«A window-ledge in a forgotten corner of the Wool Hall Studios showcases a peculiar stringed instrument from 1777, which Johnny instantly grabs -"Oh, let's see how this sounds"- and, by second run-through, he can play the oddly stringed lyre that has no sound hole. The strings are possibly horsehair, and there is a barely usable tuning bar, but the sound Johnny finds is mesmerizing, and the song "I won't share you" is alive. It is a fascinating moment when Johnny's inner ear leads the way to somewhere unknown -somewhere mistrusted by all until the final depth of thought strikes-. The technical term is "bling"». "Autobiography" by Morrissey (2013)

Considering the title and the fact it was released posthumously, it's hard to not view it as being about the end of the Smiths, but apparently the atmosphere was great during the sessions. Things didn't start to fall apart until a few months after.

After The Smiths, Johnny Marr worked with several artists before eventually starting a successful solo career. Five super-strong recommendations featuring Mr Marr: “Nothing But Flowers” with Talking Heads, “Slow Emotion Replay” with The The, “Being Boring” with The Pet Shop Boys, “Getting Away With It” with Electronic and his own “European Me”.

I absolutely love your reactions man and that you actually look at the lyrics! Definitely react to every track on Strangeways, I love this album to bits. I'm excited for when you finally get around to listening to Mozzers solo work, especially Bona Drag and Vauxhall And I - my two favourite Morrissey albums.

If you want to listen to something different (Morrissey/Smiths): Morrissey once did a duet with Siouxsie (Siouxsie & The Banshees): "Interlude", a really beautiful song...

Big Smiths fan here - the line "has the Perrier gone straight to my head?" was a tad bit confusing to me for years too. Probably ten+ years after first hearing it I realized that Morrissey is writing about getting tipsy on the champagne Perrier Jouët, not the sparkling mineral water Perrier. Love those moments when a much loved lyric just finally clicks in the mind. Great job with your reviews and especially the band that provided the soundtrack to my college days with words that were biblical to me at the time. *As noted in another comment check out the duo project, Electronic. It was a collaboration partnering Johnny Marr with Bernard Sumner from New Order. Their first single - Getting Away With It - features backup vocals by none other than one half of Pet Shop Boys, Neil Tennant. How could it possibly be bad?

People often get this lyric wrong - Marcos is on the right track. In case anyone hasn't caught on, it's not saying "I won't share you with someone else", it's "I won't share (can't accommodate) you *with* the drive and ambition..." etc It's strange that Johnny Marr seems to have been confused about the song, ever since Morrissey (or, in his terminology, "somebody") asked his opinion on the lyric.

This one has always puzzled me, though I like it. It seems like it should mean, "I won't share my dreams with you", but it's worded as, "I won't share you with my dreams", and for some reason I can't manage to convince myself that inversion is an accident.

The Smiths were heading in a slightly different direction with the Strangeways album. Not meaning that as any way a criticism. The Smiths were my favourite band then and they still are today. Johnny Marr went onto perform with many others, Pretenders, The The, and with Bernard Sumner of New Order as Electronic. His talent and versatility shines through. Check out his harmonica playing! If you want to look at Marr and Morrissey post Smiths then obviously you must start with Morrissey's Viva Hate. A fantastic album, you will love his lyricism on every song on it. If Johnny had been involved on Viva Hate it would have been one of the greatest albums of all time. Conversely, I would suggest you listen to Marr's newest work first. Call the Comet is a superb album. Also, check JM's live performance from recent times. His versions of Smiths' songs are pure quality. His vocals really do fit well the Smiths tracks he chooses to play. You could listen to There Is A Light That Never Goes Out all day, every day.

Interesting take about Moz not wanting to share the fame or spotlight. He is elusive and opaque about song meanings. As with most great artists there are layers and can be interpreted multiple ways

Personally, I can't listen to Morrissey any more after he turned into a far right-wing idiot. I feel bad for Johnny Marr who is a cool guy, but Morrissey has gone off the deep end recently. Does raise the legitimate question of whether you can separate at from artist?
@ravenknight1704
@ravenknight1704 4 жыл бұрын
So much of what Morrissey has said of late has been dodgy for sure. However, to brand him as "far-right", I feel, is a bit of a stretch and it overlooks everything else he believes. People who say this overlook many things. They overlook that Morrissey has endorsed Bernie Sanders, Hilary Clinton and Jeremy Corbyn. They also overlook the fact that Morrissey is pro-trans, pro-black lives matter, pro-LGBTQ anti-monarchy, feminist, has been vocal about police brutality for years and is so anti-Trump that he was investigated by the American Secret Service. To reiterate, I disagree vehemently with many of Morrissey's opinions and the way he chooses to convey them. The fact that he approaches things from a pro-animal rights, pro-LGBTQ, feminist angle does not excuse his bigotry and ignorance. He seems to have swallowed a lot of right-wing propaganda, and this from someone usually so intelligent is extremely disappointing but the label far-right does not entirely fit and it isn't often helpful in trying to understand someone's point of view. Sorry for the long post. Have a good day.

@@ravenknight1704 nice to get a reasoned response, thank you. You make some valid points. I had no issue with his animal rights stance or his veganism, it was his anti-muslim rhetoric, along with his continued support of For Britain, which is a far-right organisation, that tipped him over the edge of acceptability for me
@ravenknight1704
@ravenknight1704 4 жыл бұрын
@@lawrencegillies Yes, he has been taken in by the anti-Muslim rhetoric voiced by parties like For Britain that say Muslims pose a threat to LGBTQ rights and animal welfare. It's really saddening and beneath any reasonable person. Anne-Marie Waters, the leader of said party is of course a lesbian, very pro-animal rights and used to be left-wing. I believe it is this which attracted Morrissey to the party. I hope he wakes up from the propaganda soon.

Anyone with enough basic mental competence to understand how self-expression works* and the limited extent to which communication** actually exists, can "separate the art from the artist". Anyone who CAN'T separate the art from the artist is a danger to the human race - when a mentally sub-competent person seeks to exert the tyrrany of censorship (the "psychological terrorism" of feigned ownership of another person's self-expression), it is necessary that they be hunted down and exterminated. (* e.g there are such things as hyperbole - and cognitive dissonance!) (** it doesn't, in reality. When "I" am saying anything, "you" don't know what "I" mean, because "you" are not "me" - so how the fuck dare "you" attempt to impose any boundaries on "me"?!)
