Two quick points about this XXL. The lead channel is a passive eq, and the Ultra channel is an active eq. Honestly, I feel the Lead channel (passive eq) is meant for all your rhythm playing, and the Ultra channel (active eq) is meant for all your leadwork, seeing as this channel has the most midrange boost, especially the 'ultra' mode to cut through the mix of any live situation. I bought this amp when it first came out, and tbh, using it now in 2022 compared with everything else that has come out after it's release, I can honestly say this amp still sounds killer, and can go toe to toe with the best of them.

I've owned nearly every Peavey amp they've made since 1981 and will tell you....if you need a smaller combo and ever stumble upon the redstripe Revolution 112, buy it. It's the big brother to the Bandit and has the additional three gain options from its Ultra mode, as offered up with the XXL and missing on the Bandits. Both the lead and ultra channels also share active EQ so tone shaping options are all there. It also sounds better (to my ears) than the XXL 2x12 combo because the Revolution came standard with a Sheff instead of the overseas Blue Marvel speakers stock in the XXL. Made in the USA and heavy as f**k for a 1x12 but it will survive everything short of a bunker buster bomb detonating on top of it.

It’s fairly quiet and has great tone !! Ultra dials in a rectifier tone (no need to go past 9oclock) Maybe your pickups are too hot. Generally weaker pickups give a better tone. Let the amp set the gain. Great video man !!

@8:22 UI believe you are completely mistaken about the transformer. I cannot imagine an extra transformer being built in that is a lot different from other solid state amps. The switch only allows to match the cabs impedance and maintain power at higher impedances. Without switch, the decreasing load would just lower the systems power, which solid state power amps should be able to handle.
@belligerentamateur Жыл бұрын
nope, I'm definitely not wrong. The info was direct from the designer at Peavey
@cero815 Жыл бұрын
@@belligerentamateur sorry, no way the typical solid state amp "kind of automatically" adapts and "kind of like" increases the power output or something like that. Please have a look into the specs of the bandit you are reviewing for example as it has no selector switch. It is characterized with 100W into 4 ohms, 80W into 8 ohms and that means less at more impedance. What your switch does, is adapt the output impedance of the power stage and probably adapting it's output voltage (possibly but not necessarily also by switching between transformer coils) to keep power specs constant on different load conditions. I am afraid, I cannot imagine your developer explained it to you like you are trying to explain.

Nice presentation. Here is my experience with solid state amps: when I turn them up on stage to match the accoustic drum volume, the clarity was totally lost, but when I used a microphone and went to thousands of watts PA ,problem seem to be be solved. The engineers were really thinking when they added the transformer after the power amp stage. It's a tactic I've thought about for years before knowing they had done it. There are a few specifics with solid-states that compromise them, *and adjusting the voltage to ampere ratio at the power amp stage has always been a critical factor I've pondered to eliminating their weaknesses.* There's also a bandwidth crossover shift produced by them. With my experience, education and results from my own 100% original circuits, knowing the science at the quantum level ultimately shows semiconductors can in fact do it all and much better than tubes, *but nobody has really followed through enough to do it until the current solid-state takeover which is ultimately operating analog semiconductors in their digital mode.* I expect digital to completely takeover within the next 10 years, *particularly as super semiconductors become commercially viable with materials such as phosphorene.* Engineers have finally taken measures to improve chip architecture for asymmetrical clipping, and algorithms that have damn near cloned the texture, fizz and glassy density of tubes *most apparent in the highs.* In the end, it's why I am studying independently to learn to design digital architecture and programming languages since I never made it that far through college in pursuit of my electrical engineering degree. *I will still say, analog s.s. is king and can do it all better which my own designs prove, but staying current with your field's technology is how you truly earn the right to say you're a scientist, so it's mandatory for me ethically and in virtue.* I hope to release s.s. analog equipment because I am still confident I can greatly outdo the competition, and while selling at a much lower price point with the ultimate country of origin and warranty policies, but I will also need to produce digital equivalents to that work aside from design and produce at least some valve gear.

Peavey's gain structure is classicly on the fizzy side and I felt this one souned pretty similar to their tube amps in that regard, but that's just me
@frog_stomp2 жыл бұрын
Spot on. When I owned this thing I found myself leaving it on the clean channel and using distortion pedals or multi effects processors for my gain. Clank, mud and fizz is all I heard on anything else

I like this amp so much I bought 8 of them to hoard...I live on the Lead channel with this amp, I use the preamp out into a Peavey Classic 120 Tube Power Amp and it sounds so much better and gets rid of that fizz. 🤘🤘🤘🤘

Cool review. I felt the same way when I owned this thing. It was awesome when I was 16-17 years old and playing a half stack. This head is loud for a solid state amp but I couldn't agree with you more. There's some cool tones in there but it's mostly clanky, muddy and fizz for days on that ultra channel. Anyone thinking about a solid state head, I plead with you......don't. Wait, save up and go actual tube, not transtube. You will thank yourself

I got one for you to check out if you ever have the chance to, and since we are talking about Solid State amps. The Kustom Quad 200 HD, in my opinion is an overall decent Solid State amp. Especially because, well, one it was free, and I have it running through a Marshall 4x12 1960 cab load with V30's. I don't have any pedals of any type at the moment, but plan on getting something. Going for that love or hate it Buzzsaw guitar tone. I think this amp would be an amazing platform just for that, and possibly other tones...but the Buzzsaw tone for sure.

I’m not sure if mine is faulty or you’re running something through this behind the scenes. I can’t get that much gain through the crunch and British settings by itself. I do run a maxon st9 pro+ on the British setting and it sounds great but without it the gain isn’t really close to what you have.
@longi6253 ай бұрын
Right from the off the amp is in the Metallica MOP or Justice ball park. I Bet if you double tracked it would sound very close.

Love these solid state amps, that XXL sounds great! Recently picked up a Crate VTX350H which has the clean and lead channels from the Ampeg VH140C as channels 1 and 3 respectively. It has a 350 watt power section though so it screams. Well worth checking out and significantly less expensive than the Ampeg.

5:02 that AC/DC tone is on point! Good crunch tone. I also liked the Metal tones you got with it and the SD-1 (on the British mode) 12:04 and 12:45 , prolly the best tones you got out of it. (Edits: lots of them, I kept expanding and correcting the comment as I watched)

Why is it so gigantic? Is it kilowatt range? Seymore Duncan has a 200watt power amp that's tiny.

Hahaha ha I told you it sounds like urine. Lol. But seriously, I wish I had picked up this amp the other day when I saw one. I'm not a fan of the highs of the amp until you boosted it. also I thought it was fine with the ultra channel on my headphones. It didn't come across to harsh. Which leads me to believe this amp may hold up well when recording. I have a stellar cab for tracking so I'd like to expand my amp collection a little to get those slightly different spices you get from different amps. Wouldnt mind a couple more cabs tho for those extreme tonal differences.
@belligerentamateur2 жыл бұрын
Yep, sometimes the frequencies that are harsh in the room don't get picked up by the mic, which like you said, makes it good for tracking/recording!
@Admiral_Bongo2 жыл бұрын
Sounds cool. But still doesn't beat VH140C when it comes to that title. The nastiness factor is missing. EDIT: besides, damn it's scooped, though.
