Cemetry Gates was featured on the groups album, The Queen Is Dead, released in 1986.
Lyrics
A dreaded sunny day
So I meet you at the cemetry gates
Keats and Yeats are on your side
A dreaded sunny day
So I meet you at the cemetry gates
Keats and Yeats are on your side
While Wilde is on mine
So we go inside and we gravely read the stones
All those people, all those lives
Where are they now?
With loves, and hates
And passions just like mine
They were born
And then they lived
And then they died
It seems so unfair
I want to cry
You say : "'Ere thrice the sun done salutation to the dawn"
And you claim these words as your own
But I've read well, and I've heard them said
A hundred times (maybe less, maybe more)
If you must write prose/poems
The words you use should be your own
Don't plagiarise or take "on loan"
'Cause there's always someone, somewhere
With a big nose, who knows
And who trips you up and laughs
When you fall
Who'll trip you up and laugh
When you fall
You say : "'Ere long done do does did"
Words which could only be your own
And then produce the text
From whence was ripped
(Some dizzy whore, 1804)
A dreaded sunny day
So let's go where we're happy
And I meet you at the cemetry gates
Oh, Keats and Yeats are on your side
A dreaded sunny day
So let's go where we're wanted
And I meet you at the cemetry gates
Keats and Yeats are on your side
But you lose
'Cause weird lover Wilde is on mine
Sure!

Magnificent. My own dear dad is buried in the subject cemetery (Manchester's Southern cemetery), and right near his grave is a stone with the words ... "Born, lived and died". I'd like to think that was where Moz got it from on his walks with Linder, but, who knows.

I bought this vinyl randomly from an HMV in Toronto, Canada and excitedly brought it back to my home in London, Eastend. As random as it gets. That was back in the summer of 2012. I was 14 then. I'm 24 now. Guess we're all part of different eras, but songs like these, they're universal. I'll never stop loving this song from the moment I heard it, as many have before me and will continue to do or have done. Two and a half minutes of, I don't know, coming out of yourself. Looking around the world, appreciating it, observing it. "With love and hates and passions just like mine, they were born, and then they lived, and they died. It seems so unfair. I want to cry"

@Over Educated sp Well of course I agree, but I also think you have to give them their own space to discover music that speaks to them, that speaks to who they are and who they want to be. Remember all of the older folks who hated our music? Who said "The Smiths? Blech," to which we said "You don't understand"? We defined ourselves by that music, and so your daughters are doing the same thing. Liking the Smiths was like being a part of a secret club, and it still feels that way!

I visit him every so often.. I lost the photo and the etching, so his name is now lost to the ages. Gone but not forgotten, 170 yrs later.

Another fun fact: Mozzer actually misspelled “cemetery” to “cemetry” on purpose. It is a pun on the misspelling of the phonetically pronounced word “symmetry.” However, I cannot divulge the TRUTH on why Mozzer did this. Most of his songs are a puzzle. This is why he exclaimed that “The World Won’t Listen.”

I was in college when this was released. We played it nonstop. I wonder if things were better then. Certainly simpler. We had to go to a record store for music and we flipped through albums which was an experience just because of the cover art. Also the vibe of the indy record store was something in and of itself. You'd hear about an album and talk to the owner and he'd open it up and play it for you. I'd have different record stores on my go-to list. I remember walking into Bleecker Bob's in the Village and my friend thought I was the s*** just because I knew about the place. I'm sure I bought something that day.

@@tetedepoulet8651 I was fortunate to work in a more mainstream record store right after high school. I must have visited that manager every week for a year and finally wore him out to get that job! It was fantastic and while the vibe was surely different than an independent store, I learned so much about music, and like you said, we could open any merchandise and play it for customers / or for ourselves as staff. It was a simpler, slower paced, more enjoyable time in the world.

You must be *DREAMING.* "...best songs ever written." You are OUT OF YOUR MIND if you were actually being serious about that. You were joking. You had to have been. Haha! Funny Joke! I'm just going to call it a "joke" and carry on. Hah! Good one!👍🏼
