While David Chase's hit television series The Sopranos mostly focusses on themes of the Italian mafia, Italian culture, sex, religion, and masculinity. However, a majority of the show centres around themes of depression, suicide, mental illness, and death. But why?

Thought it'd be interesting if his friends died, broke his school's trophy case and messed them up, makes excuses for the smallest things no matter how serious the situation (getting Tony clean clothes), tried to kill his uncle and assaulted other people trying to escape, held a guy down while his friends poured acid on his leg, general hypocrisy like driving a nice car and (going back to his nature of using excuses) saying it was fuel efficient (it wasn't). Those are situations that aren't relatable and hardly excusable for regular people, AJ knew about the mob but was disconnected from it. Despite all his pretentiousness and pondering, he chose to do the easy thing instead of the productive thing. It's not that hard to get.

No cap, The Sopranos is the one show that actually made you glamorize the life “AT FIRST” but then you see the destruction, death, pain, and mental crisis throughout the series, One minute your cheering on for Tony or Chrissy but then they get haunted by they past crimes and their guilty misdeeds. It’s truly haunting to have such guilt over you and then numb it by living the high life.

depression is part of life. another part of life is that no matter how fucked up, you HAVE TO accept things the way they are and move forward from there. fail to do so, and you ll lose yourself forever. take my advice, accept it for what it is and move forward. become a better version of yourself everyday. THAT is the cure.

Food also plays a huge role as a coping mechanism for the characters. Obviously food is a part of Italian culture but we constantly see Tony eating as a form of comfort while he and other characters Vito, Bobby etc are mocked for their weight. The scene where Tony & Aj are bonding by making sundaes is just passing the baton of unhealthy cooping mechanisms.

The mental health issues in the Sopranos series were well done. In that life, it is basically a whose who of mental health issues ranging from anti-social behavior and depression, to straight up violent psychopathic behaviors. Using this issues in the series lent a greater sense of reality to the project. However, from everything I know personally about the Cosa Nostra, going to a shrink was an easy way to get yourself killed. In the Chicago version of the mob "The Outfit" that shit would be a death sentence.

Its no real surprise that depression would be a big part of the world of the mafia life considering that they live in a world where there is no true friendship loyalty or safety and everyone around you could kill you at any time for any reason. Al Capone was famous for being extremely moody emotionally unpredictable and prone to bouts of intense mania followed by fits of extreme sadness.

Furio's depressed after realizing New Jersey is not an upgrade from Italy and that he can never be with Carmela. Carmela's depression with Tony's infidelities, her own issue of enabling Tony's lifestyle while completely benefitting from it, and that there is no easy way to get out of her relationship with Tony - to be independent, to be with Furio, or any other man for that matter. Plus her kids treat her like shit. Adriana's storyline is important, too, her being in love with Christopher, who is abusive to her, while also being stuck as an informant. Big Pussy being an informant and ratting out his close friends, knowing there is no good outcome to his situation. Everyone has some sort of mental and emotional struggle in this show, it's fascinating. But it's very true and realistic.

Great channel and videos! Never really gave these kind of insights a thought cuz you have to watch Sopranos twice to catch details you miss the first time around and ya don’t wanna miss when anyone gets violently whacked!

well, I think the key word about the show is disappointment. It is no surprise that they get depressed when they get disappointed in their marriages, expectations about life and themselves. I very vividly remember Tony's shock when he realizes that Meadow's not a child anymore and can cunningly handle social situations.

I love your coverage on the character of Dave Scatino, he’s one of my favorite characters.. You know Robert Patrick has range bc he can play a killing machine and also be a loser who gets walked over and hustled

I was surprised to find out David Chase was surprised people thought he got darker by the end. Watched the last talking Sopranos with David Chase today. I can't get enough of the Sopranos. Often looping the seasons through the night and day. All the seasons are great and I can't seem to find a favorite season.

Even Carmela had a short phase where she would lie in bed and not bother with chores. I don’t think you could find a character who doesn’t struggle.

Actors have spoken about being so immersed in their character that it starts to trickle down into their personal life so it's interesting/sad to read that the actor for AJ Soprano went on to struggle with substance abuse after The Sopranos ended. He seems to have overcome it in recent times though which is great to see!
