1:34 Combining rap and rock/metal in a tasteful way 2:20 POD kinda had a different sound before Sonny joined, growing up in rock family then drifted his personal interest to reggae 3:34 POD was formed in 1992 4:11 Identified punk music as white music 6:16 Finding his faith and digging into it after he lost his Mom 9:39 Sonny joined the band kinda on the fly then developed it into something that helped him change something in him 11:06 Getting into music without race barriers? 13:11 Sonny loves to have black and brown people at his shows 14:46 Merging rap and rock kinda just happened because that's what they listen to 16:22 POD was indie from 92 til 99, signed in 99 to Atlantic, pushed it independently to the fullest until they decided to get a label 18:11 Earning their stripes in San Diego then opening for bigger bands little by little 19:33 "Nu Metal" term kinda just appeared coz of the way bands dressed, baggy pants, looking like rappers kinda 20:45 Being compared to Bodycount at the beginning, then Rage Against The Machine 22:08 Zach de la Rocha previous band and rap mix with metal 24:00 POD actually got signed in the early 90s 25:15 Labels on "Nu Metal" signing spree based on Korn and Limp Bizkit success? 26:00 POD was never really pushed by the label until they went platinum on their own because of their fans, then the label paid attention 29:55 Incorporating more singing, trying new things, grow musically 31:06 Being inspired by Method Man and Mary J Blige "All I Need" then Nas feat Lauryn Hill 33:24 Label kinda tried to have them work with songwriters 35:24 "Alive" was a special moment in their career 39:39 "Alive" being that one song that helped people in so many ways 42:33 Performing "Alive" never gets old and still get that feeling: "Still blows my mind" 45:48 POD was always pushing themselves, went platinum then the label started to show interest 48:46 The stigma of music stamped as "christian" 50:50 How they ended up being put in the "christian band" box 52:58 Sonny's beliefs stemming from his family dynamic 55:06 The temptations of the rock star life 57:10 The pressure of being "perfect" all the time 58:41 POD church performance for kids got interrupted because their sound was too heavy 1:02:05 Artists are not as involved in causes like they used to 1:02:53 Sonny knew about No Jumper because Danny Diablo's interview 1:04:01 When someone has a belief in a band, the whole band is identified as such even if it's only one member 1:07:04 Experimenting with new songs, not chasing hits, just making music 1:08:16 Looking at other bands to create the perfect radio single format 1:09:13 The "Boom" video 1:11:56 "Labels are designed to keep the artists in debt" 1:14:14 The group was on the up and up until a tiny disagreement amongst them, then the label just stopped pushing them 1:21:06 Going through phases as a band but they maintained their brotherhood no matter what 1:23:37 "Labels might not really push you if you don't listen to their advice" 1:24:12 POD still has the same original line up since the beginning! 1:28:37 Going on tour when you have kids 1:30:41 Dreadlocks, fans touching them without asking 1:32:43 Sonny's faith and the band's 1:35:39 POD members with side projects, other bands 1:37:35 The quality of music, no one sounded like the next band back then 1:39:39 "Jesus Christ" loll 1:40:38 Kids nowadays don't event take the time to do their musical homework or pay homage 1:43:51 What Sonny listening to these days, reggae roots type of music, Deftones, Rage

@@davemonster2 someone is in their feelings. One of those bands you mentioned has really weak vocals. I will let you figure out who I am talking about. There is most certainly posturing in rock music just like there is in hip hop. It’s just done in a different way with different motivations behind it. I think the whole Christian slant bolstered P.O.D. sales. It never appeared to me that religion was having a negative impact on sales.

Cool interview. "Alive" is a great song. It's ambiguous nature really lends itself to the listener to think about who/what makes you feel alive. For Sonny, that would be his mother. Her spirit and the support of those who care about him, gave him reason to become his best self. The song "Full Color" touches on this topic quite intensely and also fun. I think some demons were being released for sure. Music is medicine for the soul.. Anyone that's only heard the hits should check out any album by them. They are such incredibly gifted people.

Adam is slowly inching his way to a Fred Durst interview. Either way, I love the unofficial nu metal/rap rock interview series the past few months

Shout out to my California sisters and brothers. The effect this man’s music had on my city of San Diego back in the early 2000’s is legendary. POD, Mixmob, Limb Bizket, Saliva, Korn, Linken Park, 311, TOOL, Incubis, Deftones, and so many other bands are such big parts of my upbringing. God what a time to be alive. Back when skateboarding was cool and spiking your hair was the style.

It’s pretty interesting how rock is essential in the Mexican identity too but people still think we only listen to music in Spanish. It’s crazy because I grew up on POD and I never knew this guy was Mexican but all the Mexicans around me all listened to rock and it was a giant part of who we were.

Sonny is one of the few Christian artist that I actually respect. He's never said anything phobic about anyone and he sees all people as people.

Back when I was a little kid my older brother was on the phone with his school friends and they were talking about POD . My mom overheard the conversation and picked up the landline phone and said “ Who O.D.’d ? “ She thought my brother said “ He O.D.’d “ but really he said P.O.D. She really embarrassed the crap out of him that time .
