Ivar the Boneless was called Boneless probably because he was very flexible, not because he was crippled. He have been described as Berserker. Ivar was a king - in this time crippled person cant lead a viking army or become king. However nobody know the true story of Ivar or how he look.
@LunchBXcrue8 жыл бұрын
jivkotodorov84 I read that there were many interpretations of why he was called that, another possibility is he was impotent and it was a slander name given to him. He could have also been called that because of flexibility or limberness cause he was said to have been a great and strong warrior, a feat I don't see someone with extreme physical deformities accomplishing.

So a few years ago I was doing genealogy on my last name (McIvor) and it turns out McIvor means son of iomhar, and iomhar is a Gaelic derivative of ivarr! My family has been in Canada for a very long time but migrated from Northern Ireland. That's about as far back as I could get so I couldn't figure out where they came to Ireland from but ooo it would be cool to be a distant relative of Ragnar

I heard a theory that is was mistranslation of his nickname and that he was really called Ivar the Hated wich makes more sense to me than Boneless. He was one of the most ruthless Vikings in Norse history wich would be impossible in those day if was a cripple like in the show. In real life babies with condition like Ivar's were killed just like Spartans used to do with babies who were deformed or had some condition

Logistically, Hungerford, Bekshire (Hingwar's Ford) where Hingwar south of Oxford where the Biddles work where Ivar drowned during war vs Wessex could have been brought north of Oxford where Repton is... Also Ragner per the Saga of Ragnar was a tall large person, which means his son could have been taller if his wife was also tall.. Furthermore, if he had so much testosterone but could not have children he would be EXOS (cruel) and if I had more than 4 brothers they would definately make fun of a big strong man and call him funny names such as Boneless... Danish have cold humor... Ivar could definately be like his father Ragnar a big person Ivar was not crippled but a big giant person 9 feet tall... This theory makes more sense.

Well the thing about Ivar is that he is a really good leader. His people were happy, safe and prosperous under his leadership. He was also a genius military strategist and rarely if ever lost a war. People might not like Ivar and wouldn't want to personally know him but they would definitively want him as their leader. That he is a sadistic psychopath doesn't matter to his people when he is making everything better for them.

True. That is what some people can't understand, his people liked and respected him. He ruled for Vikings and protected Vikings values in a very brutal and bloody time.

The real Ivar was not crippled at all, he had an eating disorder and he was extremely fat. I know the TV series won't show this, but during a war in Sweden, his brothers threw him onto a Magical Cow that the enemy had and he crushed it with his sheer weight. The real Ivar loved all his brothers, and he never killed Sigurd. Sigurd became the King of Denmark and his wife was Bleja, daughter of King Aella (who was killed in battle with the Vikings, not blood-eagled). In his forties Sigurd was killed by the usurper Olof, the illegitimate son of Bjorn Ironside. Sigurd's son Hardeknud is an ancestor of every single king in Europe today, very inaccurate that Hirsch killed him. A Dane should have made this very good series, it would have been more accurate. Is Chumley of Pawn Stars the show runner?

Natasha Kelly we don't really know, there isn't very much in the way or recorded history of the Norsemen from what I understand, a lot of what we know comes from runes and prose Edda, and I think there's another one called sagas that is from the later period and tells about travels and migrations of some families (and I think family history maybe?) so I don't think we actually know with 100% certainty what pronunciations were correct. At least I think I could be 110% wrong lol
@TheTargaryen918 жыл бұрын
I just think Ivar sounds nicer than eevar thanks for everyone's replies
@Aethgeir8 жыл бұрын
Bring me Peter pan Actually, most of what we know of Old Norse pronunciation comes from comparisons with the Icelandic language which was isolated for so long that it remains the closest modern equivalent. The Sagas are the recorded body of Scaldic (Bardic) poetry which was the oral tradition used to record Norse legends and histories. The Prose Edda is just one of these. However, little of this was written down until the 14th century, so they aren't particularly reliable sources. Some of them do correspond with events recorded by Christian chroniclers of the viking era though, so there is at least some truth to them.

Pronunciation: E (as ea in Tea) v (as v in victory) ah (as are). This is the best English language pronunciation that still comes close to the scandinavian. The I should never be pronounced Ay, as the scandinavian I is pronounced ee or ea as in Tee or Tea. And even further research finds another one ..... Pronunciation given is the closest to the Norwegian pronunciation that you can do smoothly in the English language and with the keys you supply on the website. The Norwegian pronunciation also includes a pronounced rolling R at the end. If you were to pronounce it in American English you would include the American R. The point to make though, is that it should be Ee not Ay as the first letter, as Ay would suggest a different vowel at the beginning of the word in Norse.
@josefineseyfarth62368 жыл бұрын
NevskiLoL yep, as in German. I = ee, v= w, ar= ah. So Ivar, in both German and Old Norse would be pronounced "Eewah". Just that the Norse/ Norwegians would roll the r a lot more (like "Eewarr")
