Because that's exactly what it is, filler. Sometimes you have to take time off the main storyline to focus on other things, that's how most shows work. This episode focuses on character development of the normal cast, which is very important in the long run. Besides a little filler won't hurt anyone, the main storyline is not forgotten at all.
