you know.....I don't know why more people aren't privy to them. When I mention my favorite bands I kind of say the Smithereens last because most people never heard of them or thought they were good. My favorite bands; I'd probably put the bands I've come back to over and over for personal reasons and the songs are just good....maybe I'd put them at a tie w STP/ Pretenders for the 5th spot. When I met Pat by accident back in like 2010? I wish I wouldv'e mentioned that I never knew that the song "William Wilson" was about a ghost......when I became a fan of theirs, I was 14 and the house I grew up in was without a doubt haunted! Even my stepdad being a very science minded guy became aware of some things that was going on. It wasn't until I was late 20's revisiting some of my old cd/cassette favorites that I really listened to the lyrics and was dumbfounded. I wonder if the ghost in the house liked that song too.....as I used to play it over and over. Lol.

A statement from Jim, Dennis & Mike Today we mourn the loss of our friend, brother and bandmate Pat DiNizio. Pat had the magic touch. He channeled the essence of joy and heartbreak into hook-laden three minute pop songs infused with a lifelong passion for rock & roll. I taught in Pat DiNizio's former high school, so I used to walk past the wall of fame everyday to get to my classroom. Pat's face on his plaque welcomed me each morning. We in Jersey have a sense of pride for our own. Just last night, I saw the band perform for the first time although I have always been familiar with their tunes as a singer songwriter. I know that they still record and tour, but I miss this band with DiNizio in the lineup. Because they often get enmeshed with the identity of the band, it's hard for most acts to remain at least as successful (whether you guage that metric in terms of record sales, box office numbers, creative/aesthetic quality of the recorded product, or any combination of two of these three or all three) as they continue on after the departure of the original lead vocalist -- whether that be due to firing, quitting, or death. There are a few exceptions to this rule (Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Faith No More, Can, and Black Flag offered as a sampling from that shortlist), but the rule still holds

We hired him for a "living room concert." It was Pat and a couple guitars. I was pretty young at the time, still in college and I got a little too drunk and accidentally knocked one of his guitars over. But the sound carried across the water and it was like we were there anyway-we listened to this song from the front yard. We ended up married, have raised a family and are now grandparents. Hearing this took me right back- makes it seem like time passed so quickly! I’m sorry to hear of Pat’s passing on…I’m having a real “appreciate the time you have” moment here.

Long post alert…It was 1994 and I was on a flight coming back to Chicago from a job interview in Minnesota when I saw this very grungy, kinda weird looking dude walking down the aisle. I kept saying to myself “please don’t sit next to me” because he also looked like he was going to be stinky. And of course, he plops down right next me. So I tell him, “look, I don’t fly well, so you might wanna change your seat.” He said, “me neither, so we’re just gonna have to ride this out together.” I curse under my breath, like sh*t, this is gonna be a long flight! He then introduced himself and asked me my name, where I was from, etc. I told him I was coming from a job interview and I asked him what he did. He said he was a musician and was in a band, but that I’d probably never heard of it. I told him that was into all kinds of music, so maybe I had. He said he was the lead singer of the Smithereens. I was like, wait a minute, “Only a Memory Smithereens? I have that album” And he expressed his surprise that I’d heard of them, then laughed and said yeah that’s me. So we takeoff and immediately there is a lot of turbulence, so much so that it knocked our drinks over. And at some point, I don’t remember which one of us grabbed the other first, but for the remainder of the flight, we stayed locked in this panic stricken, death clutch. Thank goodness it was a relatively short flight, but we got each other through it. After we landed we exchanged numbers, because ironically, the job I had interviewed for was partially to oversee the bookings of concerts at the university I had attended. A few months later, after I got the job, I reached out to Pat to try and book them, but unfortunately his tour schedule couldn’t accommodate our dates, but we had a nice chat and he wished me well. Whenever I hear this song, it always brings a smile to my face as I fondly remember those moments on that flight. So Pat, may you forever RIH! ❤️ Oh yeah, he didn’t smell bad at all!

Pat DiNizio passes away It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Pat DiNizio, lead singer and songwriter of the influential New Jersey rock band, The Smithereens - America’s Band. Pat was looking forward to getting back on the road and seeing his many fans and friends. Please keep Pat in your thoughts and prayers. LONG LIVE THE SMITHEREENS ! RIP MY BROTHER ! YOU WILL MISSED MORE THAN WORDS CAN SAY !
