A tribute video to Georges Méliès the French film director. The video references his silent film "A Trip to the Moon" (1902). He was a film pioneer well known for developing special effects and taking audiences on strange, surreal journeys. If you notice the ship name at the end of the video it is the S.S. Méliès. Great song, great video.

Everyone was talking about this video when it was released. The Smashing Pumpkins, I'll say it again, has one of the most diverse collections of songs. Their videos, many of them, were very expensive to produce. However, many of them made a lasting impression on me. There is a behind-the-scenes of this video on KZbin. Billy's talent is so underrated to the point of frustration. The Smashing Pumpkins, along with Nirvana, Oasis and Stone Temple Pilots, saved the 90s for me when it came to music.

My favorite song of all time:) Billy once explained that the song is about himself, and how he was able to get out of his hometown of Chicago to pursue his dreams. For myself I see the song as leaving my youth behind and accept that I've changed and that I'm getting older.

I lived in Chicago in the mid to late 90s and my roommate at the time dragged me to a party where he grew up .....the burbs....I didnt know at the time, but it was the same area Billy Corgan was from.......how did i find out? at the party, the TV was on and a Smashing Pumpkins video was on.......and one of the guys there saw the vid and said "my older brother used to kick his ass everyday at school".........and I wanted to say something back along the lines "now hes rich and famous whats your brother up to?" but I was kind of the outsider of the group so I just smiled quietly to myself

Melon Colie I feel is criminally underrated. One of the greatest albums of all-time. So freaking creative. I don't know why the Pumpkins have kind of faded the way they have, probably because of Corgan, but you can't deny how powerful this album was. This was the equivalent of a Zeppelin in the 90's. Most people on KZbin are too young to even remember but they were huge for a good 10 years.

It is one of their great love songs, about transcending limitations no matter the consequences. In the video the couple has been to the moon and back, to the deepest parts of the sea, even beyond their wildest dreams (tonight tonight) and experienced the good and the bad together. It became a secret song for me and my gf. Back when her overbearing mother didn't want her dating anyone. Fortunately her mother was the only person in the world who didn't know, even her own family, friends and relatives knew but never told her. Nov 14th will be 23 years for us, still together.

I’ve been shouting for this video for years I think. Wow… so interesting that you don’t have a reference point for the silent film era. Big Pumpkins fan here, especially throughout the 90s and 00s. His voice has always been divisive. Obviously the fans love it or at least appreciate it and it's uniqueness. The music and lyrics have always been what elevates them to me. But I'll be brutally honest.... I m believe that voice is the single-most thing that turns music fans away from the Pumpkins. I truly believe in a different universe if Billy had a more traditional, basier rock voice, they'd be much bigger than even the great heights they accomplished. More people wouldn't have gotten hung up on "that voice" and they would've concentrated more on the genius of his song writing, lyrics, and composure of the songs... which in my opinion are some of the best in the last few decades.

It might not seem like a big deal now, but at the time, it was pretty daring to have a rock song with strings in it. It happened before, but not often. They really went out on a limb. That's part of the reason why they were embraced by the alternative kids, but it took a little while for the mainstream rockers to like the band.

Corgan has said that the song pays homage to Cheap Trick, with its black humoresque lyrics and theme, and that the song is addressed to himself, who escaped from an abusive childhood against all odds, so as to keep him believing in himself

I had no idea until a few years ago that the guy who did the art for this video also did Pee Wee Herman's set! I learned that at an art exhibit of his. Such an awesome exhibit!
