In this video, we discuss important safety tips for protecting your eyes during a solar eclipse. It is crucial to take the necessary precautions to avoid eye damage when viewing this rare phenomenon. One of the most important things to remember is to never look directly at the sun during a solar eclipse without proper eye protection. The intense light and radiation emitted during an eclipse can cause permanent damage to your eyes, including blindness. To safely view a solar eclipse, make sure to wear certified solar viewing glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standards. These glasses will protect your eyes from harmful rays and allow you to enjoy the eclipse without risking your vision. Additionally, you can use a pinhole projector or a solar filter on a telescope or camera to indirectly view the eclipse. This method will also prevent eye damage and give you a clear view of the solar eclipse. During a Total Solar Eclipse, there is a moment of Totality where the moon completely blocks out the sun, this is the only time where someone may briefly viewed the eclipse without risk of eye damage to the naked eye, but as soon as the sun re-appears, then solar eye protection is again required. Remember, your eyes are precious, so don't take any chances when it comes to solar eclipse eye safety. For more information on how to safely view solar eclipses and protect your eyes, check out our video and stay informed.

He I might have a tip for your videos. I have the feeling the sound and video of your clips are exactly matched (in time). This makes it feel a bit off since humans are used to have a (very small) delay for sound after a visual (having light travel faster than sound). There is a guy explaining it in a video in the video "Sound - Better late than early (Animation Tip)". This is about animation but also makes sence for videos if you record audio separate from video. Maybe i'm wrong tho :)

Hello dreyehealth. I have a question. Sometimes when bright sunlight shines into my eyes I can see a reflection of my veins from the inside of my eyes. What could be causing it and is it normal? Thanks.

*DISCLAMER DO NOT DO THIS I COULD'VE BLINDED MYSELF!* last time there was an eclipse in 2017 I stupidly had a quick peek at it for a second. I could actually see the sun in a crescent shape with the black moon covering over 3 quarters of it. I thought it was so beautiful. Then the pain set in and i quickly looked away. *Again don't do this it will hurt and can cause lasting or permanent damage!*

Really? Cause I can stare at the sun just fine, at least for a few seconds, and I went here because I hear more people saying about being blinded by a solar eclipse rather than being blind at the sun. I'm not trying to be a douche bag just genuinely being curious, but I get curiousity killed the cat.

I’ve heard that staring at the sun during an eclipse is even more dangerous than normal because your eye adjusts to the dark and widens the pupil to let in even MORE light. So it basically does away with some of the little natural protection you have from sunlight during the day
@Compguy321
@Compguy321 Ай бұрын
@@andrrevidanes8060 I think it is worse during solar eclipses because the eyes are adjusted to the partial darkness, so further exposed to the sun. Still, it is best to avoid looking at the sun at any time.

@@andrrevidanes8060I’ve done this before too, but during a solar eclipse it’s different, Normally when looking at the sun (which is fine, no permanent or lasting damage if u don’t look at it for too long) your pupils contract protecting the retina but during a solar eclipse your eye doesn’t relies the sun is out so it doesn’t contract and isn’t protecting the retina.

I would hope that the fact solar eclipse safety glasses are being sold everywhere would tip people off not to look directly at it. But there's probably a decent amount of people that didn't get glasses and think, "it's probably okay, I really want to look at it." People have actually gotten retina burns from this. After looking without protection they have a black crescent in their field of vision that never goes away. This was in cases where they looked for several minutes, but would you really want to risk it even for a few seconds? Visible solar eclipses happen more than once a decade, just wait til next time and get glasses in advance.

I watched it i think when I was in my late teens or early 20’s from inside my car with my dog and the windows closed . ( I hope) i painted it with my water colors . My eyes are starting to fail . It’s either from an abscessed molar which I’ve procrastinated in fixing it when it chipped during the coco iris and a family member was dying in hospice. I then learned about Vital Pulp Therapy as an alternative way to save failing adult teeth and delayed doing anything once I learned teeth can get revasculated and regenerated and there’s MRI images to prove it . APEC did a webinar presenting this data. I’m hoping my eye being puffy on the bottom is not a disease disease but caused by lymph trying to repair my necrotic molar and the lymph has no place to go. Actually it is a disease if it’s also caused by my tooth .

I used approved solar eclipse glasses the whole time I looked up and played safely by keeping one eye closed. When I couldn't see totality with glasses, I looked at others no glasses and lady said, 'i can safely look'. I was amazed and then after 80 seconds, I went behind clouds and saw time on my phone, and looked down shielding my eyes, and went back inside. It was a little scary for me but I had fun

@Doctor Eye Health, I can't confirm your time to notice retinal damage from the sun, but have encountered damage from a mobile LED source that took months to show in bright light. The reason I can confirm this long timeline is I am a high myopic and notice a thin black line on a disc of out-of-focus white light projected into my eyes from a very distant source at night. Doctor, I have also seen that the only possible treatment to reduce the spread of damage or scarring is anti-inflammatories. Would you know how this treatment could work.

Hello! Is it possible that a quick glance at a solar eclipse causes posterior vitreous detachment? I didn't find reliable eclipse glasses being sold in where i live and i foolishly looked at it for 1 second, 2 weeks later some floaters appeared in my vision, i went to different doctors, did the exams and i was diagnosed with PVD in both eyes (but i'm in my late 20s and i don't have any risk factors such as myopia, impact trauma or diabetes.) The OCT and fundus exam showed no damage to the macula. They all said to me that the main risk of looking the eclipse is damaging your central vision and that PVD can happen naturally during adulthood, being more common after mid age. I was also with dry eyes and eye strain from too much screen time that time the floaters appeared. Do you think the PVD and the eclipse are related?

Hello, I looked at the partial eclipse on October 14 of last year, I looked at it for less than a second without protection and then used a homemade dark camera that I made (it was formed in the way that the front part captures the light through an aluminum hole inside the box, in the middle a butter paper that reflected the inverted image of the eclipse and behind that I looked at the reflection) I went to the ophthalmologist after a month due to the appearance of floaters in my vision. He did an eye fundus and an optical coherence tomography and he told me that everything came out fine. But I still feel like I'm going blind because sometimes I notice small flashes of lights in the sky and in the darkness from time to time I notice black circles that appear and go away. I'm afraid

How would I know when to put the glasses on in the first place? I know when it’s supposed to start where I am and that but I’m just confused as to when I need to put them on to start. I’m just outside the totality and I know I need to keep them on all the time in that case

Dr. Allen, Quick question for you! Love your videos, thank you so much for all the information you provide for those who like to understanding deeper into optics. My question for this topic is, can you wear a welding hood to look at the solar eclipse? Or, rather a whole hood, can you use the filtering light shade that comes in welding hoods and hold it in front of your face? If you see this comment I would love to know your professional opinion on this.. As my plan, if able, is to use my husbands light shades and welding hoods for us and our kiddo to see this amazing phenomenon. Thank you so much!

Why don’t most companies like Maui Jim not offer blue colored lens? They have blue mirrored. But the base is either grey, green or amber type.

I understand that looking directly through a camera lens could damage your eyes because the light is going directly to your eyes not to a sensor.But if you look at a digital screen that’s on your camera then you’ll be fine.

So just to clarify, is there an extra risk from looking at the Eclipse, compared to just looking at the sun? In other words is looking at the Eclipse for 5 seconds any worse than looking at the normal Sun on a normal day for 5 seconds?

How can you tell if solar eclipse paper glasses are defective or not up to standard? Many companies use the ISO logo despite the deficiency. Can you use them without cleaning or should you wipe the fingerprints, lint, dust off?

It's more or less safe to watch the diamond ring appear, and stop after the sky goes blue again. It might do a small amount of damage, but it's so rare that it's about the same amount glancing at the sunrise or sunset each day.
