That's one of the biggest design aspects of Sonic that made the Sonic The Hedgehog Movie version so wrong and weird. They separated his eyes into individual eyeballs.

They also lack elbows and knees and their arms just curve like old Mickey Mouse animations. Also they normally have toes (and that looks weird enough already), but occasionally - like with Amy wearing sandals one time in Sonic X - their feet are literally *the shape of their shoe.* ...At a certain point you learn to stop questioning and accept the madness. 😂
