The LP was a lot more of a group project vs Billy playing everything but drums, like on 1st two albums. Nice to hear James & Darcy's playing!
@CXMusicProductions11 жыл бұрын
this is a weird hybrid 70's psychedelic-bee-gees song. my god, that romantic ballad climb at 1:39 culminating in the falsetto. so cheesy, and yet this song fits the album so well. this song is beautiful. james was definitely the hidden genius of the band. mellon collie is everything a rock album should be - being totally confident in yourself and your craft and not giving two shits of what anyone else thinks. thank you for this.
@Lysaria9410 жыл бұрын
I agree completely about the album, however, I find these comments that crop up so often about how James (or Jimmy, or Darcy) were the genius/soul/etc behind the band to be misinformed. As earl as Gish and on everything that came after, Corgan was the singular driving force. Nearly everything you hear on Siamese Dream, for example - almost all the instrumentation - is played by Billy. That was the heart of the conflict within the band, in fact, the lack of creative input given to the others, to the point of not even actually playing on many of the 'band's' songs. Whether you love or hate the Pumpkins and whatever you think of the newer work, credit (or blame) rests squarely with Billy Corgan.
@CXMusicProductions10 жыл бұрын
Perdisis True on all points. I totally forgot I wrote this 10 months ago, haha. But even then I understood that the Pumpkins was Billy's vision, so I may have used too strong a term when I said "genius". So let me rephrase: I wasn't trying to attribute all of the band's success and spirit to James. I meant that James brought something to the Pumpkins that emphasized and/or expanded the band's sound, if even so slightly. Billy has said it himself: While Iha wasn't the best musician, he had a presence that influenced Billy to write differently than he would alone. Mayonaise and Soma are obvious examples where James started something and Billy completed them. But MCIS demonstrates the malleability and flexibility of the band, coincidentally when Billy started putting out more James b-sides and giving his bandmates some more freedom on the album. So, while Billy may have written 95-8% of the material, James' presence definitely had a hand in it. Today, the band maintains its diverse, kickass sound, but today it truly is Billy writing all the material, and it sounds different, not just on a stylistic level, but also on a spiritual one, because it's one guy doing the music and the others truly following along. After all, the fractured relationships within the original band, while not good personally, made it what it was. Also, James did some pretty unique stuff live during the MCIS-Machina eras. I think there's a reason why A Perfect Circle has brought him back, and it's because, while James certainly isn't prolific, he brings 'something' to that band, so, if anything, we can give him credit there. Not a driving force and certainly not Corgan, but definitely not useless either. James is one of those musicians who either doesn't get enough credit for what contributions he has made, but gets TOO much credit from people who are into him. He wrote no more than 20 songs for the Pumpkins over his 13 years with them, and at his worst resented Corgan's vision (yet didn't have the courage to quit and strike out on his own). However, he brought something to the band and influenced Billy to expand his own songwriting a little bit, so we'll leave it at that.

I agree with the initial statement. Billy is the obvious genius and Iha the secret genius of the group. Peace 🌜

Take me down, to the underground Won't you take me down, to the underground Why oh why? There is no light And if I can't sleep, can you hold my life? And all I see is you And take my hand; I lost where I began In my heart I know all of my faults Will you help me understand? And all I believe in you; you're the other half of me Soothe and heal When you sleep, when you dream, I'll be there if you need me Whenever I hear you sing There is a sun, it'll come, the sun, hear them call me down I held you once, a love that once, and life had just begun And you're all I see And trumpets blew, and angels flew on the other side And you're all I see, and you're all I'll need There's a love that God puts in your heart

"Mellon Collie" is great, but it could've made an even stronger single LP. Some of the lesser songs sound like B-sides, but this one comes off as pure filler.
