I'd prefer if most of it was a drug trip, but he gets sober during the final story, thus explaining why the pathing makes no sense, but also explaining why some partially line up towards the end. The problem is when he tries telling people what happens, making up complete bullshit depending on how he feels that day, creating the split story telling... and yes, by this logic it's partially also a retelling of something that happened, but hey, it worls.
