I am a retired optometrist and one thing I used to tell all my patients who use eye makeup: it belongs on the OUTSIDE of the eye, not INSIDE! The area between your lash line and the ocular surface is actually INSIDE the eye. Most of the everyday moisture in our eyes comes from glands that line the inside of both upper and lower lids; these are the meibomian glands and their ducts line the edges of the lids. Putting eyeliner on this area is asking for trouble, because it can clog and stop the moisture flow into the eye. If you could see your own eyelids under high magnification like eye doctors do, you would never even think of putting eye makeup there. The ducts can clog, the moisture trying to get out of the glands carries the makeup into the tear film, where it can become embedded on the inside surfaces of the lids. The inflammatory response to this is poor eye lubrication, causing redness and dry eye irritation and pain. Over time, the damage to the glands is irreversible. Two rules: (1) keep your makeup on the outside of the eyes, and (2) thoroughly clean all eye makeup every night. I will add one more, that if you are not going out, don't wear your eye makeup at all that day. Give your eyelids a complete break that day.

@bethsutton5063 Жыл бұрын
As someone who had clogged meibomian glands so bad that some of my glands actually died off, I caution women about applying any kind of product to their "waterlines" (a beauty term and not an optician term). In my case, mine were so badly clogged, that I had to have a treatment to express them (to the tune of $950 out of pocket as my insurance didn't cover the procedure) and I am on lifetime Rx eye drops for dry eye that cost $600/mo. These glands are very delicate, hard to clean, and produce a crucial portion of the tears that bathe the cornea and keep it from drying out. It's also important to note that once the individual glands die off, they do not come back. Think long and hard, my friends.

THANK YOU! I am 65 and have pretty good skin, thanks to my mom's great genes. I have taken care of my skin forever and then I tried this effect and stopped to read your comment and decided not to go there again. If the make-up doesn't clog those pores, it's a great trick. However, I think I will stear clear of it.
@laurastanley7358 Жыл бұрын
Also, the membranes of your "waterline" are extremely delicate and porous. They will absorb whatever chemicals are in your eye makeup into your body. Make sure that you vet the ingredients in your cosmetics. Since cosmetics are not food products, the FDA has little - if any- regulatory oversight over make-up products even though the chemicals will be directly absorbed into our bodies transdermally.

I would occasionally (couple times a year I rarely wear makeup) put eyeliner on my upper waterline and will admit it really does give a good effect. A few years ago my eyes started watering so badly I looked like I was crying all the time. My eye doctor prescribed drops and steaming my eyes every night. It’s a pain in the butt to have to make sure I’m always carrying drops and take eight minutes with a (hot as you can stand according to the doc) hand towel over my eyes.

Using products on your inner lid margins is not a good idea, it blocks the little openings of the meibomium glands and results in blockages which lead to chalazia (styles) and blepharitis, also upsetting the balance of your tear film. Good lid hygiene is really important to prevent the symptoms of dry eye disease. Keeping those little openings clear is vital, it’s best not to gum them up with product.

It doesn't matter how much make-up you put on your skin if the "canvas" isn't prepared. I believe the first thing women need is an excellent skin care treatment, If we don't have that we look "made-up". After the skin is prepared, primer is essential. If you don't believe it, I always recommend doing one side with primer and one side without - the difference is dramatic. :)

As a 73-year-old woman who has developed dry eyes, I think it's a very bad idea to tight line eyelashes. I've seen videos where eye doctors find eye make up embedded in the inside upper lid on women who are having eye problems from years of wearing eye makeup. We don't really think about these things until we start to have some eye pain and realize beauty means nothing if your eyes aren't healthy. Apparently our eyes can only take so much make up over our lifetimes. I'm just saying: be careful. The glands in your eyelids can get clogged and actually die. You can't get new glands, so be careful about contacts and makeup when you're young! I wear minimal eye makeup now. Hate to rain on anyone's parade, but take care of your eyes!

I agree to a certain extent, but where you see severe cases of eyelash follicle infection, is where they haven't cleansed the eyeliner or mascara off properly. To really get in there, you have to use a cotton bud, with eye make-up remover and ensure there is not trace of make-up there in between the eyelashes, then, put on an eyelash serum or castor oil (with a cotton bud).

When I was in my younger years, I would say up until I turned 40, I colored in my upper and lower waterlines -- but when I drew closer to my 50s, I began having problems with my eyes, and dry eye syndrome. I would feel like I had sand or grit under my eyelids and my eyes would burn all day long and have redness. I hadn't changed to use a new product line and had been using the same manufacturer of eyeliner my whole life. So I changed eyeliner manufacturers but still experienced the burning, redness, and feeling like I had sand or grit under my eyelids all throughout the day. So, I just stopped using any eyeliner on the insides of my waterlines -- and as soon as I stopped the health of my eyes improved and I didn't feel the burning and the grit under my eyelids anymore! When it comes to choosing your health over vanity, you should always choose your health! I still use eyeliner but only on the outside of my lashes. If my eyes don't look as "dramatic" anymore, oh well, I'll just live with it !! I'd rather have healthy eyes and keep my vision for as long as I possibly can! .

Having been ill for almost a year the doctors have finally come up with a treatment and I am feeling more like my old self. I haven't put on make up for so long that I feel as if I am starting over. I stumbled across your channel and I am pleased to see a woman who isn't 30, although you look marvelous my dear, showing us makeup tricks for older women. You gave me some great tips and I feel like I can put makeup on and not feel like I'm caking it on. I took your advice, paused you, got up and looked in the mirror and the skin below my lash line is very light and shows all along the upper eyelid. No wonder my adding eyeliner always looked incomplete or badly applied. I have all this white skin below my lashes that made it look out of place. I read one of the comments below about not putting makeup there for fear of causing chalazia (styes) and blepharitis but it doesn't concern me. Blepharitis is from having too much bacteria in and around your lashes and I use a cotton ball and warm water and a touch of baby shampoo on the cotton ball and shampoo my eyelashes a few times a week. Then use my face cloth to rinse and remove the baby shampoo. I've had styes occasionally over the years as a result of having to wear make-up every day for work and I was frustrated because I had a stye form right before a very important engagement and I got angry and took care of it my way and I discovered a very quick fix if a brief pain doesn't bother you that I will not recommend because it horrifies my doctor and is not doctor approved. Now the question is do I apply eyeliner all along the eye since my skin is visible all along the lash line or just from the middle to the end point?

This is the most attractive, natural makeup application I have ever seen for either more mature OR younger women. There is just enough color to bright up your face...no overdone smoky eye or false eyelashes the size of dead tarantulas, and my biggest gripe: shiny finishes that truly make actresses on the red carpet look like they have really oily skin or have vaseline on. That is not "dewy" it's just plain greasy. This is great makeup...pretty, enhancing, fresh and lovely. Applause !

She's telling people to coat the ducts for the meibomian gland ducts and risk serious infections and gland malfunction. Those ducts provide moisture to the eye. If people wear makeup inside of their eye - which is what she's telling them to do - the damage could permanently damage the meibomian gland and/or ducts. If you were a nurse, you'd know that.

Hi, yes, I have known about this trick. It looks amazing but I’ve found it irritating and also exacerbates formation of stys for me. I’ll use it for special occasions only. So here’s MY trick for that fleshy color showing under the lashes - for a really natural look use less eye darkening eye products and instead disguise flesh and pinkness around the eyes (both above and below the lash line) with a soft blush. It’s kind of like if you can’t beat it - join it. Ha ha. I’m serious though, if you use less contrasting color and just continue the flesh tone up above the eyelid it will overshadow the weird under lash effect. Not for people who want a lot of eye drama though. Instead, it produces a soft, pleasant appearance to aging eyes.

The tip with the concealer sitting for a few on the face is a great tip, and I will try that. I have dark circles, and I put extra moisture on my under eye, wait and let it dry a bit, then apply concealer. Thank you, and I love the eye shadow liner. Very pretty and on pale skin, such as mine, it stands out. I'm going to try Cabana and Sweet Carol and see how it looks. Thanks, Nikol, for all you do for all ladies! 🩷

At 82, I still love wearing my makeup whenever I leave the house. Even at home, I will use my concealer, blush and eyeliner. However, you taught me something in this video that I never knew! Eye Shadow only in the corner or my eyes and not the whole eyelid! And, using my eyeliner pencil only on the top innermost part of my eyelashes! I hope I'm describing it right. But, what a great revelation! And, mascara? I've been hesitant to use too much on my lashes so it ends up clumped and I end up having to brush it off. I am a 17 year cancer survivor and the chemo took not only the hair on my head but, all over - including my eyebrows. I did the stupid thing of having them tattooed 7 years ago but are now faded. I do not want to renew the tattoo, and wondered if you have a remedy for drawing in (filling in) what little eyebrows I have?

Your video came up in the side menu while I was watching other videos and I came back to view it. As a former make-up artist for a large company, I learned and confirmed info from you here. At that time, I was doing makeup on older women and I found that since their eyelids were more crepey and loose, I had to stretch the lid with my finger in order to line the eye without skipping. You provided a great hack that I had started to use on myself, instinctively, however; I'm stuck on the waterproof liquid liner and a longer cat eye. I've been in the habit of using a shadow in the crease for depth but I like how this looks on you so I'll try it on myself. I'm now a follower. Thank you, Nikol.

I use an angled eyeliner brush, and waterproof eyeliner, either brown or black. And I take the tiniest bit, since a little goes a long way.. dab the excess off on my hand. Then I gently and slowly dab it on my lash roots, and make sure I wipe off any that may get on my tight line. I have a transfer issue as well since I have oily eyelids. Takes some practice, but it gives a very natural look, whilst filling in that flesh tone that peeks thru, especially with eyeliner above the lashes.
