@dynjarren83554 ай бұрын
@@chrishedge887 I would say the Rickenbacker guitar was the Beatles influence on Dinizio. Both Lennon and Harrison played Rickenbachers which gave that jingle jangle sound of Sixties pop that is distinctive. Especially if it’s a 12 String. The Byrds Roger McGuinn also played one so he could get that sound as well. It’s unmistakable!

Such a great tone. Check out the live performance on Dennis Miller Show in ’91. Jim plays a 620/12. I don’t understand why bands don’t use them more often. Whenever I see one played in a band it always gets me to listen.

Watching these guys do what they always did the best, perform live, is such a treat. Within days of 27 years ago The Smithereens were at their professional best and most confident. Especially on stage! Pat's beautiful melodic voice paired with a super strong rhythm section and my favorite, that chainsaw buzzing, screaming, roaring by Jim Babjak's Rickenbacker. I just found this video and it's a time capsule that I wish I could step into. Thanks for the upload!

The Smithereens are so underrated...they are like Cheap Trick - music fans first and foremost, realllly talented players, excellent songs with bite and huge hooks...of the people and, throwing down incredible performances of The Who's TOMMY front-to-back or, full Beatles sets just cuz they wanna have some fun...and, THEY CAN...I saw them live in 85, 87 and 90/91? and, they were louder than bombs, tighter than tight, smiling like a bunch of 12yr old kids rocking out for the first time and, totally committed to their audience and the task at hand. Lunch box guys on a rock and roll mission! RIP - Pat! He can't be "replaced" EVER BUT - Marshall Crenshaw is an excellent choice of people to bring into the Smithereens family...he is a music geek, with amazing chops who is incredibly respectful and committed to the songs that Pat wrote. He's a class act.

They were still a great band in ‘95 (and to this day), but their peak was ‘89-‘91, when they released 11 and Blow Up. They cracked the top 40 with those two albums, but grunge came along after that, and totally changed the musical landscape. Hooks and intelligent lyrics were replaced with angst and mumbling.
@fords_nothere_1007 жыл бұрын
For sure - they were a more popular, charting band in 1990 but I was more talking about sheer performance. They're 15 years into being the Smithereens at this stage and beyond the struggles of getting a break. Pat's voice is fantastic and they sound like an experienced, confident rock band.

Wow, I just can't stop watching. Back in the day I saw The Who, The Beatles, Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Remains, Vanilla Fudge, Spirit, Jefferson Airplane, Chicago Transit Authority, The Doors, Fleetwood Mac, Crazy World of Arthur Brown, The Music Machine, Soft Machine, Strawberry Alarm Clock, etc. This live performance of "Blood and Roses" blows me away and ranks right up there with the best bands of the 1960s. Long live The Smithereens. Pat DiNizio, RIP.
