The Japanese audience is what Band-Maid really wants to develop as, according to a commentator in Japan said, it's only now that Kanami's genius is being recognized in the Japanese music industry.

A lot of people don't know this but they were playing well over 100 shows a year in tiny venues throughout the underground Japanese rock scene before they gained a decent following. They've worked extremely hard to get where are and deserve every bit of their success.

This discussion reminds me of a line from a documentary about the Beatles - and I will have to paraphrase: "It took the Beatles 5 years to become an overnight success." - like someone said above or below: like the Beatles, they worked very very hard to get where they eventually got. They didn't start out playing The Hollywood Bowl, Shea Stadium and Budokan.

I'm gonna guess this was their first manager, who reportedly told Miku to stop the "Po" thing. I wonder if he was replaced because his bosses found out he passed over the e-mail from the very outfit that went on to put the band on the map. To be fair, Google Translate and DeepL weren't around back then, but OTOH it sounds as though maybe he just wasn't on the same wavelength as the band and thus working at cross-purposes.

Hi Wave !! , On one of the radio shows Miku and Saiki said that the label"s plans were to fire Misa, Akane and Kanami but because they each had separate contracts they were to become a singing and dancing duet called "Dance Maid" !! Saiki said "I didn't come to Tokyo to do that" ! At some point they all discussed and agreed they would stay together and continue on as Band Maid if the label dropped them.

Here's the point where they talk about it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpu5kp6fgrt1e9E They can laugh about it now, but the fact that they say they cried so hard over it at the time brings a tear to my eye whenever I think about how close they came to being disbanded. Then again, I have a feeling that the super-human determination of the small pigeon would have made her dreams come true no matter what road blocks were in her way.

That was quite the shocker when they brought that up, and just goes to show how out-of-touch these companies are. No doubt the proposal was pre-Thrill, but that doesn't make the idea any less stupid. (Note: for anyone who hasn't heard it yet, it's still on the Band-Maid Nippon Unofficial channel, Ep. 18, about 4 minutes in, synced with t-shinji's translation)

I've always loved those kind of stories where bands or artists are "saved" by something that wasn't planned at all. My favorite story is kind of Band-Maid's Thrill in reverse! During the late seventies, there was an american rock band who released three albums without popular success (critics were good, venues were full but no radio or TV airplay, so no record sales). But that band was surprised to hear that they were successful ... in Japan. So in 1978 they did a tour in Japan and were welcomed like The Beatles! They did their soldout shows and then came back to America where they were still unknown. A live album was released only in Japan, as a souvenir of the tour. And then a miracle happened: a few american people heard the album, loved it and ordered it from Japan. And then more (30.000 imports!). And then some radios started to play one track, in more and more heavy rotation. In the end, the record company decided to released the album in the USA in 1979 and it became a smash hit, selling millions and ranking high in the charts - it is one of the best live albums ever, the band is Cheap Trick, and the album "Live at Budokan". Thank you Japan!

"Made in Japan" didn't exactly save Deep Purple, but there are similarities to the story. They were not even going to make such an album, but two members of the band decided to put the effort in to mix the raw recordings of their Japan tour, and it turned into one of the greatest live albums ever made.

Miku was saying how the management company wanted Saiki and Miku to be in a group called Dance Maid before Thrill changed theirs and our lives. Tears were shed but then the World listened. As a band who should be the most listened to in Rock. They haven't had the best luck with the Virus stopping their prestige Bukodon concert and stopping their touring. Now it feels as if they are having to start again. Must be grateful that they have the character to keep on going when really they could do anything.

in an interview it was said that only Miku and saiki was contracted to the management company and the rest were hired extras so when it was decided that the thrill video would be the last shot for the band to get notice. it was also said that both Miku and saike would be repackaged as DANCE MAID a pair of singing dancers, both girls are said to have cried and saiki saying "i didn't come to Tokyo for that"

When they asked Miku what her plans were for the band she did not skip a beat and said "World domination". It surprised the interviewer but she said it again. This has been her plan from the beginning. She could not have been more than 23-24 at the time. I don't know about you but I didn't have a clue when I was 24. Awesomely great part 2!!! Only one minor correction, though. Miku wasn't envisioning hard rocking music but cool music without knowing what "cool" music is. Miku was a fan of Tokyo Jihen (a female fronted Japanese rock band) and thought Tokyo Jihen's music was cool. So Miku might have been unconsciously envisioning rock music. Anyway, all members liked "Thrill" so much, and they decided the rock music is the direction they should take.

Thank you for this series. BTW if you also envision chapters for each member, maybe this will be dug in the Miku's, but it was the management company that approached her about working in a band (although she no doubt would have wanted that as well.) At that time, Miku replied, "I like bands, and I admire Tokyo Jihen (Tokyo Incidents.)[1] Besides, I want to do cool music rather than cute music. But I also like maids." The management agreed, saying, "It would be interesting to combine maids and bands, let's mix it up!" [2] [1] Miku said she jolted by their music when she was in high school.[2] Tokyo Incidents debuted in 2004 with the single "Gunjō Biyori" ["Ideal Days for Ultramarine,"] which reached No. 2 on the Oricon Weekly Chart. [2] Reference: _GiGS Presents BAND-MAID THE DAY BEFORE WORLD DOMINATION_ (2019) pp.22-23. - The relevant part of this book are easily accessible as the publisher released a PDF file for correction. It is a Japanese PDF document, but it can be copy-pasted and read reasonably well with machine translation. Search words (since I'm not sure if external links will work): "BAND-MAID P.022-023.pdf"

(A trial to YT internal links posting) Tokyo Incidents "Gunjō Biyori" (2004) kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXWVnpuAaKesfbM From the interview in the above comment: Miku came to like music because of her grandmother, who attended enka karaoke lessons, and she, too, became an enka fan when she was an elementary school student. Sayuri ISHIKAWA "Amagi-goe" ["Walk Over Amagi Pass"] (1986) kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2GbXppogZh4ms0 - Marty Friedman, who moved to Japan and is known for his love of enka, covered this song in his 2009 Japanese song collection _Tokyo Jukebox_ . Her mother was somewhat worried about Miku, who solely sang enka all the time even though was still an elementary school student, and apparently Miku was told to listen to Morning Musume or something like that more (laughs). Morning Musume "Love Machine" (1999) - Ranked #1 on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart for three consecutive weeks. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHKam2mbp96DjJY So, she also came to like Morning Musume and other idol songs, but it was not until she was in high school and her friends took her to see a live concert of a local band in her hometown that she became interested in rock bands.

@@WavePotter Thanks for taking the time to reply. I have wondered why Miku's references to Tokyo Incidents are often overlooked (although Ringo Sheena's her voice is certainly not to everyone's taste). That book includes individual interviews with each member like the one with Miku above, in which, for example, Kanami told such like a episode about how Saiki encouraged her when she was depressed because her songs were not getting adopted. For people like you, IMO, it is worth reading even if you have to import it on your smart phone and translate it into English.

There is a similar storyto theirs for the US rock band Black Stone Cherry, who I first saw at Hyde Park in 2012. There stage show and audience appeal was great but they were very underated in the US and by their own agency. Meanwhile back in the UK their popularity and record sales started to grow. During their next UK tour they thanked their UK fans for supporting them as their agency was not going to continue backing them. wow! very nice. I had no idea! I started listening to them in 2015. Thrill was the first MV I experienced by them. I quickly wanted ot hear more to see if they were just a 1 hit wonder or what. Real Existence was next and I was hooked. I had no idea that they were almost done before I even got to discover them! Amazing. thanks for all the time researching! fantastic. I love knowing the back stories like this! ❤❤❤❤

Strange how the air head was so instrumental in tracking the background to Thrill's international success. At every turn the childlike Kanami is right there fully conversant with technology and working her socks off to create outstanding music. Seemingly she uses piano, guitar and computer, creates backing tracks with synths and who knows what - some airhead!

Thanks alot from Michigan,Wave...Unless Band Maid comes here I doubt I'll ever see them live. Thanks to the world of YT I'm able to make wonderful discoveries that otherwise would be unknown to me. Your breakdowns are always informative and entertaining . My faith in Rock music has been resurrected ! God bless Band Maid & Wave !

I truly hope "The Bug" does not make a reappearance before election season to restrict activities... It's the "elephant in the room" but it has to be considered. I would be crushed for the band and all classy Maidiacs !

@@frankandre4385 so true. I saw Scandal recently, who canceled their last tour due to Covid. They finally decided it was safe. Then despite being super careful, first one caught Covid, followed by the others. They delayed a couple shows and canceled the rest of the US tour. So definitely something to consider.

I came late to the party ,thrill was the first song I heard and it blew me away ,veered away from rock music for about 40 years as it did nothing for me anymore but this band blew all the cobwebs away and gave me goosebumps ,I’ve watched most of your band maid critiques and that helped me to appreciate all the musical nuances only a musician could do ,so thank you 🙏

I've been a fan of rock music as long as I can remember. In my 60 years an this planet, I've never been a member of a fan club. Band-Maid changed that. I remember back when I was a member of a FB Babymetal fan group. One of the admins is a huge J-Rock fan and posted the link to Thrill. I have been hooked ever since and will finally get to see my fav band in Oct. at Aftershock.

Great job, Wave!! I’m glad you will also have more episodes backgrounding the band members, and I am looking forward to it. Band-Maid is genuinely a world-class band, and their music is exceptional. The band’s beginnings are a story that needs to be told repeatedly for prosperity. They were not “manufactured” by an individual or company, not family members or close friends. They were strangers who shared the same interests, recognized each other talents and creativity, and were drawn together with the same goal: to create music for everyone worldwide to enjoy and love. The story of Band-Maid is music history, and how this group of unknowns became best friends who make the best music is nothing but a legend.

Thanks Wave for another great episode!, Band-Maid's unexpected success can be attributed to luck or a series of almost miraculous coincidences... but i prefer to see it simply as FATE (pun intended). They just deserve to be succesful and keep going to becoming what they are now: the best rock band on the planet

Greets for SEA (Malaysian here). Nicely done Wave. Really appreciate your effort doing these videos. I actually discovered Band-Maid around 2016 and while I liked what I heard and saw it wasn't until 2020 during lockdown that I really got into them. Before that I was more into bands like SCANDAL etc. Since then I've been completely hooked. There is something very special about this band, I listen to a lot of music, Western and Japanese and Band-Maid is a band like no other. I hope they stay together a long time. Really looking forward to their new EP. And of course the next part of this video series, should you make more.

Thank you Wave. Well put together and very informative for new fans. Great to relive the history of Band-Maid thru your videos. The Beatles also almost did not happen. But thanks to their manager who bought as meny copies of their record "Love Me Do" as he could affort, The Beatles sold enough records to get Radio Play Time, the song "Love Me Do" made it into the charts, and the rest is history. I feel Band-Maid's history has a few similarities with The Beatles, BM's hard work at the beginning are starting to pay off, World Domination is coming. Looking forward to your next video 🙂

Yes... "one song" definitely can changes your carrier... even can changes "Your Life" hhe.. so "Thrill" is the savior for them... and i assume "Yoyoka" is your savior in your "Music struggles" isn't wave? Hhe... Never easy to reach "succes" instant in "music carrier" eventually, so this "Documentary" proved that... Anyway i never see you jamming with yoyoka in "full band" where i can see that... hhe... is that in the patreon?
