#TheSopranos #Sopranos #TheSopranos25thAnniversary
January 10th, 1999 marks the 25th anniversary of the legendary series The Sopranos. The series that is widely regarded as the single greatest television series ever produced and written. As it introduced to us televisions first ever anti-hero in Tony Soprano. Even still with almost two decades since the show hit the air in 1999, the series has become more popular than ever. As it has since gotten a revival by appealing to a younger demographic. At the time of its release, The Sopranos focussed on heavy topics that weren't traditionally seen on television or topics that resonated with audiences. It displayed themes of depression, anxiety, mental health, suicide, murder, and the American dream. But since the series' initial marking being January 10th, I thought I'd take a look back at what single episode really got the ball running for we all know to be the single greatest television series of all-time.

My late grandfather would watch the Sopranos all the time. The good side of Tony, the family loving side, really reminded me of my grandfather. Im 25 and just finished the series in about 3 months, finished it a week ago actually. Never seen a better show, Breaking Bad and the rest just dont compare.

I heard Phil almost spent this long in the can. I think it changed television because even the good guys were bad, and the bad guys good. It showed the reality of how complex people are.

Anticipating the coming weekly episode, staying glued to the TV (bathroom, snacks, drinks all taken care of before the opening TV static before the theme song comes on), and discussing it the next morning at work/school and seeing those who missed it flee the room to not get anything spoiled was an incredible part of my 20's. And the year plus-long breaks for whatever reason..... I think the longest was a 3 year hiatus in between seasons. It drove some people nearly nuts. It was a great time to be alive.

The Sopranos, in my opinion, is the greatest television drama series of all time. It’s #1 in my book, because it broke all the rules of television AND wrote new ones. And it didn’t apologize for doing so. But most importantly of all, Tony Soprano was quite possibly the greatest antihero in TV history. James Gandolfini was brilliant as Tony Soprano. Yes, Tony was a cold-hearted villain. But James made Tony not only vulnerable and human, but completely relatable. I am proud to be a fan of The Sopranos. Forever and always.

@@raymondsims7042, you can certainly make a strong case for The Wire being the greatest TV show ever. I watched every episode of The Wire from start to finish, and it is, indeed a true masterpiece. But The Wire and The Sopranos both have something in common: They could both be considered “The Great American Novel Written for Television.”

I think another reason that the show is still so relevant is that the journey that Tony went on, with therapy, is the same as America has been on with therapy over the last 25 years. It can be beneficial in the start, and help certain people be able to articulate their feelings. But ultimately, it only teaches you how to frame every one of your flaws and misdeeds as being someone else's fault.

I always felt the show was shining a light on the quackery of the mental health field. Most of these "mental illnesses" depicted in the show were simply a guilty conscience, they were all looking to rationalize, justify, or exploit. Carmelas one time psychiatrist laid it all out. He was the only real counselor on the show. He didn't give any meds, he didn't even charge her if i remember. Just gave her some cold hard truths.

The world's foremost authority, on suicide. OK, maybe going a bit far. But the series featured mental disorders from day one, depression, angst, and suicides(6) throughout the show, we can safely say the show's alternate theme is mental health. Moreover, the mental health of the mafiosi. Everyone in Tony's family went through some therapy. Tony sr. and Tony jr. mostly.

The sopranos got turned down by all the major networks for obvious reasons. The writers/creator's of the show didnt want to at first go to hbo. Most writers and creator's of series dreamed of having their show on a major. But the sopranos on hbo was a perfect match. Hbo allowed the sopranos to truly be expressed they way it ought to be. Plus hbo was on the come up in the late 90s but the sopranos took it to a whole different level.

It didn't just show that the hero and villain could be the same person, it showed that there didn't need to be a hero at all to tell a compelling story with a ton of meaning and brilliant writing, acting, directing, and editing. That was the polar opposite of what the norm had been since television started. Oz may have technically beat it to the punch, but unfortunately it goes over a lotta heads and is difficult for some people to get into due to how off beat, surrealist, and absurdist it is as well as the topics it covers, questions it asks, and demographic its centered around. The Sopranos was accessible, relatable, and extremely entertaining but due to the demographic it was familiar yet still just foreign enough for most people to allow em to get into it but have just enough distance to not be thrown off by the subject matter. Nothing like it before or since. Don't know that there ever even can be. It's like Michael Jordan's era, it was a moment in time that's not likely to be duplicated again.
