Been there, done that. I used to fly in one of these via Pan Am non-stop from JFK to NRT (and then onward to who knows where else as a final destination). The SP had some 1st-class and cattle-car sections but it was mostly business class. I did this, I don't know how many dozen times. I miss those days of travel and adventure.

I flew on United 747-SP soon after UAL took over Pan Am Asia routes. Tokyo to SFO I recall we cruised at 53,000 ft and hit the jet stream such that we were two hours early! I could see us passing other planes heading in same direction well below us.

First search for information and think. 35,000 ft is a common altitude for every other airliner. Here it is written that max altitude is 45,000 ft so David Hoffman is probably right. www.747sp.com/747sp-specifications/

The enlarged tailplane was actually designed to make it handle like a regular 747, by compensating for the loss in leverage. Using it meant pilots rated for the 747 didn't have to be rerated for the 747-SP.

Qantas used to run an SP up the east coast of Australia stopping at all stations and then Cairns after which it flew to Changi and returned via Darwin then back to Melbourne to start again. QF also used the SP for trans pacific flights to LA Tom Bradley. I liked the old SP's and travelled on the last one before retirement of the type.

Japan Air also had these for high density routes. Unfortunately one crashed in the mountains in August 1985 killing 520 people, the worst single-aircraft incident in history. There were 4 survivors, however. The aircraft lost its tail in-flight due to improper repair from a previous tailstrike. On a slightly lighter note, the Qatar Amiri Royal flight used to operate a 747SP out of Hurn airport, Dorset. As a kid it was the largest aircraft I had ever seen in the flesh and thought it was awesome.

Robert Heinkel Ah, yes, my mistake! Said aircraft was in fact a 747SR, not SP. The SR was designed exclusively for JAL - It was based off the 747-100. However, the Qatar Amiri aircraft I mentioned was definitely an SP - It would have to be to get in and out of Bournemouth! Cheers

The SP even has a smaller version, the prince of Qatar is selling his right now, and they chopped off nearly 50 feet aft of the wing, my work has it in right now for service and maintenance before the sale and just got to tour it... the damn thing has a gold plated hand held bidet, not my kind of luxury, but to each their own. Sale seems to have fallen through, apparently they only want $5 Million currently, but maybe they were turned off by $350,000 price tag to fill up the tanks, lol

The pic of the airport that the Qantas SP is taking off at is Wellington NZL. I was in the front row of the first 747SP into Wellington. I recall the pilot hit the brakes so hard stuff just flew and hit the front bulk head. The pilot must have realised he'd overcooked the braking by then releasing the brake. It was a real jerk back and forth.

I've just been google earthing. Pity I can't paste in what I am looking at. I've managed to replicate where I think the shot woud have been taken. A big zoom lens. The SP has touched down from the North, To me it looks like a shot from the NE side of the runway looking over Lyall Bay towards Te Raekaihau Point, the bare headland. Mate, show me somewhere else. The Qantas SP was a frequent visitor to Wellington.
