I feel like this song more than others would do better as a Radiohead song. For the simple reason that I think it would be MUCH more interesting with a lot more layers of instruments. Seems like the addition of the clarinet and its effects does a LOT to bring out what’s interesting about the song, and could use even more layers than just this. But it’ll be what it’ll be in the end. I do wish that The Smile would do more overdubs in the studio. There’s no reason to limit what you do in the studio to what you can do live.

I wish they'd stop taking great ideas for songs and then stripping them down to their core. Retain the original arrangement... More energy and oomph... Always end up with whispery quiet, acoustic arrangements that lack the excitement of the initial idea.

I agree but also disagree. Thom gets bored with repetition of his songs and the version we get on lps is often already stale to him and drained of vitality. He's always needed a producer who will force him into a corner and catch the moment of a song when it is in the inspirational stage... but he's always done the opposite and procrastinated over songs for years. BUT... Very often the recorded, deconstructed versions catch up with me down the road and I suddenly love them. And that is because by that time I have lived with the song for years as Thom had when he recorded it and find myself where he was then: where the deconstructed studio take is suddenly new and fresh. In some ways we are jsut behind the curve... the band took the whole journey, we are just getting snapshots.

That's literally all Thom's music, including Radiohead. But the good thing is all the versions of various songs still exist, even if only in live form. Think of it less as 'losing' a version you liked and more like gaining a new version. People obssess too much about studio recordings being definitive but it doesn't matter. Thom has no idea really what to do with his music. As a longtime listener i've known that for many years. He has himself given examples such as Nigel Godrich pinpointing the core of a great song out of a 10 minute early dirge of Harrowdown Hill. Thom doesn't know what will land with anyone but himself. And then of couse he will get totally bored or dissatisfied with a song himself and dismantle it and reconstruct it.
@JasonSeidman9 ай бұрын
@@Chinaboatman 100% agree, if you asked me what my favorite Radiohead songs were I'd have to mention the specific versions I like, whether from the recorded version, live version, or live version that differed era by era. What makes this different for me is that I've never heard an unreleased Radiohead song take a downgrade from one early live version to the next, though.
