If you were a first generation child of immigrants, you can so relate to why all the grown ups are crying and why the young ones and Adriana don't have a clue. Our parents would love sharing their songs from the old country with us as they remembered home. And we cry because we remember them.
@vaahtobileet6 жыл бұрын
Yes and they didn't even speak Italian. The uploader of this video amusingly cut out most of the Meadow parts and the very ending of the season, where Junior's song transitions into French, Chinese and Spanish songs. He didn't get it, so he just left it out. These people watch The Sopranos without any idea of what the show is about. Oliver Stone said that "Generally, popular films are a result of a misunderstanding between the public and the director" and you can observe this in full effect with The Sopranos.

That’s part the message yes. But the other part is that there is also a divide between the older generation being nostalgic and complacent about what in reality is a super fucked up thing. Organized crime that involves the taking of human lives along with other very heinous crimes. Earlier in the episode the therapist really tries to press Tony into trying to resize this. And all he says is “I didn’t have a choice but I want to give my children a choice” the hypocrisy in that statement is that sure, he’s providing for his kids and wanting to me better than him and not follow his path. But he is doing all the things he doesn’t want his children doing. And they grew up seeing this left and right, since episode one. medow growing wise to what her father did. And AJ literally following in tony’s footsteps with his anxiety in the same exact way. Developing a panic attack because he is literally scared of his own father, just like how Tony had his first panic attack trigger. So then the younger generation as represented by medow and AJ in this scene are like “wtf...? We’re crying singing and being all nostalgic for our families organized crime affiliations that we are pretty sure lead to the killing of one of our own...? Fuck this...”

Fascinating Junior is the son of actual Italians, those songs are the memory of the old country that he got from his parents. With each passing generation this memory goes away: people like Jonny, Tony, Bobby can still feel it, because they learned it from their parents, it is also their heritage. But kids like Meadow and Adriana, they lost all connection to the past, they don't understand what the song means and carries

Woke up to The Sopranos after 39 years of being alive. Was about to give up in season 3. Then, this moment came up. I am not italian, I don’t understand a thing. This moment though, it felt surreal and I cried along with the characters on the screen. Just wanted to bookmark this moment here. I wanted to give up The Sopranos because it is too dark and I felt it was seeping into my veins. I was giving up The Sopranos. I won’t now. What. A. Moment. Johnny Sack shot, made me lose it. The Sopranos. Before. Everything. Love from India

Instead she is the one who knows everything. She doesn't bear the hypocrisy: she know that Jackie was killed by someone that was in the same room, person who criyng for one song but doesn't make problem to kill a young kid. David Chase outlines perfectly the hypocrisy in this scene.
@Howard.Stern.5 жыл бұрын
Meadow is the hypocrite. She covered for Jackie dealing drugs and skipping classes and wrote a paper for him. Tony told Jackie not to join the mafia. Jackie murdered Sunshine whilst high on drugs. And shot at others trying to kill them. He had to die at that point. Meadow loves when her father pays for her tuition and clothing with mafia money.

@@Howard.Stern. "Tony told Jackie not to join the mafia" ok and thats Meadows fault how? she knew nothing about that. in her eyes Jackie was just another kid fucking around. at what point did Tony tell Meadow to make sure Jackie doesnt join her fathers (there is no mafia) mafia or tell him hes up to shit?

@@miggy78 it was so cool. He spoke about his life experiences and it really made me realise how long he’s been around. He told stories about singing for ww2 soldiers who had just gotten back from the war. He also spoke about how he got started into showbiz and how he got the job on the Godfather part 2. Then he sang the song from The Godfather which I thought was so cool. He sang a lot of songs throughout and his voice is incredible. At the end he met everyone who wanted to meet him and took pics and singled things.

Caterina, Caterina, why do you say those bitter words? Why do you speak and torment my heart, Caterina? Don't forget, I gave you my heart, Caterina, don't forget. Caterina, Caterina, why do you come and say those words that hurt me so much? You don't think of my pain, you don't think, you don't care. Ungrateful heart, you have stolen my life. Everything is finished and you don't care any more! Catarí', Catarí' you do not know that even in church I bring my prayers to God, Catari. And I recount my confession to the priest: "I am suffering from such a great love." I'm suffering, I'm suffering from not knowing your love, I'm suffering a sorrow that tortures my soul. Reminds me of Irish funerals. Pure traditional music, never seen any of the older men in my family cry but it’s the only time I feel comfortable crying when the folk songs come out at the funerals. Just knowing it’s the same songs that will get sung when my own parents die hits different. 🇮🇪❤️🇮🇹

I dont know how David Chase could create a scene this brilliant. How...I’m a “writer” myself and this is...just leaps and bounds ahead of anything I could come up with. The hypocrisy of the family in crying while remembering the very heritage that they betrayed. Meadow is the only one who sees through this scene of self pity.

@@VCthaGOATdunker Not here. Her family is made of hypocrites. Carmella cant stand the life but she continues to buy the things she wants with Tony's money. Tony and his crew ordered the death of Jackie junior and all the while at his funeral, wake, and after lunch in everyone mopes and embraces their culture but Meadow sees the bullshit. As they all sit there and enjoy the music Meadow understands that everything going on around her is a product of self denial and acceptance of their culture to the point of ignorance.
