubines from important families fare better but still are not legally wives.

I think it's an issue of translation. "Di" is "formal" or "official", so one's "di wife" or "di child" is part of the formal marriage; "shu" is pretty much "side", so a "side wife" or "side child". Calling them "side children" rather than "illegitimate children" would be a little more accurate, but it gets clunky in translation. (A child born entirely out of wedlock, i.e. what's normally considered "illegitimate", is also classed as a "shu" child, but is lower in status than one born to a recognized secondary wife/concubine.)
