I have some of the latest gear for mirrorless, Sony A7R3, A7R4, Nikon Z, Fuji X-H1, etc., but I also have the Sony RX1-R that I consider to be one of the best compact cameras EVER made. I bought the Leica Q2 but returned it because it could not match the Sony RX1-R. I tried the RX1-R2 but did not think it was as good as the RX1-R because the photo sites on the sensor are much smaller. The RX1-R is the "sweet spot" for this genre of camera, I think, and the Zeiss Sonnar 35mm f2 is one of the best lenses Zeiss has ever produced. Thank you for good review!

Sony need to release the Rx1R III now.. make it has the af of A1... it will be so beast of a 35 fix focal length
@MuhammadKharismawan2 жыл бұрын
I doubt it'd have the speed of the A1, neither the A7SIII's high fps, the body is too small to accomodate that kind of stress it'd overheat so much. IF, Sony relent like how they did after A7mk1 and make the body bigger, to at least X100 size, they should be able to try something, but man... Remember also, you see that circle with a line on top of the body? that means the lens' is that far back of the camera's body and it basically took 3/4 of the body's thickness, theres a reason Full Frame compacts cant do nothing but take slow, albeit great pictures.

The best bargain is the original RX1. The RX1r is also a tip! The Zeiss Sonnar 35mm on this camera is one of the best 35mm lenses ever made. Despite the higher resolution on the Mark 2, I prefer the original RX1(r). It's better on battery, has a built in flash and a faster start up time. The 24MP sensor is also fantastic. But all RX1 cameras are absolute classics.

I've had this camera since it came out. It's my favorite digital camera. Paired with my XPan it's a perfect street photography set up. That said it does have some big drawbacks starting with the initial cost. It literally is the same price as 2016. Battery life is horrible, I regularly have 5 batteries always packed. I won't use them all in a day but it's better to have them in pocket vs at home. Lastly the pop up view finder has quit on me this past summer, just died-turned green then no image. Camera still shoots and I just use the lcd in back to frame up shots. I'm going to use it as is for a while and see if I'm bothered by not having the viewfinder. Side note I always have used the viewfinder prior. All these drawbacks have not made me ever question what camera I'm taking out. The form factor is amazing. The lens is amazing. The image quality is amazing. Yes, autofocus is not the fastest but this camera is a scalpel not a food processor. There are many other choices for getting that shot in a fast paced environment, your phone being most likely a better choice. The RX1RII is more for the quiet moments, where you can take a breath and compose your shot.

I love this video because I just bought an RX1RII a couple of weeks ago and it immediately became my favorite street camera…the FF DoF can’t be beat at that size! Plus, yes, it is slow, but I find myself focusing more on taking well composed pictures, and rock the camera with the viewfinder and eyecup attached. The best part was I bought it used for $1600 from a local camera shop who didn’t know what they had on their hands! I agree that you should only get this thing if you can get a bargain on it…ultimately, I will trade it in for the mark III immediately if that ever gets released.

The problem is exactly what you said: it's 7 years old at this point and they're still selling it new for $3500 in the US!! That's insane and IMO, just marketing strategy to increase sales during the release because if the price never goes down, the best time to get the camera is when it's first released.

This is what I was ranting for years :D this camera needs just 3 simple upgrades. - internals from 7R3, not 7R4 because it is worse in low light - battery from 7R2 at least, better the newer one from 7R3 because the lens is not so compact, if the grip is bigger it will be only better - touch screen That's it. I had one in me a couple of years ago and I felt the good stuff and I wanted one but it was more expensive than my 7r2 with 35 1.8 and the AF was worse and video was much worse, the battery was a joke... so I skipped it. But the lens with this shutter, the form factor, the sensor... it is a serious competitor in the Fuji X100, Leica Q sector if they make it right.

For me, the pros are shadow recovery, impressive sensor color science, dynamic range, silent leaf shutter, + the lens has the ability to convert to a macro. A point you mentioned that I disagree with is the battery life: while dismal, you should consider the temperature at which you ran your test. I get an average of 215 shots per battery but in colder temps, I'd obviously get less. Overall, this camera is a hidden gem but it isn't work 3.5k in 2023.

@@MuhammadKharismawan I've had the camera for 4 years and it takes fantastic images. However, if someone isn't committed to 35mm, doesn't understand the exposure triangle, won't grasp SS limitations with a high res sensor, doesn't anticipate max SS limitations with a leaf shutter at wider apertures, and won't grasp the difficulty of changing the focus point, there is absolutely no way they should buy this camera at any price. It is a very nice camera but it is very much a niche camera. If you don't know for sure that you can work with the limitations, then you absolutely should not buy it. That person should buy an interchangeable lens camera with a joystick and, preferably, ibis. I think the xe4 (though without ibis) with the 18-55 is a much better option and new is still 700 cheaper than a used rx1rii.

This camera is my all time #1 favorite camera hardware. It's the ONLY digital camera that's actually the same size as a film camera, and also full frame, and also has all the right controls. The old Sony colors suck, skin tones always look puke green or wax yellow, and if you try to change it with the white balance it turns the whole scene pink. This isn't like the X100V where you can just shoot JPEG and upload, this camera requires RAW and post processing, I found having a colorchecker profile for it makes things much easier, cuz even the default profile in Lightroom isn't that great.

I love the concept. Full frame, super compact. That’s why I want to get an A7C. An RX1R III with (obviously) Sony’s current color rendition, autofocus, menu, an easy-to-access digital zoom while keeping the megapixel count (I really don’t need more than 24 MP in the final image), IBIS and maaaaybe an f/1.8 lens (just to calm my emotions) would be super interesting to me. Videos specs? I don’t even care that much. For all I care I’d say chuck the A7C’s video capabilities in there and it’s got more than I need. Oh yeah, one more thing. Give it a decent battery. BUT it would have to be much lower priced. For a fixed lens camera, I think $1500 is the absolute max of what I would be willing to pay.

@@Stop-All-War After having used an a6000, a6300, a6400, A7iii and as of late A7C, I think they’re fine once you get used to them. Starting with the a6400, you get a "My menu" which only contains what you add to it - so all kinds of frequently used functions. Then there’s the function menu which I use all the time. Along with customizable buttons these three options make their cameras very easy to work with, but ONLY once you’ve ploughed through everything they can do and once you know how to set your camera up in a way that suits you. Also, there are no modern conveniences like dragging and dropping functions to a custom button or menu, or e.g. when you’re in the regular menu, quickly assigning something to a custom button, function menu or my menu. NOPE. You have to go to the appropriate menu section for that and find that item you wanted to add in a list all over again. So that’s pretty inconvenient. Also, their menus are pages upon pages (36 pages on my A7C for example). Good luck rembering what to find where. That’s where "my menu" comes in. I haven’t really seen the A7Siii menu yet, but people seem to think it’s a big improvement. :)

If there are no film simulations then it can't compare to the x100v. Wish more cameras would include the option. It's not all about specs, sometimes it's just the character you can get directly from the photos. This is why I've gone from Fuji, Sony, Leica, and then back to Fuji.
@fez7756 Жыл бұрын
I disagree. If it can't compare to X100V because of lack of film simulations, does that mean Fuji cameras should never be compared to Sony/Canon/Nikon/Leica? The comparison makes sense here because both the X100 and rx1rii are premium compact cameras. And while the film simulations definitely add character, so does that 35mm lens on the Sony. It has character that many modern 35mm lenses lack. I owned both the X100V and rx1rii and seeing how close they are in price currently in the used market, I would recommend the Sony if one can deal with the abysmal battery.
@SangnomShekey Жыл бұрын
@@fez7756 agreed, the rx1r ii image quality is just too fantastic to ignore at the same lrice point.
@n0w3lly90 Жыл бұрын
Why do you need film simulations? If you want film effects, use a film camera. Simulations are software driven and seldomly ever as good as the real thing. The RX1Rii blows the X100V away for dynamic range, for ISO performance, for resolution, for light gathering (because it is full frame). It is the person behind the camera that makes the pictures - the camera is a tool, and the RX1Rii is superior in every measurable way. The Zeiss Sonnar f/2.0 lens is also, and when combined with the Sony Exmor BSI sensor, and if you look at DXO Mark, one of the finest lens/ sensor combinations still. I've had mine 6 years, still love it, still my most used camera, use it for printing large format as well (my walls have plenty of framed large images), portable, stealthy for use on the streets, great for environmental portraits, general, travel, documentary and landscape shooting, even for night and indoor. What I don't like : battery life and the crazy menus on Sonys. However, the little NPBX1 batteries are easy to source, cheap, small and light to carry spares, so I can forgive that for the form factor and size and reasonably attractive design. The menu system: you get used to it, but even after 6 years you forget where settings are! I have my camera set up "just so", and keep it that way in the main to the point all I really need to use are the dials and switches on the body. The guy here on the video needs to stop obsessing over cameras being like an iPhone needing a yearly replacement!

I’ve owned a RX1 (first gen) and a RX1R2, recently sold my RX1R2 because I decided to move to a used Q2 for the better battery life and weather sealing, as (sadly) Sony doesn’t seem to be thinking about releasing a mk3 and my bank account doesn’t allow me to keep both 🫠. The Q2 is fantastic but the RX1s will always have a special place in my heart (especially the original one). In contrast to the razor-sharp images from the Q2, the RX1s produce images that have a mellow (even soft) feel but still incredibly detailed with a lot of depth, and even the JPEGs are very easy to edit. In times where even a used X100V can be sold for over $2000, I think the RX1s are of incredible value at their used prices. Fingers crossed for a mk3, though I don’t have high hopes 😇

...if it had an EVF 🙃 Also, I love 30mm on APS-C (I have an a6300 and use the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 for almost everything). So neither the GR III nor the GR III X really work for me. 😢 Otherwise, a GR III model would be right down my alley.

I really tried to get one of these used, after shooting a RX 100 for years, but I got a X100F and a used Ricoh GR instead, which are fantastic, but then eventually I got a used Leica Q. Which I prefer. I would still like to try RX1R if I could find one used. Recently, I decided to move towards carrying a lump on a walk, so I stick a either a D700 or D850 on my shoulder with a 35mm, 50mm or 85mm 1.4, and just see what I can capture. It’s fun, one camera and one lens and see what it brings.

Sony should release another gen of this somewhat niche camera and if not, Fuji should do it, will be nice to see another small bodied full frame that’s reasonably priced in the market.

I feel like an a7C plus 35mm lens is a more preferable street setup for me. The downside is it doesn’t have the 42mp sensor size but I think that’s fine for most street photography prints. It is damn gorgeous though

A7C with the 40mm 2.5 - awesome lens. It’s on my A7iv most of the time. Would love to testdrive that A7C with it
@sneakingelephant2 жыл бұрын
@@MichielHeijmans that 40mm is a great pancake size. Hefty price but I feel like it’s a nice all around lens for a small minimal setup. I personally use the 35mm 2.8 Zeiss. The only downside for me with it is the lens doesn’t feel great to manual focus with compared to an actual manual lens.

I still have the original mk1 (not the R version) Love the lens & pockatability & was nowhere near the price to the Rii. Manual aperture ring & pretty direct controls/custom buttons are really good too. The original lacks a viewfinder, so the screen’s a bit of a limitation in some conditions (and it doesn’t swivel). Mine has also lost the manual focus control (common fault on the Al, not sure about the Rii) and service cost is very high to fix that. The other point - partly due to lack of viewfinder & the size for handling, I do miss it not having any stabilisation - if they do a v3, I’m not sure I’ll be able to justify the price, but hopefully they can squeeze in sensor stabilisation or something

I had the OG version as well. I’d say an A7c with the 40mm G comes pretty close and has even better ergonomics.

I do love this camera, I owned one for a while a few years ago. It doesn’t beat the X100V though. The X100 series period is just more fun to shoot with in my opinion. Great video 🤙🏼

Now these are backordered 🤣, I have the X100f and don't feel the need to replace it, shoot I might sell it just to cover other costs. If Sony made a III with the a7iv AF, in body aps-c "zoom" option, better ISO, etc to bring it up to 2022 level.

I just use my Sony A7RIV or A7RIVA with the Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical which are not that much larger than either Sony RX1R II or Leica Q2. The sensor in the Sony RX1R II are great, I had the Sony A7RIII which have the same sensor.
@js312raf Жыл бұрын
Not that much larger? You cannot be serious. With the Voigtlander it's more than double the weight. Also 129x97x81 vs 113x65x72 is a large difference, and that's without the lens on the A7.
@cameraprepper7938 Жыл бұрын
@@js312raf You cannot have a Leica Q or RX1 in your pocket, so you need a bag, when you need a bag you can go all the way and get a decent system Camera so you can change Lenses, no I do NOT think there is a large difference, NOT compared to a REAL pocket Camera !!! Get serious.

I rented an RX1R II from Lensrentals as a point and shoot type compact camera for the holidays. Perhaps I got a bad copy from Lensrentals but overall I was unimpressed with the RX. Specifically, I thought the image quality (sharpness) was going to be much better than it was. I ended up just using my A1 with FE 1.4/35mm GM for the family shots and the difference in image quality was like night and day, imo. Otherwise, I liked the form factor, pop-up EVF and the basic concept of a light, travel camera. I agree with others' hope that Sony will release an RX1R III. One pang of anxiety I felt that I didn't anticipate was that this, being a fixed lens camera, one must be mindful to protect the lens from any scratches (I don't use UV filters). Just my two cents.

It's of course more expensive but I think an a7CR with the 24 or 40 G is basically the replacement for this.

The reason this camera STILL costs $3K is because there is nothing like it. There’s nothing close to that size with that big of a sensor and that hood of glass. It’s a 1 of 1 unfortunately. The fact that it still sells brand new for $3K is incentive to not make a new one.
