ive heard so much about this band, this is the first time actually listening to it. im a huge music nerd from classical to metal, i love all sorts of music but i can’t really explain what i’m feeling listening to this. For the first time i don’t know what am i feeling. when i listen to certain bands of artists or composers i exactly know what is going on. Chopin- great im feeling sadness greif confusion its filling the void, Death- so techincal yet melodic i have a deep connection the the music and how chaotic yet organised and inventive it is, its agressive but really calming in a way. type o negative, him- lust, love, darkness, gothic vampire vibes- i know exactly what i want feel. led zeppelin- 70s at its best. hawkwind, yes- absolute soul awakening releasing itself into the sky, happiness daydreaming. blah blah blah. but this is something completely out of my feeling’s comprehension. i’ve never heard anything like this before. I’m slowly falling in love with this confusion

When I first took a chance and bought this album in 1984; vinyl of course, I read a review about it in Rolling Stone. Put it on and the song Reel Around the Fountain was like the beginning of a new era in my life it was never the same. I grew up when I started listening to this record; the lyrics and music were very sobering.

I don't know about all the politics, but in 1984 I was 17/18 still in high school and I bought The Smiths on cassette. Liked it enough to buy a few more albums... It was about liking the music, I didn't get into anything else... All we had then was the music, not all of the image baggage and whatever's... Where I was groups like this and the cure, rem etc were a welcome change from the CRAP mainstream FM was pumping us with, so that's all I remember.

You are so right! Even the art work of this album was so perfect, there are so many things that I pick up on from that photo and it had a connection with all the tracks. I feel so blessed to have grown up listening to this debut album and discovering who the band members were. I remember being captivated by so many things when I got this album home and listened to it on my sister's really cool headphones.........I was catatonic for the rest of the evening as I took in Marrs guitar, Morrissey's voice and his sublime lyrics telling more than a story, with wit, humour sarcasm and honesty. It was like I had found a nugget of gold and I was chuffed to bits for months.

Honestly all of The Smiths albums deserved a Grammy, they're all amazing and beautiful masterpieces and I really think that their music was very underestimated because sadly the artists are no longer awarded for their talent but for the charts. The Smiths may never win a Grammy but that doesn't really matter because they had something that many of the artists who have won a Grammy do not have: A REAL TALENT.

I remember listening to this album for the first time as a teenager and being pulled in by the yearning in the lyrics and Johnny's beautiful playing. Gradually got into other artists and veered off The Smiths- but they'll always pull you back in. I feel like in 20-30 years I'll appreciate them even more. I hope so anyway.

The arrangements on this album and the vocals are what makes this a masterpiece. The The guitars on this , well I dont have to tell you about this . Not since page has there been such string sorcery found in Marrs , ok it's a big difference but this statement applies to my own preference. Yes this album has always been one of my favorite Smith's albums , it's a masterpiece made up of many masterpieces. The Hendley track still gives me chills , the most haunting combination of vocal and guitar I've ever heard.

Also the good thing about Jonny Marr is that his guitar work isn't attention hogging and wanky. No explicit solos just an equal mastery of lyrics and chords. Just beautiful stuff.

25:29 Still Ill is the centerpiece of this album, to my ears. This Charming Man is amazing, but Still Ill has a certain bleakness to it set atop that wonderfully meandering guitar. Ah, and when it all comes together for the chorus "...oh, am I still ill?" Love it.

Depremidos!

I can remember myself and my friend Graham Hill being fascinated by this band in 1984 at 12 years old, we played 'Suffer Little Children' over and over as it was a B side to 'Heaven Knows....'. Other kids were listening to Electro (whatever that is), it was our shared private pleasure.
