This problem could be solved so easily. Gift card manufacturers could change the packaging to hide the information behind a tear off strip that the cashier removes before activation scan.

Walmart has that security feature on their gift cards. It isn't removed until the card is scanned. Also if your total is more than $500, you have to order online. There is a form you have to fill out and corporate reviews it. The process takes a little while.

I have a MC gift card in front of me and the edges are so tight there is no way you could separate it and glue it back together, and all of the edges are perforated intended to be torn to open it. So they obviously have tightened up the packaging to prevent the thieves from getting at the scratch-off codes.

Yup. Publix is on it. They keep their Visa gift cards at the customer service desk locked away to prevent people from tampering with them. And if there is any issue with the cards in general, they gladly give you a refund.

Bank of America always treated my debit card as a credit card. Years ago my debit card was compromised. They caught it, reversed the charges and sent me a new card.

First day of opening an account. They took 23 pictures in two days claiming 3rd ID maker processing, camera was having problems. Plus I never received my card. Yet to close my account would cost 53.00. I will never bank there .

What is sad is that retailers aren't addressing this because they don't lose any money when customers get scammed with these gift cards. They still get the money associated with the stolen gift card. They lock up laundry detergent and socks, but not gift cards. It doesn't impact their bottom line when the gift cards are stolen. But the $5 to $10 hit from a package of stolen socks or underwear, or the $20 jug of stolen laundry detergent does bother the retailer enough to lock it down. A customer getting scammed out of $500 doesn't upset the retailer one bit. It's still profitable to the retailer.

We were scammed for four gift cards last Christmas. They were VISA cards and Visa said "so sad, too bad." The gift cards we purchased from Target were also "used", but Target made good for the cost. Retailers will cover the loss. Credit card companies will not.

Walmart is extremely aware of these scams. We receive information internally about this issue. If the purchase on a GC exceeds $ 50.00 or several purchases,they must go to customer service. At my store,a" customer" was picking up cards, then would ask customers to buy it for $20.00. This Romanian was arrested outside the store putting $1.00 on the Walmart gift card, but the police checked the balance,it was 0. The company that services Walmart gift card blocked the transaction.

One time I was at the store and I saw a young woman pulling gift cards out of her the front pocket of her hoodie and putting them on the card rack. At first, I thought she was an employee but, she wasn’t dressed like other employees. Obviously, she wasn’t stealing, she was putting cards on the hooks not taking them off. I called the police and reported what I saw because it looked suspicious. Now, I understand the scheme. This happened just north of Los Angeles. So sad. Also, my son received a gift card for Nintendo and it was drained before he was able to use it 😢

Won’t work. Even when the gift cards are locked up, behind cash registers (checkouts), or secured behind customer service they are still getting hacked in Canada. It has gotten to the point where many businesses in Canada have banned the use of all gift cards. The end of 2023 and earlier 2024 was the worst for it. Myself and millions of others got targeted through either gift cards or Mastercards during that time period. I lost $600 but others lost all their wealth and more. 😢 It was the worst time ever for hacking and financial theft according to the fraud department.

@@Evetttte They are locked up in some places... Costco... The problem is if they are locked up, a manager or someone with keys will need to access them. That will slow down the line and cost more money for the store. The problem with that is the store is not out any money if there is gift card fraud. There are no refunds. The store does not accept the loss. The purchaser loses the money.

Doesn’t always work. Gift cards that are locked up tightly or are behind cash registers, or at customer service in certain stores in Ontario have been hacked. The fall of 2023 and the earlier year of 2024 hundreds of millions of people got hacked (including myself) across Canada . Some lost hundreds of thousands if they were rich if poor they just cleaned all their cards.

Great video content thank you. For the first time I actually discovered that Amazon has a downloadable gift card. So if you have a printer.. after the purchase you just print it out and you can put it inside of a Christmas card. I like that a little bit better than having a virtual gift card emailed to somebody, it's always a little more fun when you can put your fingers on something you can open for a gift.

Similar thing happened to me of 20 years. I was young and struggling; to make matters worse I got so sick (I ended up needing a transplant) that I was unable to work. To help me out, my mom gave me a gift card she had won at her job, for a local supermarket. I used it to buy myself food, but when I went to the register, the gift card had no value. Knowing my mom would never intentionally give me a gift card that was worthless, I never had the heart to tell her what happened.

If you buy a giftcard in store, you should always make sure the scratch off part on the back is still on there. When you buy the card it comes with a receipt that has the serial number and dollar value of the card. Always give the receipt with the giftcard. The card has been purchased but not activated. The receipt has the serial number and dollar amount of the card. Everyone is protected that way.

Did all of that, but when the card was opened, (sealed and not tempered with and right in front of the sales person) they verified that the card numbers didn't match. But I still had to go through Apple to get my money back 😡🤬

Years ago this happened and what he mentioned in the video.They would scratch it off, get the pin number and put a new scratch off back on. Apparently you are/were able to buy them online.

I rarely buy gift cards, and always use a credit card and keep the receipt. That way if it was never activated, or misused by another, I can dispute it. Did exactly that procedure for a friend who was sending her grandson a gift card. She gave me cash, and I used my cc to purchase it.

I have never bought gift cards. I’d rather give money. It’s a shame that you have to think twice about using the internet, ATMs, credit card machines, gas pumps and even your info isn’t safe at hospitals. Electronic banking and record keeping is so safe, I’m afraid not. Can’t even answer your phone without screening your calls. I will not save my cards on Amazon, Walmart or other places to use later. Red flag: high dollar gift card at a specific retail store. I've worked at many places, small and global. The executives normally like money or bonuses, middle management unless bonuses are part of their comp may not get something like this. This seems like an inside job given the lack of growth major industries face to date.

So the main thing that they’re doing to the gift cards is, they’re opening them up either with a heat gun or something similar to get the envelope open. They take the card out and they cut off the number of card they leave the magstripe and then reseal the gift card and put it on the shelf. As soon as it’s loaded, they use that number and buy something online

I am so sick of all of these scams. Noting is safe. I got a gift card for buying tires. Registered it and within minutes it was drained. I have also had debit cards scammed by someone trying to charge a small amount. If you do not dispute they put through a bigger charge. Have had to change my debit card 3 times in the last 2 years and it is a pain.

I understand being able to steal gift cards off the display and then return and rehang them. I dont understand how thieves are able to open the packaging, access the PIN number after scraping off the substance that covers it, then make the packaging look undisturbed so that someone will purchase it. I do not buy gift cards that are bent, scraped, etc. I only buy the ones whose packaging is pristine.

I was given a Visa Vanilla gift card for $100, had it for almost a year before I used it. I activated it at 8pm, called for a takeout order, paid with the gift card which cleared. Thought all was good. Couple weeks later I checked the balance only to have $12 left, looked at the history and saw that at 4am the day I activated the card someone had charged $25 at some nail place. I don’t understand how that happens before the card was activated. But it showed the full $100 at 8pm the day I activated it. Weird. Tried to dispute it but the site said that feature wasn’t working. How convenient..

I was lucky, then. I bought a $50.00 Burlington gift card for a co-worker as part of Secret Santa and the money was there. Plus, I got a $25.00 Visa gift card for a co-worker's birthday and the money was there. The only downside is that Visa charged me a $4.95 fee for activating the card or whatever it was. I bought both at my local Rite Aid. None of the cards are behind the cash register.

I bought Target this year before I watched the video. The cashier had to put a sticker on the back that she had at the register. Now it can still be an inside job but I did feel safer than a normal off the rack card.
