I've seen more kids worried about being in Hufflepuff than Slitherin. Whilst the books eventually try to highlight Hufflepuff as friendly and loyal, the general vibe given is that they're the ones that "take the rest". @barbiqueareaАй бұрын
There's no reason to be upset. Snape was ambitious and resourceful, but it didn't prevent him from having a moral backbone and doing the right thing whenever it counted. His love for Lily was the reason he tried to save her life, and then tried to keep Harry safe and protected. He also collaborated with Dumbledore, not to save his own skin or for personal gain, but for the greater good. Not all Slytherins are one note villains. Sometimes even a Gryffindor can out to be bad to the bone as proven by Wormtail.
@SweetSlytherinGirl-JenniferАй бұрын
@barbiquearea Oh, I 100% agree! When I took the test, I will admit I had not read the books yet (have since read them several times), nor had all the movies come out (only up to Goblet or OotP, I think, and now I watch them all annually). So my view of Slytherin was very skewed and narrow at that point. I think that was J's point. Now, I am very proud to be a Slytherin, and even have the crest tattooed on my arm!

Fellow Hufflepuff here. The interesting part is that if you're brave, ambitious, and persue knowledge at the same time, you'll be sorted into Hufflepuff. People misunderstood what it means to be a Hufflepuff, or what the house stands for -- inclusion and unity. He wasn't a coward for not wanting to put himself in potential danger, I absolutely would have been the same way. Long story short, I came to terms very quickly and have been giving Slytherin House a good name ever since. Hogwarts graduate 2013

I got Slytherin too, and always saw it as the misunderstood compassionate house. You can't fault someone for not being brave enough to save the world...but willing to do absolutely anything to keep their loved ones safe. Its like back in Covid when people were stockpiling everything.. you know other people might need that more than you.. but you need to look out for your family.
@aquiamorgan2416Ай бұрын
I was actually a little disappointed that I didn't get Slytherin, honestly. I admire people who are cunning and ambitious. Unfortunately, I operate a little too straightforwardly and take too much of the world at face value to be considered cunning in any way. I dont think I would be incapable of it, but I think molding my thoughts into that sort of shape all of the time would be a rather exhausting way to live. And while I do have goals for myself, I spend a bit too much time justifying to myself that 'good enough is good enough', to be considered truly ambitious. (Or hard working!) And while I am fairly intelligent, and I enjoy learning, I find the idea of learning for the sake of learning (unless you are an actual researcher, obtaining new knowledge at the edge of discovery) to be silly, frivolous and a waste of time, which could be better spent using the knowledge you've obtained for literally any other purpose. Even if that purpose is as simple as petty entertainment. So, three guesses which house I'm in, and the first two don't count. 😂

Not really. I love the world she built, but when you think about how: - House elfs are slaves that enjoy being slaves and the only person to question this is ridiculed - ALL slitheryns in the 7 books that have any sort of important role in the story, have some kind of bias against muggles/muggle-born - All fat characters are evil - All non-white characters have some kind of racist name (Kingsley Shacklebolt, Cho Chang, Parvati Patil) - The problem in the society that gave origin to Voldemort (the racism against muggles and the belief in wizard supremacy) is not solved by the end of the series (everything just goes back to how it was before Voldemort) Amongst other things that happened in the books. Reading Harry Potter was a great part of my childhood, but looking back, the great message is: fight to keep everything like it is, and fight the problems that arise from this system. If we take a look at Percy Jackson, we see Percy in the end trying to change the problem in the system. All the problems happened because the gods didn't care for their children. So in the end, when offered immortality as a god, Percy asks instead that the gods swear by the river Styx that they care for and claim every single demigod. What I'm saying is that the story could have been much better

In retrospective and the later books becoming more adult, less childish, it would have been good if at least a couple of slitherins would have stayed, sitting at the complete opposite end of the table of Malfoy and co. All the welcome letters say something about each of the other houses. Ravenclaw is probably the nicest of the three to slytherin. "They're not all bad, but you'd do well to be on your guard until you know them well." We're the only house that'll even give them a chance at civility. Benefit of the doubt. In fact the ravenclaw prefect writing it has way more negative to say about gryffindor. Slytherin's rude description of ravenclaw kinda stings a little.
@hello-lz4xjАй бұрын
The most accepting of the slytherins are the Ravenclaws. They can understand some of their qualities. Unlike Hufflepuffs, they don't care how others think, and unlike Gryffindor, they don't think of themselves as the good guys while the slytherins are the bad guys. Ravenclaws are open minded and independent, so obviously they would be fine with slytherins even though they're in the "evil" house
@jayt9608Ай бұрын
In the books, while each side stands on its own, Gryffindor and Hufflepuff are mostly aligned together while the same holds true with the houses of Ravenclaw and Slytherin. I actually would not be surprised to see that there also tended to be intermarriages between the two factions of each side. The alignments are very like, though each house has qualities that the others can value for themselves.

That "Fraternity" house trait is interesting, and really gets at the heart of the Paradox. Forming close bonds with the people around you is by no means a bad thing. That's _literally_ what friendship is. But the Slytherins in the book show us how it can be misused. Draco has Crabbe and Goyle (and I guess Blaize?), who work together as friends to lift each other up, by virtue of taking others down. Same with Pansy Parkinson and her unnamed group of girls. They may or may not genuinely like each other (sometimes groups like these do betray each other), but the danger comes not from who you include, but from who you _exclude._ It's sort of a tautology that pretty much everyone in the world does the most that they can do to better the lives of the people they care about. And that careful wording means that it extends even to dangerous people who hurt others for their own gain. They ARE helping everyone they care about. Just themselves, no one else. A lot of the world's horrors come from people hurting each other, because they simply do not care about the feelings of those particular people. Whether they inherently have no empathy (Voldemort), or have had it shut off by intense hatred (Harry's Crucio) or long-standing demonization of other groups (such as Muggle-borns). If you don't care for those people, there is no motivation (other than laws) to avoid hurting those people. Worded this way, a solution to the problem opens up. Not to make other people change, but to allow yourself to. It's easy to say and very hard to do: Care about everyone. Force yourself to, by constantly reminding yourself that other people are complete beings with their own feelings, desires, and life stories, and part of the group of Humans that you share with everyone. Don't get swept up in divisive us-vs-them battles. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that an entire group shares the qualities of one person within that group. They are not a mass of group-members, they are each and every one of them a named character with complete backstory and character arc. Without exception. Keep reminding yourself of this, day after day, and before you know it it will have become second nature, and you will officially have intentionally changed yourself for the better. Though do also remember that being inclusive of everyone does not mean being accepting of everything anyone ever does. There are still people hurting others who need to be stopped. But doing so while understanding that they're a person is going to get you a great deal farther than doing so while thinking of them as an inhuman monster. This also helps you avoid the trap of forgiving horrible behavior from your own friends or allies due to them being "the good guys" and thus necessarily justified. _Everyone's_ harm should be reduced, and the sad truth is that sometimes, the people who like you are the only ones who will bother listening to you.

Honestly this is the most thought out and best way of thinking that I’ve been trying to adopt myself. I didn’t have a way to explain it beyond love your neighbor but they make sense. I genuinely deeply respect your perspective and wish to do the same. It’s hard but I’ve made it a point to remember that we’re all human and we have our own thoughts and feelings and aspirations.

Also I’ve been sorted into slytherin and I love every moment of it. I have been met with some of the weird looks and ooohs when I bring up my house but I roll with it and turn it into a joke.
@riluna3695Ай бұрын
@@_Sleepyhollow_ That "love thy neighbor" idea is a very good example of this, because it can describe both the correct and loving way to go about this, AND the twisted and harmful way. Imagine someone like Draco Malfoy being told to do that. He would naturally lean towards interpreting it to mean that his fellow Slytherins and fellow Death Eater allies are the neighbors he needs to show love towards, and would assume that those "further away" from this core demographic no longer qualify. After all, "neighbor" just means those who live near you, right? You could hardly say that he and Harry are neighbors, when they live so far apart both literally and figuratively. Under this wording, my recommendation ends up sounding like "you're best off thinking of everyone on earth as your neighbor". And many people already do interpret that command this way. Typically how you read an ambiguous line such as "love thy neighbor" comes down to how you were already thinking before you heard it. An empathetic person will hear it and think "yes, the whole world is my neighbor", and someone who has picked up bigotry from some source or other will quickly decide that no, only those close to me count. Or at the very least, not _them._ All told, it ends up being a rather useless wording because of that dangerous level of uncertainty and flexibility. So I'm glad I can help provide a different framework to use as you pursue your own continued growth. Best of luck to you, and thank you for your kind words

Reading your post made me realize that I’m not wrong in wanting to empathic to others. I’m sure you’re a blessing to those who know you and those who don’t. Basic Slytherin traits are not inevitably evil, they are just easier to turn evil if taken to the extreme. There is no character trait that can't be turned evil. I even know an "evil Hufflepuff". I'm a Slytherin surrounded by only Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw friends. Enough said.

I always thought that was kind of prejudice of Harry to assume that at least one Slytherin wouldn’t want to be part of Dumbledore’s Army. Surely that attitude of exclusion is just going to push those Slytherins into the arms of the Death Eaters who will accept them (even if those Slytherins didn’t really want to).
@abraham2172Ай бұрын
Harry had very good reasons though, even before the foundation of the DA, the strong impression was that Slytherin overall supported Umbridge and her methods, for example her rigorous "defending" the Slytherin seeker and robbing the Gryffindor Quidditch team of three of its best players after they beat the Slytherin team. Looking at how the Slytherins became Inquisition team members and profited massively from it, Malfoys high position within the house and how the DA was eventually ratted out to Umbridge, they likely would have been crushed immediantly if they told any Slytherins of their plans.

I hope I have more of that! The important thing is having a good goal and a good way to reach it. All the houses have something to work about, Gryffindor have to learn that being brave is not being reckless. Ravenclaw have to deal with perfeccionism and give value to intra and interpersonal intelligence, Hufflepuff have to learn how to be loyal but with healthy limits for their wellbeing. Ravenclaw here. :) And no, it didn't cause me to look down at anyone, was a bit older reading the books and understood that was the issue. The 'Core' issue with Slytherins in the Books was they were all part of the 'favor network' of Voldemort. Voldemort, who used the nature of the house against it to put himself on top of the heap. ...however, you want to see the 'good face' of Slytherin, there's simply one thing to show you the good side of Slytherin: His name is Slughorn, the old-boy's-network, the group working to get ahead with the help of your friends at the expense of others, wanting to build such a collections of favors and debts owed between each other that you loose track and just work towards each-other. The 'merit' of wanting the favor-flow very-much can spread to anyone, inside the house or not, like with Slughorn, it is just that all the Slytherins understand how their friendships work: Make yourself of value to other Slytherins and they'll do their best to do it for you as well.

There’s also the Hufflepuff paradox. The one where you’re automatically deemed a push over or useless because you’re sorted into it. Maybe that’s why there’s the whole thing with Slytherin and Hufflepuff vibing so well together despite differences.
@skyblue27083 күн бұрын
That's not a paradox. There is no contradiction there because that is the common consensus of the house even in universe... It might not be a correct opinion, but it is the common one. The Slytherin paradox is a paradox because it contradicts the stereotype present in the books/movies, in that everybody except for people being sorted into Slytherin were being prejudiced in reality, which is the opposite of what happened in the books/movies.

Not being able to find too many dark wizards who were Hufflepuff kind of makes sense. Their main traits are things like loyalty, honesty, kindness, caring, etc. Traits that are generally considered the defining characteristics of good people, and certainly the ones of those who would be least likely to start dealing with evil magic. Especially since they'd have spent their formative years around other loyal, kind, and caring people.

But she said something that made sense to me: That every Gryffindor needs a Slytherin to rein them in when they go off half-cocked trying to do the chivalrous thing and save everybody to their own detriment. Slytherin, therefore is the keeper of self-care, the practical thing that has your adult self putting your own mask first in a plane before you put one on your child. That is how you save both of you. We need each other.

The key difference is their virtue and how well they can act on said virtues when the rubber meats the road. For Gryffindors, the virtue that makes them standout is their courage. When tested to stand up for their convictions and do the right thing, Gryffindors tend not to go against their conscious even if doing so would be inconvenient to them. For Slytherins, their virtue is ambition. While Gryffindors can be ambitions, their virtue will prevent them from doing whatever it takes to fulfill their ambitions. But Slytherins are not often constrained by moral hangups, they will often do whatever it takes, even if sometimes it means compromising their morality. That is why when they have to meet a challenge. A Gryffindor will boldy meet it head on without considering the consequences, whereas a Slytherin will do a cost-benefit analysis and find the best way to deal with the challenge that will give them the best possible outcome.

E.g. being in Slytherin meant you were ambitious and cunning and those traits were what you most valued, not that Slytherins were evil. I'm a Gryffindor, so I'm not biased. Just because one or two Slytherins do some horrible things doesn't mean the whole house is evil. The other houses have bad eggs too. e.g. Gryffindor - Peter Pettigrew, Hufflepuff - Zacharias Smith, Ravenclaw - Gilderoy Lockhart.

This is just a bit of fan brainstorming, but I've been wondering: What happens if Hogwarts waits a few years before sorting the students into their houses? What if, for example, all students spend year 1 and year 2 in a "general common room", especially since they don't really get to participate that much in the house points? I wonder how that would effect house perception if you weren't worried about what house you joined when you first got to Hogwarts and instead were told to look forward to it at the start of your third year, as an example. Just something I've been thinking about, mostly playing off Dumbledores' "[...] Perhaps we sort too soon." line from the books.
@najpotenicewolf934Ай бұрын
It's an interesting idea. Because, how much can you really tell of someone values and personality when they're still eleven years old? They mostly didn't even start hitting puberty yet.I feel like division into houses should be more connected to their interest and potential in skills, connecting to taught subjects. Like for students that may have high potential in becoming healers and working with medical stuff (or also plants and creatures), people who are good at charms and transfigurstion so they may become some sort of invertors to better the magic. Also maybe a field for more offensive/defensive talented students that could become aurors.Students who are better at understanding wizarding history and social contructs (something like wizarding human studies).

Another creator was talking how being Slytherin are kinda like in a self fulfilling prophecy. Kids in other houses shunned and isolate the Slytherin because they were told Slytherins are evil. So that's leaving a bunch of kids with all these prejudices taught by their parents together and echoes those ideas back at each other and reinforced their believe. That plus the isolation lead them to become who they are, and the cycle continues. A better writer might able to use that ideas to actually redeem the Slytherin. their redemption was really bad and pretty much non existence. I don't really buy Harry had a change of mind on Slytherin and it's only there to show him being a better person letting go of old grievous and prejudices.

She always pretends to be Pansy when they play Hogwarts. She’s always loved anti heroes ( the Grinch, Jack Skelington). I like to think there’s some allegory here about needing to embrace and acknowledge your darkness lest it sneak up on you and create problems in your life, also it feels connected to the wild woman archetype, typically more comfortable in the reality of the grime, gore and ugliness in nature that can give birth to incredible beauty.
