there's so many moments in the Smiths collection that prove why Rourke and Joyce were The Smiths every bit as much as Moz & Marr, as a band. The drums on Last Night I Dreamt and The Queen Is Dead, the bass on Barbarism and How Soon Is Now, the GROOVE of This Charming Man together (when the 12" mix breaks down to bass and drums you realise that Motown groove is as integral as the jangly guitar and vocals). I think what really hurt Mike and Andy, aside from the money, was the message: you're just hired hands, anyone could have done your job, you are not The Smiths. It's just not true. It's like telling Ringo he wasn't a Beatle because 99% of the time he didn't write the songs. Four people, four incredibly talented musicians, made that SOUND, that Smiths sound. For Morrissey and Marr to deny that, after five years of what they thought was brotherhood in a band, and to trivialise their contribution, was a shocking betrayal.

Yup, that's pretty much correct and the replacement bass player proved it, they needed Rourke back ASAP. Some of his bass lines make the songs for me and as for the drums well, I can spot a sessions man immediately and Joyce wasn't one. Greed that's all it was.

There are literally endless examples of drummers in changing line up of bands. You cant tell when its happening most times or whether the new drummer is officially part of the band in a legal sense or not by the sound of their playing.

I was hired by Rough Trade to drive three of their people up to Manchester on July 6th 1983, when they signed the controversial deal discussed at 15.30. It was following a gig at the Hacienda, and I remember having to wait a good 2+ hours after the gig before things were settled and we could return to London. I think I got home at around 6am.

He seems like a very bitter person. I know he has every reason to be but the huge contrast between him and Mike in this documentary makes it seem like he feels he was somehow entitled to more than he was offered in the courts despite the fact he never once contributed to the writing of any songs and allegedly turned down the opportunity to be classed as an official member of the group which would have made the court case a lot easier to win.

He wrote all his own basslines without any pay. You're right, he has every reason to be better. He entered the group under an agreement that it was more or less Morrissey and Marr's band. Evidently he was willing to get walked over financially, but that seemed to be the deal he had to make to be in the Smiths, and we're all better off he did. I'll say it again: Morrissey was the worst part of the Smiths.

The brilliance of Marr and Morrissey- priceless evolution of songwriting and new style of music- I listened to them in college, a DJ friend of mine played them on his radio station!!! I loved them!!! To this day I still do- one of my favorites songs was "Last Night I dreamt somebody loved me" the orchestration for that tune were amazing!! Also "I Started Something"- loved everything off of strange ways here we come !

@@hux2000 The documentary was made in 2002 per the credits at the end. But some of the footage was probably recorded even earlier. So a documentary that is 19 years old (today) is talking about something that happened twenty years before its own timeline. 39 years. That is like adults talking about "before the war" when I was a kid in the 70s. But 1983-85 doesn't seem very far away if I close my eyes and think about it.

His move on Morrisey's sister's property is an unfortunate move he needed to make to force Steven's hand on the money owed him. The High Court ruled on it, and you heard the words the Judge used. You could say Moz is just as cupable for not paying what the Court demanded, so he sought to attach property that Morrissey probably bought for her. i would do the same...if she is sooooo dear to Moz, he can pay up, or buy sis a new house, period.Morrissey was on the stand for 4+ hours. Had he been in the right, would he not be able to convey that in such a long testimony, or did his arrogance give him an entitled aire about him that disgusted the Judge...i don't know, and neither do you, but a longtime Judge had plenty of time to hear everyone, and of everyone present, Moz was the one he delivered the stern message to. Didn't hear anything about any words he had for Johnny.

The Police did the same thing. They hit their peak with Synchronicity in 1984 and they broke up. They got back together for a reunion tour in the late 2000’s but never made another album. Sting and Copeland were always at each others throat and Sting of course wanted to go out on his own.

For any 'sensitive', 'queer', or person outside the suffocating 80s social mainstream, The Smiths were THE band, and for me, an educational primer on desire, integrity and artistic freedom. I remember the first video I saw of theirs was The Boy With The Thorn In His Side. I was mesmerized by their unexpected good looks and the sweet melancholy of the melody. I was instantly obsessed. Then I found others in high school equally obsessed, and I knew we would be friends. Watching this documentary, my heart still breaks that the smiths split and that at the end there was so much spite and acrimony between them. It shatters that special image and world that the smiths represented. The band would be nothing without Morrissey and Marr, but it wouldn't have been what it was without Joyce and Rourke. As much Morrissey will be the man who spoke most to my inner life, I can see how he could be a total shit and a self important narcissist. But for 5 years, the music of the smiths, the album artwork, lyrics, images, style, queerness, and intelligence was THE soundtrack of my life. Their music will stand the test of time.

The original agreement between the band members was 40% Morrissey, 40% Marr, 10% Rourke, 10% Joyce. He shared them as was the agreement. Morrissey and Marr wrote all the songs in their entirety, which was a much bigger workload than Joyce or Rourke had, hence the split.

The dispute wasn't about royalties of which Mozzer and Marr rightly got all the money, it was about performing rights. Rourke and Joyce weren't sessions musicians they were part of The Smiths and as such toured and performed the numbers just like Mozzer and Marr did. The workload regarding touring and performing was equal and as such should have been split four ways. Like I said amazing what money and greed does to so called friendships. It doesn't surprise me in the least that Mozzer did that but it surprised me that Marr kicked his mates in the bollox !

I know that Morrissey and Marr said in the 96 court case that both Mike and Andy agreed at the outset to be given 10%. Until today I still don't understand why Mike sueded Morrissey and Marr if Mike agreed with everything since the band was formed. If he did not agree with this then why did he remain in the band? Why didn't he leave? I kinda feel it was unfair for Morrissey and Johnny, Mike always agreed with everything and in his time with the band he never complained about the agreement. Also i think Mike didn't deserved all of that money. I'm not saying that Mike hadn't worked as hard as Moz and Johnny, everyone contributed a hell of a lot but when it comes to write songs we all know that isn't something that everyone can do, so for obvious reasons Morrissey and Johnny deserved more than Andy and Mike. It is very sad how everything ended between them and although I would really love to see a reunion because The Smiths have been my favorite band since forever, I know very well that Morrissey will never accept, mainly because of what happened with Mike, not for his differences with Johnny.

I heard how soon is now.. I was listening to it on my headphones at a bar. An older guy was sitting next to me saw me take an earphone a out and asked me what I was listening to... The Smiths I replied. Ever heard of em? His face dropped. He laughed. I have everything The Smiths have ever done said the man.. What album you listening to? Idk I replied.. I only know of this one song. How soon is now.. I ended up smoking some trees with the man. Sitting in his car smoking he played different songs. Just amazing. The guy gave me 2 cds. I’m not really a big Smith’s guy not to say that I think they are bad. But with all I’ve heard about morrisey he sounds like a pretentious dick. Johnny Marr sounds like a much nicer guy.

@@walkermorgan1710 you need to read morriseys autobiography. ...alot of people are not smart enough to realise what morrisey is about....it was marr that pulled the sneaky moves and rough trade ....johnny was signing stuff with rough trade in secret ......morrisey got stung from it all and was caught up in it ....the way morrissey comes across didn't help his case ....the judge must have not liked morrisey that's all I'm saying ....

I dunno, there's a lot of one offs sentences or conversations but that's about it. The fact that Mike and Andy make an appearance, means that this documentary is a must watch. I enjoyed watching it. Oh and the cartoon segments are lovely. The artstyle and animation reminds me of the early 2000's cartoons.

Andy Hayes Funny thing theres a lot more hatred on some of these pages than any singer could show or display. These are people that fall out forever reason, there's always more behind closed doors & events that nobody will ever know about. Then the nobodys have their version that they seen here or read somewhere. There's somebody a little too interested about Morrissey's sex life around this production, like if he is such & such it's a bad thing because it's Morrissey... His music, his band & his army is what he lives, no matter the opinions...As for being called a bastard, that needs personal experience... What has he done on you, except breathe apparently...

+emma Theresa yes, everyone is entitled to an opinion, it doesn't make the opinion correct. in 1987 as a sad lil 12 year old, in my head I fell out with johnny marr in my head for breaking up the smiths. this fall out in my head lasted err, a long time (altho my son is called johnny, hes near 20) then, I found out a bit more and for a few years I fell back in with johnny marr and out with Morrissey for a couple of years and have only just "forgiven Morrissey" (pardon the moz pun) after reading morrisseys autobiography I could very easily fall out with mike joyce in my head, with good reason too, but hey ho, life is too short for silly fall outs...and well, I didn't used to believe the reuinion was at all possible. I now believe in the reunion in my head, if other bands can put it all behind them then so can the smiths. yes its a ramble of mine but the smiths are very important to me and many others.so, my fallings in and out with these men I have never seen (apart from the front man) nor met are as ridiculous or as worthy as the opinions of others who were not there or part of the dealings between these people.

+john jay Morrissey is very important to me and that's what matters. Im glad other people like him too. and guess what, he loves his mother and is good to her, that is very important. Morrissey speaks his mind, sometimes he does just like to be controversial for the sake of controversy but there are many times when he is very very brave with his words for a man in his position.

I think there is a need to recognise that the Smiths have done more for music today than most, if not all, of the bands you listed. I would say that they have a greater resonance today than all of those groups.

Yes it really did. I have been all excited about buying a Johhny Marr Jaguar, I was thinking that he really cares about the customer and the quality of the guitar, but now I'm not so sure.

@@laussethecat Your right, I stand corrected, the responsibility should be shifted to fender, and this is my complaint about any guitar manufacturer that produces a less than economical guitar, knowing there functional problems with the guitar, yet put it on the market any way, I'm mostly familiar with Fender and Gibson and both are guilty of this sin. I'm reading alot about PRS's, it seems they produce a line of guitar for less than $1500, the S 2, in which the problems have been worked out before putting it on the market, it seems they put more care into the product they produce, I think this will be my next guitar.
