Love these guys, every new tank I start I use these guys to cycle, feed the tank for 2 to 3 months before I even think about planting...they will turn what ever substrate you use into planting media....I got a few systems I've been running them in for almost 10 years, they definitely get bigger

I've had them in both my tanks for years. Never known them to be a problem. They do reproduce frequently, but they've never taken over my tank and I enjoy watching them attach themselves to the sides of the tank. They are ALWAYS welcome in my tanks!

I received one MTS as a hitchhiker on a plant I bought from my local pet store. Removed it and placed it into its own little half galf mini tank for a year until I decided to put it into my 10gal when my betta died. I now have probably 100 of them and the big mama snail is still alive after 2 years (average life span is ~18 months according to Google)

I had always wanted them because they are actually a pretty snail. But had trouble getting any because they are invasive, the guy at the aquarium store told me, so he wouldn’t sell me any of his! So! I went to our lake here and actually got some while collecting some plants! Mine get to an inch long! They do uproot my plants though, no big deal, at least they don’t eat healthy plants like some other snails. And they have been keeping my population of ramshorn snails down. Didn’t know they did that. I like them a lot!

I have planted a aquarium that I was so worried that I messed up by adding a few to it today. Now I just added them to all my planted aquariums because of this video. I bought them as feeders and they sent me 100 and was supposed to send 50. I cant complain about that though. I gave most to my LFS because they didn't work as feeders for me but I kept like 20 and im glad I did now. I just added more. Thank you For some reason they are coming out in the day time though. Maybe I wasn't feeding enough.

As a side note, i had a lot of trumpet snails. Put 10 Anatome helena in my aquarium. After 1.5 year I have about 150. Asside from eating nuissance snails they also clean up dead matter and fish rather efficiëntly (esp when there are no snails to hunt). Most of the smaller ones will burrow in the substrate. So maybe if you're tired of the trumpet snails these guys can be en interesting alternative?

@HarrisonCountyStudio
@HarrisonCountyStudio 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting question. I always look at the bio load as total weight/volume of organisms, not number of organisms. I would guess the total weight of the snails in his tank would equal one small feeder gold fish. Planted tanks seem to be able to hold water good quality for longer periods of time. As an aside, I find sponge filters to be the best at biological filtration, especially for the money. In a tank that has an uptick in waste, nitrifying bacteria grow quickly in the sponge.

Higher kH = higher pH. If snails don’t have enough minerals (especially calcium) in their water, they can’t make more shell and can die. Just add some cuttlebone, powdered egg shell, or crushed oyster shell to help. Please research for more specifics considering your water parameters.

@amarabidali5316
@amarabidali5316 3 жыл бұрын
Stop feeding so much food then, fish can live for weeks without food if your tank has algae growing in it, your loaches aren't gonna eat a snail if you're giving them tastier food, if you cut down on the food (try a small pinch every other day) then the snails wont have as much to eat to reproduce and the loaches will likely start eating the snails. The amount of snails you have depend on the amount you feed, know that they are eating all the leftover food that your fish don't eat, if they didn't eat it to further break it down that food would just rot and foul your water. Also careful with loaches, if they get too big they will start ripping your fish in half if they are small enough.

I just don't want to have those snails sticking out of the bottom and the risk of smaller plants getting unrooted. I just regularly clean the bottom. Do they ever get out of control?
@johnterpack3940
@johnterpack3940 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. We had an explosion in a 20g once. Don't believe the BS about "only if you overfeed". First of all, unless you hand-feed your fish there is always going to be some food they miss. So it isn't just a question of "overfeeding". Secondly, they also eat fish waste just like most snails. So even if you do hand-feed your fish there will be plenty of food for the MTS. Thirdly, and he briefly mentioned this in the video, they eat dead plants. If you have a heavily planted tank you have plenty of dead/dying leaves for them to eat. The tank in the video probably will never have a problem because it only has a couple plants and very few fish. Our 20g was a densely planted "jungle". It got so overpopulated with MTS that they basically became the substrate. They didn't disappear during the day because there wasn't enough room for them all to burrow. They just writhed around like maggots on a corpse. They are great at what they do. But unless you are meticulous about removing dead plant matter they will find plenty of food to thrive on. I would keep them again now that we have pea puffers. None of the loaches we tried ate the MTS.

I'm sorry but I hate all (pest) snails. I know that's my opinion but I'm answering because this is what the video is about. I had pest Ramshorn snails hitch a ride on plants I bought once. Reducing feeding is what everyone says. I took the fish out and COMPLETELY stopped feeding for a month. My plants were not decaying. And they STILL reproduced! So, I think the reducing feeding is BS. Now I can definitely see them exploding to hundreds with plenty of food but these things are hardy and will live through not feeding them. I have switched to tissue culture plants and enjoy my heavily planted snail free aquarium lol. Thanks.

Someone recommended MTS snails back when I had a planted tank for a tiny bit of algae I had under the substrate that the shiny ramshorns couldn't get to. At first I thought they were great. Then they reproduced so fast that the entire tank was covered. They ate everything in site including all my plants and they messed up the water so bad I had to do water changes every day. The fish started dying. I was pulling hundreds out every week. It was a disaster. My tank was a thing of beauty before that. It was basically self sustaining. I wanted to cry. Never again. I am looking at setting up another tank some 10 years later and I'm trying to find out where to get the tiny shiny ramshorn snails that I loved and all these trumpet snail things keep popping up. ugh
