I mean, they have coexisted since 2010. Generations, Mania, Mania Adventures, Origins Plus, the IDW Anniversary Classic comics (and hopefully Superstars) prove that Classic Sonic do work even with Modern Sonic going along with it. The only bad thing is that it divides the playerbase and the fanbase.

He is moving on, "Classic" and "Modern" Sonic are now experiencing 2 different universes due to the stuff that went on in Generations, so Modern Sonic still had the Classic games and maybe Mania, but he isn't gonna have Superstars in his since that's part of Classic Sonic's timeline, just like how this newer version of Classic Sonic isn't gonna have a Shadow (for now atleast) because he's never been to station square and there for hasn't even had SA1 happen, they are both just going on different routes.
