This song is stunning. It grabs you from the first note. You can’t imagine the isolation of being gay in the early 80s. Tears for Fears were a terrific band. Pale Shelter was a terrific single.

Just discovered you through the manics videos. Smiths, Manics and Pink Floyd are my joint favourite bands. Looks like there are plenty of smiths coming up. A manics song I can recommend which I’m sure you will get to is Motorcycle Emptiness. As a big Suede fan also I would recommend We Are The Pigs.

Listening to this, back in the 80s !!!!! Just this sort of elevation experience. After the line "Then you go and you stay on your own...", Marcos seemed surprised.

I remember the first time I heard the Smiths on the radio the first time I saw them on TV and was immediately grabbed by them. The landscape Morrissey paints with his lyrics is stunning then and now he saw reality not Disney land absolutely brilliant

If you’re a fan of great lyrics, you’ve hit a gold mine with the Smiths. Morrissey wrote all the lyrics and is widely known as one of the best of all time. I recommend ‘The Hand that rocks the cradle’ and ‘Reel around the fountain’ these are both earlier songs

@@EwokToRemember I know you get loads of requests so here's some others, Billy Bragg Waiting for the great leap forward, The Saturday Boy and A Lover Sings. He is English, was big at the same time as The Smiths and regarded as one of the best lyricists of the time., though just like Morrisey his voice is rather unique.

The opening to this track gives me goosepimples. It's like all the grime and dying industry of Manchester distilled into music (dying at the time I mean)

Thats exactly what it is. Its THE anthem for greater manchester imo and sets the tone for the place .

You wanted to say "homonyms"... and you were correct. PS. Johnny Marr said he was impersonating Bo Didley when he created this riff. Also, this song did have a huge influence on a lot of later bands, like the 90s shoe gaze bands you mention.

Wasn't my favourite when it was released (yes, I'm old) but it surely has grown on me. Now I think that every film ever made would be slightly better if this song was in it.

If you like the smiths so far I would also recommend Morrissey's solo work. I recommend the songs Suedehead or Everyday is Like Sunday to start with.

Tears for Fears didn’t have nearly the impact that the Smiths did (talking as someone who had their teenage years in the 80s - and who fell in love with a guy who I thought was beautiful, and I saw him once dancing with flowers in his back pocket - mimicking Morrisey ☺️). Tears for Fears have maybe two really great tracks, but it seems like every Smiths track resonated with me - even, as you say, if it was just a nugget of gold, or truth (the same thing, surely?). I happen to get a bit irritated by their long outros, but that’s probably made up for, not just by Morrissey’s superb lyrics, but the often surprising end chord, so I rarely skip these bits, although I kinda want to! Apparently, and backed up by people I know who’ve met him, Morrissey was a bit of a dick, but maybe because he allowed himself to get engrossed in the negative feelings and mindset we all do, sometimes). But the Smiths were perfect for a low self-esteem 14 year old girl, and I love them, as a 53 year old woman (and practicing psychotherapist and philosopher) just as much as I ever did! Please listen to Morrissey’s solo stuff - in particular “The Last of the International Playboys”. I know there are some British references you might not get, but go for it anyway! xx

yeah I was aghast at the reference to Tears for Fears! I also grew up in the 80's so I like you know that Tears For Fears were one hit wonders and quickly forgotten. I think if it wasn't for the film Donnie Darko including one (and there were only two!) of their songs on the soundtrack, neither great, they would have remained forgotten. Tears for Fears had no impact.
@oscillatewildly65534 жыл бұрын
Jeeze! because a few people you know who met him called him a dick you say he "allowed himself to get engrossed in negative feelings" how would you know what he is engrossed in? How would you know his mindset? Just because he is able to convey in song or in discussion some things in life that bother or anger him doesn't mean he is engrossed in negative feelings. If a journalist brings up a topic that they know he feels angry and outraged over (such as animal slaughter) his response would be to share is feelings of anger and this is a fair and reasonable response to have if you care deeply about animal rights) it doesn't make him a negative person, some people just don't want to hear about horrible stuff because it doesn't suit them, you can't then label someone as negative, forgetting all the beautiful and inspiring things he's said or written. From what I've witnessed on occassion where Morrissey has met someone, he feels uncomfortable when they proclaim how much they love him and the gushing compliments for him is awkward, so he sometimes responds awkwardly and uses his dry sense of humour. You might not know that people ambush him when out in public, at restaurant's and airports, some even camp out at the end of his driveway. This has gone on for most of his career. I know from my personal experience at two shows where I was close enough to receive a handshake how kind and appreciative he is of his fans, he paused and looked into my eyes and gave a nod. He also tried at one show to shake my hand (like he does with everyone in the first row) each time he stretched out his arm to me and waited to see if I could reach him. He isn't a dick and he loves his fans but so many people just invade his personal space without thinking and are pushy and desperate (hard not to get excited and desperate if you were to see him in public!) Remember this is a man who for his entire career has employed his own security for the sole reason that he does not want his fans to be roughed up when the jump on stage to touch him. He is older now and the stage invaders can be very physical so it has to be managed but despite the madness of it he still makes an effort to shake hands. I was also a 14 year old girl with low self esteem, I'm now 45 and not much has changed but I can still rely on Morrissey to lift me up. You should know that there could be reasons that Morrissey may have come off as a dick, maybe these people you know were being dicks, maybe unintentionally. As a practicing psychotherapist you should know that humans are complex creatures and Morrissey is definitely complex which is why we love him. I'm glad you still love him, I kmow many people who have met him and he has politely signed records. He recognizes his fans who follow tours.

@@gen-xennial3826 I think Tears for Fears are criminally underrated personally. Songs like The Working Hour, Famous Last Words and Watch Me Bleed are all songs that people who haven't went into their back catalogue would never find since they weren't singles but they're all some of my favourite tracks from them alongside your usual Shout, Mad World or of course Everybody Wants To Rule The World.
