I really appreciate how you pointed out the massive changes each zone in the game has received through the years. The history of SRB2 is really fascinating, and it's something that a lot of other reviews tend to gloss over. I similarly only discovered this game recently... this year, in fact. I was so impressed (and still am) by the amount of quality fun present in both the base game and its many community creations, to the point that I was rather surprised it took this long for me to hear about it. And to think that even more is yet to come! SRB2 has quickly become my second-favorite game of all time... just one step below Minecraft.

Oh hey, can't say I expected to see someone like you cover this game. I'm pretty deep into SRB2's modding scene, having helped work on some fairly popular mods such as Blaze, Marine, Honey, and Stephchars, while making a couple solo mods like Cross-Momentum and Bowser as well. Honestly, my favorite part about the game is the community. It's such a wonderful, welcoming place that as long as you're not an asshole, you're sure to be welcomed in to with open arms. If it wasn't for all the great friends i've made, I probably wouldn't still be modding it to this day. Little fun fact here, did you know that this isn't just the first 3d fangame, but the first 3d sonic game period, at least in the US? The first public release of the DooM version of srb2 came out on October 31st, 1999, whereas Sonic Adventure released on September 9th, 1999 in america. Really just goes to show how long this game's been in active development for.

The modding scene does suffer from a slight case of what I would call the Calamity Mod Effect, where as a natural result of the community's more established close circles making huge leaps in quality, the community itself expresses the raising of the bar either consciously or sub-consciously. They've also had their fair share of quarreling in the past, particularly with the creator of the Super Mystic Sonic mod getting dogpiled by the more vocal part of the community, though they've apparently resolved these matters later without further strife. If you're planning to make content for this game or want to get involved further, I feel this is something people should know beforehand that most of these established members of the modding scene like the OP aren't going to mention themselves.

SRB2 is by far one of the best Sonic Fangames ever made, maybe THE best. having 24+ years to develop a game really makes the result heavily polished. Also, you doing a video on it will bring more attention to it, meaning more newcomers, meaning more people to play with! So thank you! I'd love to see a video on Megaman 8 Bit Deathmatch as well, its been around for half as long and is also a doom engine fangame, so making one on it after this wouldn't be too far fetched.

My only significant gripe with the game in it's current state is that the level design doesn't utilize slopes and the momentum they bring you to the same effect as the 2D classics that it's trying to emulate. However, the future looks bright. Although the next major update probably isn't going to bring any major level design changes, they will be introducing a new physics system to more closely replicate the feel of the old games. With this comes the potential for the community to start making maps more inspired by the level design of old, and perhaps eventually down the line we might get a similar overhaul to the stages we've already got. There's even some gifs that have been floating around showing off the engine's capability to do non-automated loops, the only major hurdle left to actually implement them properly is to figure out what to do about the 2D sprites.

*Heavy breath* BOY! I love this fan game it's really incredible how much people can do with a modified DooM engine, the first time i got to play it was back in 2017/18 when i first heard about it and wasn't disappointed. At first didn't understood why the special stages were different between single and multiplayer but now i find it was really clever. "But even with that i still manage to find many innovative ways to drown despite the games best efforts" that phrase is something that would end up happening to me in that death trap called Deep Sea Zone act 1. Never knew Castle Eggman was the original final zone that's actually cool and it was a good finale for the old game. Ok that BRILLIANT segway was well brilliant. The next set of zones were a good change of pace although red volcano was weird to see not having a second act but thanks for explaining the reason. Hoooo i really wanna see the next zones of this bad boy. I got to play this with my Discord group back in 2020 we played the main game alongside the mods like the Wario Ware one, some extra mode mods and some special levels that were fantastic. Robo Blast 2 Kart is a meme gold mine but phenomenal nonetheless! My friends really loved playing the game and i played it...a bit. I've seen tons of videos related to SRB2 but never got to play it myself until a few years ago. Still find it amazing that the game is *still* being worked on even after all the years. Both SRB2 and SRB2 Kart have an impressive amount of content between both the base game and the addons you can download from the official SRB2 website. Even after you think you've done everything you can do, the addons show up and say the fun is infinite. Between the mods & addons that completely change how characters behave to characters that have their own abilities and mechanics on top of levels that are either based off of older versions of SRB2 to level packs that tell a completely different story for SRB2 itself to the various maps inspired from numerous franchises and even completely original content and even bizarre character choices you wouldn't think about with their own stats for SRB2 Kart. Between SRB2 and SRB2 Kart, I'd say I have more experience with the latter. Mostly because I can't play SRB2 with a keyboard and mouse unlike SRB2 Kart which doesn't even need to use the mouse.
