I absolutely love this. The smiths are perfect for a particular mood - angst, but not angry, just wistfully sad and hurt. Along with a bunch of 80s and 90s alt rock bands, they define my music taste

This was originally the b-side to Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now, which I love, but it's not the Masterpiece How Soon is Now is. When the record company realized what a fuck up they had made, they released How Soon is Now as a single in 1985, but I think it only got to 20 Something, because they had already released it. They should have released it first, then Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now, and it would definitely hit the top 5 in the charts. A geniune Masterpiece. One of Noel Gallagher's favourite tracks.

Was there when this song came out. 92.7 WLIR-FM, broke out this band and many many others. The 80s. The music was fantastic. The alternative dance clubs, record stores and concert venues were all in synch. On the flip side, b-side, sad side, we were slowly drowning, from the rippling effects from such nuances as The Cold War, AIDS, the stock market plunge of October 1987. Enjoy the music. Commit it to a specific place and time. Memories will love you. Don't get comfortable. Message!

I am the son and the heir Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar I am the son and heir of nothing in particular You shut your mouth How can you say I go about things the wrong way? I am human and I need to be loved Just like everybody else does I am the son and the heir Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar I am the son and heir of nothing in particular You shut your mouth How can you say I go about things the wrong way? I am human and I need to be loved Just like everybody else does There's a club, if you'd like to go You could meet somebody who really loves you So you go and you stand on your own And you leave on your own And you go home and you cry and you want to die When you say "it's gonna happen now" When exactly do you mean? See I've already waited too long And all my hope is gone You shut your mouth How can you say I go about things the wrong way? I am human and I need to be loved Just like everybody else does

Is this the greatest song of all time? It's certainly one in the running. Bo Riddley riffs meets the 80s (but does it really fit into its time?) & psychedelic sounds that Jimi Hendrix would have been impressed by. It sounds as good now as it did 25 years ago & it will 25 years from now & the next 25 & the next 25....

The best song of the '80s. U2 had the nerve to steal Johnny Marrs brilliant Guitar parts for Bullet the blue sky. He should have been given a co write. While U2 are picking up Grammy's on Johnny Marr's creation, The Smiths are being hailed as one of the most influential band's ever. The Stone Roses, Oasis would'nt exist without The Smiths. Morrissey and Marr are up there with Lennon and McCartney, Jagger and Richards, Townsend, Ray Davies, David Bowie, Neil Young, Cook, Jones, Matlock, Lydon. Mick Jones and Joe Strummer.
