I was working at a suburban Philly newspaper when this episode aired, and it turned out the Members Only guy actually worked at a pizza place in Penndel, Pa. He wasn’t an actor, but he caught some casting agent’s eye and entered tv history. We interviewed him a few times, and he had no idea if he was the shooter or not. Pretty random. Great video series by the way.

Maybe I'm overthinking this but Tony has pretty much alienated both AJ and Carm throughout the series which is why they sit across from him at the table. Meadow, who Tony still has a strong relationship with, would have been the person to sit next to Tony at his 3 o'clock, in the way of the shooter. Instead, the shooter has a clean shot at Tony.

This is the best interpretation I've read. I still think theres an even chance that he's killed or its the FBI showing up with a RICO conspiracy/murde charge. No chance of bail. Either way Tony's life as we knew it is over. His guardian angel wasn't there in that exact moment.
@tjanderson5892
@tjanderson5892 2 жыл бұрын
Not a bad observation, but I don’t think that was considered when filming the scene. Think it was more about what works best on camera since they ending is supposed to be from Tonys perspective. Having the subject, Tony, facing Carm and AJ is a traditional framing technique. That way your subject doesn’t have to adjust where he’s looking between Carmen and AJ while giving his dialogue. He can look forward and talk to em both. So that when he turns his head ya can switch to a different shot and know that he’s not looking to talk to someone sitting next to him. Also makes it’s more significant when he does turn and look somewhere else. A lot of rambling to explain a short scene, but the scene has been discussed for many hours w/ many of joints in ppls hands l

Throughout the whole series AJ was a major worry for Tony, he represents Tony's failure, it just so happens that AJ walks into the restaurant with the supposed hit man that may or may not have killed Tony, as if David chase was symbolising Tony's worry about death and his failures walking through the door simultaneously.

Also notice AJ bought Rhiannon to both the hideaway AND family's house during a war. Carmella herself was even a little bothered by it when she told they were going to Holstens. Paulie loved Tony, so when he walked out the look on his face and his body language tells me he knows what's going to happen. He doesn't want Tony to die but he knows he's going to be whacked. I think Patsy and the others made a deal with new York that if they would let them get Phil in return the would give up Tony to end the war.

Paulie loved himself, I 100% believe that he had something to do with Tony's death. Why else would they foreshadow his death by Tony's hands in Paulie's dream? He has always done whatever it takes to survive and he would definitely sell Tony out to New York to avoid being clipped himself.

Someone did a video on it and i really think Paulie and Patsy did it. Patsy for obvious reasons but Paulies reason is more subtle but in short, he had made so many underhanded plays against the family, that his conscious was starting to warn him. The scene where he dreams of Big Puss and then he wakes up and we see him in serious thought as hes lifting weights tells us that hes about to do something about his fear of being killed by tony

Such insane and beautiful amounts of detail throughout the whole show, the way AJ remembers what Tony said back in season 1 and Tony doesn't. I thought Tony not remembering it was a sign that it's just some stupid shit AJ is always saying like usual, but then I rewatched the show and saw that Tony really did say that, I forgot just like Tony. That moment made me a lot more sympathetic for AJ. Just when he thinks he's got stuff figured out, his depressed ass dad ruins shit for him. And it makes him look bad to everybody. Damn.

That last scene with Tony and Paulie is one curiously filmed scene. Prior to this, every other scene set outside of the shop was done in a Barry Sonnenfeld wide angle shot, where you can see the whole crew. But now, it’s just these two. The camera is clearly far away from them, and the close ups are clearly zoom-ins. It gives a real sense of finality to one of the most prominently featured sets on the show.

I've talked about Junior's dementia on these videos before, but since this is the end, I might as well bring it up here, especially given its relevance. The final scene between Tony and Junior is not only one of my favorite scenes in this episode or this season, it's one of my favorite scenes in the entire series. This has been built up to for such an incredibly long time, and there's so much emotion between them. Both actors bring their A game here, and the conclusion of Junior's dementia arc is both touching and absolutely heartbreaking. Seeing the decline into utter confusion of someone who used to be so sharp is difficult to watch, regardless of what kind of person they were before, but even moreso if it's someone you like/respect. The entire thing was handled very respectfully and written (and, of course, acted) very believably. It's sad to see Junior's story end like this, but the journey was nonetheless stellar the whole way, and the ending is phenomenal.

David Chase created the perfect television series and the perfect ending. He left the ending up to the viewer to decide if Tony lived or died and left himself the option of a prequel or a sequel at a future date. He chose the prequel-at least in my mind- as a sort of memoriam to Tony Soprano. If it wasn't perfect we wouldn't still be talking about it 20 years later.

Interesting review of the ending. Sopranos was a brilliant showcase of the human experience, which exists in the “grey” of life. Chase explored the complexities of the human psyche through the vehicle of a mob boss - not an easy task - and he achieved something that I have never seen on tv before nor since. I miss the show and saddened that Gandolfini is gone. Thank goodness we can step into the soprano world when we need to visit our favourite Family.

Congratulations on finishing this beast of a series and I'm looking forward to seeing your analysis of both Breaking Bad and The Wire, which probably occupy my top-5 alongside The Sopranos. My opinion of the ending is a bit different, probably because I'm not that into symbolism. I believe that it doesn't matter wether Tony lives or dies and that the point of the ending was to highlight Tony's paranoia and uncertainty. When we discuss the ending and many signs that might have pointed to Tony's demise like the jacket or some guy going to the bathroom, we kinda get into Tony's shoes. In real life, if we saw someone with a jacket of a person we wronged, or a picture of a house from our nightmare, we wouldn't pay attention to it. But since it's Tony, who left so many lives broken in his wake, he has to constantly think about this, just as us he probably contemplates wether it's Butchie, Paulie, Little Carmine or any of others who want to see him dead. It doesn't matter wether he lives or dies, he's already dead inside and forever he is cursed to look for bad omens and expect betrayal. Also, i think "If you're lucky you'll remember the good times" also applies to AJ, it's no coincidence that he has remembered this phrase. Out of his whole family he's the only one who remained uncorrupted. While Meadow embraced her family's lies, AJ doesn't tell his friends that Richie Jr was killed by black drug dealers or that Cosa Nostra doesn't exist. He's the only child his parents managed to shield from evils of their lifestyle, but at the cost of him being a broken man that depends on their support for his survival.

I can’t stand the 3 o’ clock in Holstens theory, Tony is sitting at 12 and where Meadow would be, where Member’s Only supposedly shoots him from, is his 9 o’ clock.

Rhiannon holds a little more significance in the final episodes of the series. She was a plant from Buchie and this is how they found out Tony would be at Halstons for dinner that fateful night. Her picture is scene on the wall of Butchie’s salon during the meeting of Phil’s crew to discuss how to take down Tony’s crew. Why else would a new character be introduced during the final episodes? Also she is totally out of place in AJ’s rehab center. Look at the conditions of the other girls, they this semi supermodel walks in looking perfect. This guy dives into the final episode and explores this theory: kzbin.info/www/bejne/anmxammmr9RljpY

Pauile also brought barber's scissors, and the NY family had a barber shop. Paulie and Patsy were also discussing having something done, and Patsy obviously hated Tony. He might have backed out if Tony gave him the capo position, and that's why Paulie got worried when Tony brought that up. This is all written in some website in full obviously

I had a thought recently as to the meaning of the series finale title. Earlier in the final season, we find out Tony committed his first murder over Labor Day weekend in 1982. It stands to reason that Tony got made a few weeks or months later. It could have been December '82. The finale takes place in December 2007. Perhaps that famous final scene in Holsten's takes place on the 25th anniversary that Tony got made...in America.
