People should be aware that solid state does not mean digital.

Yep. Only two analog solid state amps here.
@darwinsaye
@darwinsaye 5 жыл бұрын
@@jsullivan2112 Very true, but we live in an era when there are both analog solid state amps and digital solid state amps, and there is such huge difference between the two technologies that they should be considered as different from each other as tube amps and solid state amps are. It doesn't help to simply declare them all "solid state". There would be an outrage in the tube community if someone posted a video comparing amps, called "Tube amp comparison", but half of them were hybrid, solid state+tube amps, even though they are technically both tube amps. It doesn't matter to me because I know to watch for those particular details, but for people new to the gear, things should be more accurately descriptive.

William Don “Solid state” can mean analog or digital, and the difference between the two is as wide as the difference between either of them and tube. Digital is solid state, but not all solid state is digital.

I have been juggling the idea of getting one to replace my Valve Jr stack. Its big for someone who just plays at home and awkward enough to be an annoyance to move. I've wanted an orange since I was a kid and finally got to play the Crush 60 and 35rt recently and I was super impressed by both of them, I'm always happy to read comments from happy owners and I don't know that I've seen anyone that hasn't liked it.

I’ll make this easy for y’all... I have the Orange Crush 35RT & the shit is a monster, but can be a gentlemen at the same time.... the day I brought it home I compared it to my other combos Marshall, Randall, and black star... I’ll just cut to the chase and say the Crush 35RT is now my ONLY amp.... and the money I made from selling the other amps went back into my pedal board/guitar....as a man with a long long record...I can honestly say that buying the 35RT variant was easily one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life😂😂 you could surely gig a small venue with the Orange Crush 20/35..

Roland JC-40 is by far the most versatile solid state amp on the market today, especially as a pedal platform. Running the effects loop in stereo in parallel mode essentially turns a single, moderately priced amp, into a loud and clear stereo wet/dry/wet rig! I don't know why more people arent running their rigs that way... might be the extra cables. I'd challenge anyone to try it even with just a reverb and/or a delay in the loop running in parallel. MInd Blowing! Anyways, thanks for doing a vid like this! Great job.

Ian Locke I’ve had a jc40 for 2 years now and I’ve been laughed at when showing up to jam with new people simply because of the amps size. Then when I start playing they end up complimenting my tone and they can’t believe how loud it is. Just a Mexican esquire through sd1, big muff, dod phaser and flanger, dl4 and red panda context always on in the effects loop for a shoegaze rig.

Is it at all possible to use at home? I loved the 120 but way too loud. Never tried the 40. Been looking at the JC22 for home but I really like the 40 better. I’m concerned about even being able to use it at home. I’ve heard it’s very loud. Kinda like the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 40 watt. That thing is stupid loud and impossible to use at home. I’d love to find a video about the JC40 at bedroom levels. 😊

Thanks for the video. I was shocked at how much the Orange amp sounded like tubes. Impressive! For a solid state sound, the Roland gets that better and the stereo effect in one amp is amazing. Those would be my choices. One comment, the voice was so much louder than the music I was constantly having to go back and forth adjusting the two. Balancing that out will make for a perfect video.

@jburdsinfuse 4 жыл бұрын
@@ivanlow2570 it sure did - but I’ve since sold the Kraken and still have the Katana. It’s a really good sounding amp that is super versatile. Specifically, you can use it like an FRFR. It’s not completely flat, but it handles preamp pedals in the loop, pedals in front, doubles as a stage monitor, good for practice. And on its own, it sounds great, even super loud.

I have owned every amp reviewed here. I have gigged with everyone of them. I have the 100 champ version not the 40. The champion 100 clean channel is excellent. Great in a band context. Something changed with the distortion tones. Sounds much more solid state and will not sound good if you have a other tube amp on stage. But if you are alone it is great. The Roland Jazz 40 clean is gorgeous. The effects melt into it like butter and add to it. Pedals for dirt sounds better than the dirt channel but the pedals do not become one with the amp. They do there thing on top of the clean in a very solid state and sterile kind of way. I miss the 12 inch speaker for dirty tones. The Orange is my regular grab and go. It cranks. It does the two channel thing easily. The clean is great and can cover many flavors with an EQ pedal in front of the amp in your pedal chain. The dirt is raunchy in a good way. Full spectrum of range when playing with the volume and master volume. Excellent amp for gigging. Add a 112 extension cab for a big stereo sound on stage and never look back. This review is on point. They are all great amps and top dogs. 👍

I've owned Marshals, Orange, and Rolands both tube and soldi state. I gig in small and medium sized venues with a 4 piece. It's loud enough. However, for large venues you would need to mic. it. The best solid state amp I ever had was a Laney Tube Fusion 100 50 watt amp. I think it was the best solid state amp for me because back then I played mostly The Shadows and The Ventures... I got very nice, sparkly clean sounds with it - especially when I hit the "Bright" button on it. The guitar I played was a 1983 Squier MIJ Strat. The distortion sounds were great too, but I loved the amp exclusively because its clean tones.

I am so surprised that Blackstar were not included in the line up. After trying many combo amps I was blown away by the rich creamy sound of the Blackstar HT60 Stage. It is just amazing, but requires two people to carry it after a long gig. I hunted around for something more portable (and robust) for some time until getting properly acquainted with the Blackstar ID60. To my mind this combo has almost everything and really deserved to be in this video.

JC 40 really should come with a 3way foot switch to toggle the dist/verb/trem. you have to buy either 3 separate single switches or a 3rd party 3way switch, of which I am unsure of how well they work. The thing has 3 separate foot switch outputs for christ sake... stupid.. that being said... the sound is amazing.. played JC since the 90's .. gigged with the 120 for years... about to drop the hammer on the 40. great vid.. love your personality.

The JC120 clean is divine. Add it's onboard stereo chorus and it fills your world so good, it's fuckin mental. People. There are so many vintage solid state analog amps that were produced, but at the time they were made people had NO CLUE how to use them and get great tones. Some did, so let me take you to school: Buzz/Melvins, Adam Jones/TOOL (Sunn Beta Lead) Dime (Randalls) George Lynch (Randall RG) Chuck Shuldiner (Marshall Valvestate) EVH (used a LAB series L5 on the beat it solo) Ty Tabor, B.B. King (also LAB series) Nuno Bettancourt, Richie Sambora, Mick Mars (Theatre of Pain), David Gilmour (GK250ML) Cannibal Corpse (Marshall Valvestate 8100) Meshuggah ( POD, Line 6 Vetta ) The Faceless (Vetta) Fear Factory (jeez Dino used Line 6 Pod PRO/Vetta, now Kemper) Judas Priest (Rockman, then Marshall Valvestates) Iron Maiden (Galien Kruger 250ML on somewhere in time) White Zombie (Marshall Valvestate 8100) Alex Lifeson (GK 250ML, then others) Def Leppard (Rockmans on Hysteria, 12x platinum) Allan Holdsworth (Quilter Labs, Rockman, Yamaha, Hughes and Kettner, Pearce, and more - all S.S.) EVH (yes, used an amp by Holmes for some stuff/Hagar days) Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Eagles, The Who, Terry Kath (of Chicago), Joe Walsh, Eric Clapton, AND Frank Zappa used the battery powered Pignose 7-100. Brain May (Vox VBM-1) The list grows when Googling the Ampeg vh140 or Crate gx130, both clearly popular with very many metal bands Even SRV was partially S.S., yes!! Cesar Diaz modded just about all of SRV’s amps with a solid state rectifier, to prevent harmful voltages from damaging the tubes at such high volumes. That and that he used a solid state tube screamer to help things along. As did many others in the tube world. You know there's more, you'll find it all if you use that Google for more than wanking, and you might learn something. *There's the amp I use [my secret], and I run a line out of it into a Carvin FET 400. That's 200w in stereo through 4x12's, and it will throw you a lovely beating. It's a delicious tube tone that is just so great it fools everyone to thinking I used a tube amp. No. And it's made in 1979 partially designed by Paul Rivera, Sr. and Pat Quilter of QSC/Quilter. No it's not that red knobbed Fender, but that S.S. and is great as well. Happy Hunting, or wanking. Ha ha.

I just got the orange crush pro 60 and holy fuck I love it... hands down the best amp I've ever had And i think it sounded best on this video.. I'll pick it over tube anyday I Also kept hearing that the clean channel I ssd not great well I'm here to tell u that's bull shit the clean and dirty channel r perfect ..the only reason I'd ever sell it is if I move up the 120 . But still may keep the 60 for the convenience...

60 is a 1x12 right? I have the 120, and it was so worth it. Such a rich sound having the 2x12. Pretty sure the crush series is based on a rockerverb- I'd love to eventually get one of those monsters and a matching 4x12, but the crush definitely doesn't disappoint at all. Honestly in some senses the crush is better as you don't have to crank it as loudly to get a monster tone, but I still dream about playing a rockerverb lol

Valve amps are more touch sensitive. That "blues on the verge of break up" where you can go from clean to break up with just your fingers. This is what solid state still lacks. That said I loved the way the JC 40 sounded.

I've played many solid state amps that do just that. I don't think it's that. There is a presence to a tube amp that just cuts through and sounds so alive. Maybe it's because they have a very narrow field idk.

I thought it interesting and brave in raising your head above the parapet when you recommended the Fender Champion 40. Lord love me I am no advocate for Fender as a brand as I detest their corporate region blocking and price gouging practices, but the Champion series are truly remarkable underappreciated and overlooked amps, in particular the 2x12" 100 and 1x10" 40. I have two Fender amps, & multiple Blackstar so I'm not hung up on tradition or brand just performance, one of which is the Champion 100. I often recommend the Champion 40 for consideration to anyone starting out because of its many strengths including price, but it gets overshadowed in the comparison/shootout 'research' by newbs who knowing nothing other than the hypothetical, gauge 'best' on techno novelty and number of features, effects etc. For American cleans Fenders Champion series are underestimated and underappreciated purely attributable to the snob factor of their solid state. IDK about the 40, but the 100 takes pedals well too. For the price, the 100 in particular rates an 'mention in dispatches' as a standout.

I’ve got a Katana 50, a Nextone Artist and a Quilter Cub50 amongst others and the Katana has lots of effects and can store many presets, the Nextone does sound better but very few effects and limited preset numbers and the Cub50 is quite limited with three inputs Blonde, Tweed and Black but it sounds the best by far. It’s all analogue and has the touch and soft feel of a tube amp. The other 2 sound great but in the end there is a harsh and dry sound from their power amps. They can be tweaked to reduce the typical transistor sound but in the end always there. The power amp in the Quilter has been designed to have a high impedance output like a tube and models sag like a tube but it’s all analogue. So I’m selling the Katana and bought a Boss GT1 for my Fx and I’m pondering the Nextone as it has a pretty big sound which is good in a bigger room. The rub is here in Oz the Cub50 is $1200 and a Katana is $400 but for my money the Quilters are the best SS amps out there give one a go you’ll be surprised. Nice review except for the Quilter omission!

The Orange Crush CR60C may be a lot better than the Crush 20RT, but believe me, the 20RT is a great little amp already. And it's a kind of shame that the 60 only has 2-band-EQ for the clean.
