I have been most impressed by the South Africans response, the fans, in defeat. This Ireland side are good, South Africa are worthy champions, and for quite everyone to be just discussing the fine margins is encouraging. Rugby is a tough game, all the fans, Irish and South African appreciate that, and yet all rugby supporters are united.

The biggest tactical difference in the move from the first to the second test is; first test it’s loaded with front row players and a lock in the line. Second test, Ireland run the same shape but take the forwards take the ball into contact which isolates SA players who were expecting that to be the move. You then run the move off the second phase against two SA props, but the attack is loaded with backs. Delaying the move one phase made the gap, and was obviously a planned thing to show SA the same starting picture then change it slightly

Spot on, the simplicity of this makes it work, but because the Irish forwards have the skills to pull it off too, they're a threat but give the defence a false sense of confidence. It's extremely clever that anyone is capable of pulling it off. - Jeremy

Good analysis.. thank you .. There was one winner of this test series and that was rugby 🏉.. that last drop sails right of the post and there wud have been 2 winners! … All top 5 teams have beaten each other by a point, and margins are slim .. but SA are still the best team in the world, and will remain so until they are beaten at the World Cup, in the knockout stages that is (Irish 🇮🇪 fan here 😅).. SA will learn from this defeat & come back stronger, so in my opinion still favs for a Threepeat - they just kno how to win the important games lol

It's a fair point, but I think it's a solid legal move. As long as he doesn't prevent the tackler from a genuine effort at the ball-carrier. The two decoys totally forced the defenders to commit to them. Great misdirection. - Jeremy

From my understanding the non-recieving player can’t initiate contact in front of the ball carrier. Otherwise, isn’t it obstruction. I’m also confused how it is legal as in both cases the decoy runner made contact with the defender close to where the reciever runs through the line.

@@loots0533 I think that is the case, but in both these scenarios (from my view), I see both defenders stepping into the decoy player path and both look unlikely that they'd even had make the tackle on the actual ball-carrier. I mean, if you can get a tackler to legitimately bite onto your decoy, it worked in my mind. In the PTA Test, Du Toit was NEVER going to get Kelleher, because he stood his ground anticipating the decoy. I guess some refs might call it, but it's a fine line between completely obstructing someone and forcing them to stand their ground. If Du Toit lunged for Kelleher and the Irish decoy took him out, that's another story. Good, clean move IMO. If it's executed wrong, there definitely would be obstruction. Thanks for the comment!

That double croc roll has resulted in a fractured tibia for Marx (out for 4+ weeks). Mostert is out for 6 weeks with a broken leg, PSdT is out for 4-6 weeks due to an injury sustained during that 2nd test, and Kolbe is out for 4+ weeks due to a lower leg injury. Not to mention all the blood - Etzebeth & Mostert. How do all those top Springbok players get injured if the play is not cynical & malicious? Yet the Boks get called out for being too physical! I was happy for Ireland's win until I read about these injuries today. It's disappointing and quite disgusting that such dangerous play is not severely penalised. Dirty play has no place in the game we love.

@@vivb5180 It's a valid concern on the particular ones in the 2nd Test, but I do think JUST because someone gets injured, it desn't mean that something illegal is being done. The last thing any rugby fan wants is for cards to be handed out JUST because someone got hurt. It's a contact game, rugby incidents happen. I do think the croc-roll didn't look good. - Jeremy

@@aqwerty-dm8lh Never said the injuries lost us the game. The cynical foul play was simply uncalled for. Beaten up by SA beasts for decades... really? Your players are heavier than our pack in the scrum. And Ireland players have never been scared of giving as hard as they get. In past decades (the Bakkies Botha & James Dalton era), the Boks did get a bad name, but since Erasmus has taken over the reigns, there is no place for cynical foul play. Nothing dirty about brute strength in the scrums (technique is everything as scrum coach Daan Human shows). The Ireland team is hardly made up of small, lightweight players and neither are the schoolboys or U20 players. And it wasn't just one bad tackle (made by TWO players who should both have been red-carded), but also the cynical play on Mostert who ended up with a broken leg. Last I checked, no players in the Ireland team had any broken bones after both tests.

Most likely tied up elsewhere. Like all plays, you need to pick your spot. You can't just go spamming it like a toddler who learnt the F word. So what do you do? I haven't watched the game back to analyse the buildup, but here is an idea of how a coach might think: In the previous phases, you make sure to spread the defense as wide as possible by probing the wings, sending the message that you're going wide and break for the corners. You can drop your fly-half back, that might send the message that the fullback now has to watch out for some nasty 50:22 kicks. In the phase that you are planning your move, you make sure to target the best tacklers and get them either roped in a tackle, or have them follow a dummy runner. PSDT can't do PSDT stuff when he is laying under half a ton of beef. What you end up with is a defensive line spread wide and a fullback that has to commit himself to a defensive position, preferably far away from where you are trying to launch your sneak attack.

Ah. This is where knowledge of the rules comes in handy when working out plays. The law clearly defines what obstruction is. Nowhere does it say that one player is not allowed to run behind another. And when the dummy comes, the lead player darts off to the side, pulling a defender away.

Did you guys saw at every scrum what the Irish no.1 (loosehead prop) did? Pul down the South African no.3 (tighthead prop) and not one penalty for the Bokke... Something definitely wrong with the referee's and TMO's. The 8 and 5 should have gotten yellow cards you can't use a dangerous tackle as mitigation for another dangerous tackle.

If you want to blame bad ref and TMO calls, then Ireland would have won the first test match as the TMO would not be allowed to come in and call that Irish roll in scrum as it would only be the main refs permit, not the TMO's. Therefore the disallowed try would have been made, not disallowed, and Ireland would have won. So please leave missed officials calls out of this. it went both ways. Good test matches, and enjoyable rugby for 2 games.
