Adore is an acquired taste, unlike Mellon Collie, Siamese Dream or even Machina. You can get hooked to those with the first listens but it takes patience and time to truly appreciate Adore as the masterpiece it is.

Adore is a hidden jewel... Only a portion of their previous fans could understand what they offered. In fact Adore was underrated because the Pumpkins completely changed their style. Billy Corgan leaded a masterpiece carefully thought in his details (including the photography by Yelena Yemchuck). The result was a beautiful acoustic-electronic dark album.

I love it cuz it was such a tough time for him so it's like he retreated to his inner child and drew influences from music he grew up listening to, like New Order, Joy Division, The Cure, Bowie, early U2 mostly British music from the 80's and so had to work around it without the drummer whose almost like the secondary member. He lost his mom, the keyboardist died of an overdose on tour, the drummer was too hooked on drugs to continue playing, went through a divorce and was also having a tough time with his record label. So many things were going on hence the very gothic (and real British 80's gothic not fake) style of the music. The definition of an underrated masterpiece, critics and fans didn't think much of it at the time, but yes they did go in a whole new direction.

It's strange because I know this is supposed to be the idea of what the attitude towards adore was. But that wasn't my experience at the time (I was in 7th or 8th grade and had been a fan since Siamese Dream). I remember all of my friends liking Adore a lot, just as it seems everyone still loves it to this day. My first SP show was a massive block party held in Minneapolis during the Adore tour. It was the largest, craziest crowd I've ever seen in front of SP and I've seen them 7 times. Adore rules.

Radiohead is my favorite band of all time. Just recently got into Smashing Pumpkins. From the rip, Adore has easily made its way into my top 5 favorite albums of all time, without a doubt. This album is a true masterpiece in every sense. I mention Radiohead because this album reminds me of all the same reasons I love Radiohead. Dark, beautiful, and "experimental". Adore is the first album within the last few years that has truly floored me. I'm upset I never gave the Pumpkins a chance until recently, but so so so glad I did.

I send my greetings to each and everyone in this comment section, wherever you are. We share something really special and sentiment here. And a bit of info: "Originally named “48 Chords” as a commentary on the unusual high number of piano chords played, “Blank Page” is about Corgans marriage ending. According to himself, he felt it was odd he had not written about it earlier, but only with this song could express how he felt about it."

What makes Adore the crown jewel of the SP catalogue is that no matter the song they can perform it so many different ways live. That is the genius of Adore. Perfect example: listen to Pug on 98 tour vs 99 tour. Amazing eargasm either way.
