Thanks for this vidéo Gary. As usual very clear and informative. Just a note as an A-mount shooter myself on A58, A77ii , A99ii and having tried the LAEA3 on A7R2 during 1 full week with my own lenses, I can tell that the transition a to e has for the moment too many cons for A-mounters involved on the A system. Sony must upgrade the adaptors to give at least the AF system of A77ii, at best the one found in A99ii. 3fps in AFC is a major no-go compared to 12fps AFC for example.

The autofocus accuracy and speed of the LA-EA4 can't be compared with that of the best Sony SLT cameras. However it is good enough. Nowadays a digital full frame camera is affordable. The Sony a7 camera body can be found new at around 750€. On the other hand nearly all native autofocus full frame e-mount lenses are expensive. The LA-EA4 adapter isn't expensive. It can be found new between 200-250€. I use many legacy Minolta a-mount lenses I bought from eBay which are really good. I think that it is a clever choice. I really love my Minolta AF 500mm f/8, the only mirror lens with autofocus ever. There is an exact copy of this lens by Sony too. Nearly all of the first Sony a-mount lenses were exact copies of Minolta lens. These sony lenses are more expensive but are the same as Minolta ones.
@Lofote6 жыл бұрын
It's the autofocus system of the A65 that was used here. So it is the same as the 65. Of course SLT development continued and even when A65 came out it was stripped down from the A77 system that came out the same day. Thats the problem.

Great video - although there's the version LA-EA5 now of course. I am not sure Minolta put the motor in the lens for cost reasons, at the time this was a sensible engineering move, and most other manufacturers used a similar design - only Canon put a motor in the lens, which did give them an initial advantage. Minolta had introduced α-mount lenses with motorized power zoom. Thes series of lenses were named: xi xi α-mount lenses are not compatible with Sony α-mount to e-mount adapters for Sony e-mount cameras. xi α-mount lenses don't have exactly the same electronic contacts as other α-mount lenses.
@AgnostosGnostos5 жыл бұрын
Gary Friedman I am happy that you appreciated my tip. The LA-EA4 isn't not totally incompatible. The Sony LA-EA α-mount to e-mount adapter permits autofocus and can change the aperture of Minolta autofocus α-mount xi power zoom lenses. The problem is with the zoom. The zoom with xi lenses is only motorized and it can't be used manually. The LA-EA4 according to my experience and various reviews of internet doesn't permit the motorized zoom of the Minolta xi α-mount lenses. The official manual of LA-EA4 doesn't inform at all about legacy Minolta α-mount lenses. I remember the Minolta during the film era and I couldn't understand the benefits of power zoom with film photographic cameras. I bought from eBay the minolta 28-105mm xi f3.5-4.5 at great price and was using it with my old SLT Sony camera without problem for photos and videos. It has good optical quality in the center.

Gary Friedman - The Friedman Archives - can I pick your brain? I have a Sony a7M2 (just purchased at Best Buy so I’m planning on keeping), however I’m new to photography and on a tight budget and want to learn and explore quite a bit. I’m interested in buying some very inexpensive Minolta maxxum lenses A mount on eBay to play with. Now I would of course need the LA-ea4 for that? Is that correct? But what if I wanted to buy some SSM lenses on eBay that are Sony A mount configuration, will that work on that adapter as well or do I also need to purchase the LA-ea3, which my budget doesn’t want too consider? Also the new LA-ea5 of course marries the two technologies, so should I wait a few weeks for that adapter to come out? Thats of course begs the question: Would that adapter even work for my camera? I’ve read the new adapters compatibility list’s on Sony’s website and it mentions several e-mount cameras except mine as being compatible. Does that sound right to you? Thanks very much for any info you may have for me. I truly respect your opinion and knowledge.
@FriedmanArchives4 жыл бұрын
@@erichramone7812 Yes, the LA-EA4 will work with all of those lenses, including SSM/SAM type. But you might want to wait for the new LA-EA5 to ship; if the old lenses you have will work on it it will bring more modern AF features.

Hey there, some incorrect or incomplete stuff here - it is actually more complaicated: 1) A7, A6000 and A5100 also don't provide phase-AF with LA-EA1/3, even though these cameras have on-sensor-phase-AF. Plus A7S, A7S-II, A5000, A3000 and A3500 don't even have phase-AF. So with all these the same applies as with NEX series: LA-EA1+3 will be slow! 2) LA-EA1+2 are not produced anymore. LA-EA3+4 work perfectly fine with the APS-C e-mount cameras. 3) Zeiss 135 f1.8, Zeiss 85 f1.4 and all the non-SAM/SSM Sony/Minolta A-mount lenses *can* be used with LA-EA1/3, but only in manual focus. Here's one of my questions, which adapter should I use for my Sony lenses to work on the A7 models or A9 mirrorless? And what would be your advice for buying a full sensor? The models without mirror or the A99 II (I have 7 batteries and chargers, 2 flashes HVL-F60M, a Sony's battery grip, as you know apart from the APS-C lenses everything works with the A99 II. My hesitation comes from its design date that is getting older. What do you think would be the best choice for a new Sony camera purchase. Thank you Mr. Gary, your opinion will help me.

I hate questions like these... you're essentially asking me what kind of car you should get. Just as you can't buy a bad car today, you can't buy a bad camera. Your only concern is "which camera meets my needs best?" Which of course I can't possibly answer. If your Sigma and Tamron lenses don't use the screwdriver blade, then you should go for the odd-number adapters for whatever e-mount camera you end up getting. Hope this helps (even a little).

Thank you for the help Gary. Have you done any videos on Camera Error in Sony a65 or a77ll? I have 2 broken cameras would like to fix them. The only way to clear the error message is to take out the battery.
@FriedmanArchives4 жыл бұрын
I haven't, nor do I have the factory repair manual which would document ALL of the error codes. (But really, is a video the best way to convey that information if I had it?)

Camera based autofocus motor not only means smaller and cheaper lenses, but also lenses are way more durable as there is less electronic to die. And lenses are supposed to be used for decades, while digital camera body usually is replaced within 3-5 years.

Quick question In your final detailed analysis, you left out which one to use for the a6000 and higher. Is that the LA-EA4? not sure. Sorry forgot to add that I have an a6000 body with an bunch Minolta Maxxum A-mount autofocus lenses. Additionally, I will have the mic away from the camera body (streaming youtube setup) Thanks

@@FriedmanArchives what about the new la-ea5, does it works on my lens?

The LA-EA5 adapter works great on my A7 IV, with both SSM and Screw-drive lenses. At the risk of sounding condescending, is your Focus Mode set to "MF"? :-)

Fantastic video Gary and your reply to Keaton will encourage me to save up for an LA-EA4 for my Sony A7! Two further questions please: 1 - How can I work out the effective focal length of my old Minolta/Sigma/Tokina lenses e.g. 24, 50, 28-135, 18-50, 35-80, 28-70 when mounted on LA-EA4? Also, 2 - I have an A-mount manual focus 600mm Sigma mirror lens with no electronics. I successfully used this with my Minolta 9000. Would my Sony A7ii be able to work with this lens and handle exposure correctly?

Very well explained! I know now that I have the screwdriver lenses, (Tokina, Tamron) and I bought an a7iii Sony. If I buy the LA-EA4, what can I expect when hooking it up? Will I get all the bells and whistles? Do I lose an f-stop? Will I be able to run or will I walk with a limp? All the good comments about you are well-deserved!

Hi thanks for your video. Let me explain I have a sony alpha a65 slt and a tamron 150 600mm sp di sud sony "therefore mount A". I ordered a sony a7mkiii and a sony 24mm 1.4 g master too. In short I would like to know if with this EA4 ring I can connect my tamron on the sony a7mkiii? I also have a sony mount at 16-50mm 2.8 which is nice. I think that will walk it but the tamron less on. thank you. thumbs up because the video is clean and the explanation flawless.

So if you have a Sony A58 you go for the even number ones?
@FriedmanArchives5 ай бұрын
If you have an A58 you don't need an adapter to attach an A-mount lens. These adapters are only needed for E-mount camera bodies, such as the Sony A7 series.

8:49 I ordered the LA-EA3 for mounting a Tamron A011 SP 150-600mm on a Sony a6100 E-mount. Per the table in the link from Sony, I won't be able to get AF in video mode ?? Is there a adapter that will do AF for video ? Rob www.sony.com/electronics/support/lenses-mount-adaptors/la-ea3/articles/00021281

It will focus in video depending on the camera model, but not very well. That's why it was disabled in all camera bodies starting with the A9. See my other LA-EAx video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3fZpqalo7ugo68

I just wrote to you and did not tell you that my lenses for my old Minolta 600si are zoom. Does it make a difference? only one is a 90mm Tamron SP Macro. On Amazon there is also the LA-EA5 and two kinds of LA-EA4. One says 35mm the other says FF adapter with TMT. 100.$ price difference. Can you explain, Thanks!!

@pois26636 жыл бұрын
Great explanation Friedman. I only complaint that it´s a shame Sony La-Ea adapters do not have stabilizer, because if we used it them on the sony e-mount cameras, it´s for used Konica-Minolta and Sony a-mount lenses on that e-mount bodies, and since nex cameras do not have stabilizer on theirs body, it was a must that sony La-ea adapters have it, for use lenses without stabilizer, since a-mount sony cameras has in-body. So, it´s a shame Sony do not put stabilizer on theirs La-Ea adapters. If we want to use a telezoom lenses, like Minolta 75-300 af D, you must higher the iso and shutter speed to compensated the lacks stabilizer.

I have the Sony a7iii full frame sensor Im having trouble with the focus with a fisheye rokinon 8mm 3.5 Would one of these help for video focusing? The fisheye is E Mount and manual focus but hard to focus it clearly Should I go with an A Mount cannon fisheye instead for better quality?
@FriedmanArchives3 жыл бұрын
All fisheye lenses are difficult to focus because they seem to have "infinite" depth-of-field. No, none of your suggested solutions will help. Try using the Peaking Level feature of your A7 III.

Hey Gary, good video. You explained it really well for a beginner like me. I am considering switching from my old Sony a5000 to a used 6000 in good condition, since I found a good deal at the local camera store, body and kit lens for 340€. Would it be worth getting the LA-EA2 later down the line, so I could use older Minolta lenses like the 35-105mm zoom lens? I inherited a Minolta Maxxum/Dynax 7D with a few AF lenses almost three years ago, and they are just sitting in a drawer. I know this camera is still liked by a lot of people, despite being 20 years old. But personally I don't like the bulkiness, so I am thinking about selling it.
