He was my father's first cousin's maternal grandfather. At the age of six, in 1961, I met him when he came to Rivington, near Bolton With his eyepatch and empty sleeve, I can remember thinking I had met a pirate. According to my father he said "Always obey your father; always serve your country; and never give up whatever the odds are against you". I feel very privileged to have met him but can only remember his eyepatch and the fact that he was sitting in a chair, smoking a pipe.

Question: if a Ghurka fights in the British army , is he considered a British soldier? I assume, they are called nepali ghurka fighting in the British army? Would you claim them as an example of British soldiers? Because i see so many comments praising him as "Proper British soldier" , example of the british toughness, and so on..... Except he wasnt British 😂, He was Belgian ( dad) /Irish ( mom) and initially he really didnt care about who he faught for. It was the British King himself who asked him in 1907 ( after awarding him another medal ) if he had become a citizen yet. When the answer was "No" , he urged him "to get it sorted" . It was way better for him , and moral , to bestow this kind of honor uporn British subjects rather than a foreigner. And this One only held the Belgian nationality up to that point. He really didnt care about nationality tho, he was a son and father of many nations. Blind patriotism i guess...., chauvenism is a French word, but the British perfected it.

He was an incredible man, and he was truly among the last of what was, even by the time of his birth, a dying breed of larger than life, aristocratic, semi-mad British officers that the Victorian age is so famous for. two reasons why there will not be a film about him., no three reaons. 1. His story just too incredible to be beleived. 2. His "career" in so many different theatres would be too expensive to film. 3. This will be the 4th or 5th video I have watched on this man. I'm honestly glad that you have put a video together on him because he is a legend! I was so excited to see this that I paused right away to thank you. I love history and knowledge. I don't have much of eaither myself so I gravitate to channels like yours to try and change that. Despite my KZbin name, which I admit sounds quite juvenile, I am nearly 45. My name is both a fictional character of my own making and the correct spelling of my middle name. I don't know why I shared that, but I did. Actually, while writing this comment I came up with the base of a short story base on my fictional character and Sir De Wiart. Yay, a reason for the distraction. But first I will watch and hopefully learn more about this amazing man.

The character Brigadier Ben Ritchie-Hook in Evelyn Waugh's excellent Sword of Honour trilogy is based on Adrian Carton de Wiart. Apparently he was an associate of Evelyn Waugh's father. It's from these novels I came across him. Well worth a read.
@johnmullen7775Ай бұрын
Thank you! That's exactly what I was wondering as I watched this. At least it's good to know that Ritchie-Hook's real-life model didn't engage in questionable recon during the Dakar mission of 1940 or die pointlessly in a random attack on some vaguely pro-Axis domobrans in Yugoslavia. And he died peacefully in County Cork, God bless him.

Compare the bravery and resilience of Sir Adrian with the calibre of "Sirs" we have today in Britain. How about Sir Keir Scrounger? Can you imagine him going off to war and being wounded, recovering and going back to where he was bound to be wounded again not once but several more times? There is no doubt in my mind that the Scrounger would cower in a cupboard in his "bought for" fancy suits at the mere mention of joining up to fight for his country. The don't make many men like Sir Adrian these days, mores the pity.
