A return to the "bucket mall" of Batavia, New York where the buckets collecting water outnumber the shoppers.

I think the mall is worth saving but I also think that somebody at City Hall wants to hang on to the money. Checking out the abandoned building was a great idea! 😁👍

It's criminal how these buildings are allowed to rot and with tenants still there and in public use.

I grew up here and in the 1980's and 1990's, the mall was really great back then. Arcade, jewelry store, music store, many clothing places, food and people walking around. Ok great is an overstatement but now it's just an empty shell of what I was in the 90's sad.

I grew up in Batavia (graduated BHS 6/69) but moved to Tucson Fall of '78 before this was built. I have gone back a few times over the years but the city has changed to where I don't even recognize it any more. Sadly it has lost the unique look it had and now just looks like every other city across the US, like many population centers have done. People don't realize they have a uniqueness (Batavia, the Original 13 Colony history; Tucson, the old west history; and so on across the country - reasons to visit a particular location as opposed to another place). Growing up we had apartments over the old department stores on Main Street with doors and stairs leading up to the upper level apartments. Only we old timers remember The Hamburger Hut on Main St. near the old Dipson Theater where kids could hang out after school and listen to records or live teen bands. Somehow I think some of those old buildings could have been "restored" at least and not everything "mowed down" and replaced with new so now Batavia looks just like Everytown USA. Ah well....

There was Carrols, Twin fair ...... a book store on, If I remember right, Jackson Street, the Polka-Dot, Genesse Lumber, Mancuso's Theater (beautiful Art -Deco), and Dwyer Stadium where I first heard the "F" word..... LOL ......we were like 8-9 years old and just wandered the City ..... never a problem ..... never trouble ...... We lived on Bank Street and would go to Northside Deli to get penny candy ......... I can not say I "miss" those days, but they were good for kids ..... it seemed to me that parents tried to raise better kids for the planet and not this destructive "make a better planet for our kids" ...... :-)

IMPORTANT UPDATE: In the wake of JCPenney filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to the COVID-19 epidemic, they announced on June 4th, 2020 that the Batavia City Centre location will be one of 154 CLOSING PERMANENTLY, with closing sales to begin on June 12th. Without the JCPenney anchor drawing people inside, anything that doesn't already have easy outside access won't stand a chance to stay in business going forward. At this point, Batavia might as well just go ahead with the "inside out" conversion (assuming the money originally granted isn't diverted to fill a more urgent budget need) once the JCPenney location is gone for good. P.S. Thanks for the shout-out to my comment on the previous video! :)

Whoa, that was disturbing. Hard to believe the ol' mall has come to this. To say it has seen better days is an understatement. At least there are memories of so many pleasant community experiences in the concourse in its heyday, along with so many mom and pop stores that were once successful, but now all gone with that proverbial wind....

I live in Batavia, the place is a structural disaster. There's a crack in the floor that runs the full length of the place. Sunny's restaurant is still in operation, so this guy is wrong about that. There's also another restaurant operating there called The Hawaiian Grill.

Retail malls around the world are closing. Time and the internet demand a change of coarse. E based businesses, medical and medical support services might be a fit. Fill the pedestrian areas with new and used motor vehicles, wow an indoor vehicle shopping experience. Open the pedestrian mall early in the morning for seniors to walk. Have a coffee shop that the public would support. Restaurants that attract a broad selection of people. Picture the "mall" as a destination, not a bad choice. Interior mall decor and kiosk type businesses that change purpose with time and public appeal. Those wishing to do business in the mall spend their own money. No taxpayer money, no federal or state grants, just investment capital, and hard work, I'm just a poor dumb farm boy from Stafford. "Let the naysayers begin." Just sayin !

I was born in Batavia in 1975. This particular mall started to go downhill in 1980. Another western New York industrial rust belt town that saw the industry leave. It's really sad. I don't blame them for not fixing it. The town is on life support. Ahhhh America!
