As always great content. Learning to brace properly was amazing for my lower back. I have herniated L4-L5 and L5-S1 (not from lifting) and learning to brace properly helped alleviate that pain. I am able to squat and deadlift more than ever in my life while approaching 50 years old!

I hope you absolutely understand how this knowledge has value beyond most anything most are doing. Martins solved my clicking should (due to dislocation) just by watching his videos I started doing is shoulder rotation stuff at very low weight and never went close to trying anything heavy. (he didn't tell me to do it, he just always did it in his videos) Blows my mind what some strongman know and most others don't. I wish you and Martins would do a comparative discussion on ALL of this stuff. It's so fucking important for so many people. (nothing even to do with people going into strength anything) I picked Martins because he is the only other strongman that put this kind of stuff out, granted it wasn't nearly as common as what you have been doing. Everyone has their own way. You two just seem to be absolutely fascinated by the science of human movement. It's fucking amazing and refreshing. It's also crazy because a childhood of martial arts in the early 90's taught me to never breathe via the stomach. (other than meditation) and to keep my solar plex flexed as much as possible. (which makes since in fighting......but they didn't explain it that way to kids)

As someone who lifts "heavy" objects all day, I'm really happy you put this out there. Most people just say "try not to lift with your back" and that's all they tell you. I tried to "not lift with my back" for multiple years and always ended up walking around with lower backpain. Since I started working on my posture and learning how to brace myself like this my back has been feeling so much better! This should be something they teach you about at school during P.E. as this would benefit most people.

Just started trying to lift heavy after a couple of years consistently in the gym. I was getting back pain squatting 100kg 5x5 and deadlifting 140 5x5. Found this video and started practicing it. This week i was checking my max, up to a 160kg squat and a 235kg deadlift and my back pain is pretty much none existent after those loads. All from bracing at the top. Thanks so much @mitchellhooperstrongman

Bulged the L4&L5 in my back while squatting in April of 2022. Couldn’t pick up my 1 year old son or get dressed on my own due to the pain. After reading Dr. Stuart McGills book “Back Mechanic” which focuses heavily on abdominal pressure I can now squat 400+ and deadlift 450+. Took a lot of time and diligence but if you have chronic low back pain just know there is hope for pain relief if you work hard.

squatting and deadlifting in the 500s I think I'm decently far along the line. had to learn through bits and pieces of squatU and resources like Alan Thrall or Brian Alsruhe or Omar Isuf, but I love this very complete explanation all in one place. great resource to point others to!

The only issue I have is the holding breath during a squat or deadlift, as I have had a heart attack and the blood pressure spike from holding my breath and bracing for more than 3 seconds is not good. So I often breath out in the hole of a squat or as I start to transition during a deadlift. Same with bench to a certain extent, but i've learned to breath through it.

Along with learning to strictly brace your core, the next best thing you can do to improve your squats is just any kind of single leg lifting. Almost everyone is going to have a dominant leg, usually a significant muscle imbalance, if you don't correct that you're going to end up leaning WAY to one side on a heavy lift, which of course leads to "ouch". (This was my condition finishing my last training block.)

Like this video a lot. Have been trying to perfect this since seeing videos from Brian Alsruhe emphasizing the importance of breathing and bracing (also have seen Squat University talk about it). I think I am currently pretty good at doing it in "practice" settings. My issue is twofold: remembering to did it between reps and also figuring out, on a given lift, when is the best time. So for squats and bench, and rows it's "easy" (if I remember). But for an overhead press it's hard to get that full breath when the bar is in the rack position, but also feels unstable to do so when it's locked out overhead. Deadlift is tricky because at the bottom point, your sternum is bent over and doesn't feel like it can get the full amount of air in.

Regarding the final question, I think I am not even at the starting line in this progression. I've recently started to have persistent back pain for the first time since I started lifting (have had some on and off) and I am starting to think my abdominal muscles are just incredibly weak for some reason, especially as compared to where my posterior chain is at now vs 10 months ago. I find it hard to even hold abdominal flexion unless I am leaned forward slightly, and I doubt what I try to do could even be called bracing. Like biceps and cardio, abs have been something I've avoided working as much as some other things because I "don't like" how it feels (shakey, "uneven" between right and left). I've been thinking about this and reflecting on how I move and where the force is while loaded, and I seem to have figured out a way to balance between my spine and hips while using my abdominals as little as possible to compensate for their weakness, and I think it's catching up to me as the weights have gone up. Planning to take some time to back off the lifts slightly and focus on abdominals as often as possible, at least until they feel stable and confident in related exercises, and I feel like I am actually bracing.

Should someone lifting with an inguinal hernia avoid bracing, or should they still try to use it? Also just to throw it out there, I asked before about whether the 'strong people recovering should use some weights and progress faster than non-lifters' would also apply to hernia repair recovery, if you can answer that one. Anyway, thanks! Great content (and I know you're very busy)!
