The interplay between the solo and drums during the last chorus is amazing.

Totally agree with this ! , I think I'm correct in saying JJ sited this solo as the best improvisation on trombone he had heard ,brilliant Job Rob !

Yes, I had heard that. I don't think Slide ever got the full recognition he deserved.

@@RobEgertonJazzTranscriptions Yes its true and as I'm sure you know he arranged for most of the major big bands

I actually think that was a different solo in this same performance, over a fast blues

JJ was referring to a solo from a different Dizzy Gillespie 70th birthday concert (this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnzbomimYqiogKc ), but this one is superb as well

This video has the referred-to solo and also shows the Downbeat article where J.J. made his statement: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqWYqYFmra-JjtU

Music hero of mine growing up. Met him 2-3x’s in Chicago. Very nice and generous person.

Sorry, I just don't get it. As always, Slide's ideas, as is the case with the improvised lines of most 'early' trombone icons (except Urbie), exceed their technical facility, such that 'I' can't stop hearing the...reduction in musical consequence that comes of the trombones persistent residual mechanical-awkwardness (absent from Brookmeyer or McConnel), which for 'me' reliably defeats the phrase musically. Trombonists are too quick to make excuse for the patina of 'troubled play' that they believe is the trombonist obligation. A new generation of players 'may' come along that transcend the dominant performance paradigms refusal to evolve and overcome in address the elephant that has always been in the room. Trombone is typically, sans new methods, unmusically clumsy. That's why I prefer: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eISyf6KdZ8l2jJYsi=Vv4s4WTEgdWU-1Cs As for the 'interplay', listen to Ron Carter, Bob James and particularly the tonal invention genius of Steve Gadd swimming upstream against his own flow: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZjRaImcja1lfbssi=o2Ba9VlSchtI0-Dz And here's Urbie tossing out ideas served by sufficient facility to partner them if only to a rude and unappreciative audience: Father forgive them... kzbin.info/www/bejne/fabdkpeFYs2mf8ksi=zTbhQOYwvQVbTLbY
